DirecTV To Offer NFL Sunday Ticket Via Broadband
$350 for those without the satellite TV service
by Karl Bode Monday 23-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives
When DirecTV extended their exclusive (and expensive, at more than $700 million a year) distribution deal with the NFL they included the right to deliver NFL games via broadband. Last fall DirecTV started testing their broadband video Sunday Ticket service last fall, and according to the New York Daily News, will be offering it to everyone this fall. Subscribers don't need to be a DirecTV subscriber to get the service, which will cost $350 for a season and will be offered in 720p -- assuming your broadband connection can handle it.

I should have been more specific. I meant the pricing structure for online. It better be reliable and smooth if people will be watching online.

Since it will be using Flash it will not be smooth unless you have a quad core CPU and a GPU that can utilize hardware acceleration.

You mean like how my single core intel atom with gma 950 eee box can handle up to 480p flash and my single core atom with nvidia ion acer revo can handle 1080p flash?

Indeed. I called up to cancel this year and was offered a price cut of 35$ a month. So I am getting Sunday Ticket half off.

I looked at this broadband thing and for people who have sunday ticket its like 10 or 15$ extra a month instead of it being a stand alone service like NBA or MLB.

Never. Its easier to sell/license/rent your property, than to market it directly to consumers and take the risk of supply and demand. If you lease it for a lump sum, its guaranteed money. Selling views to consumers, no guarantee you will make a penny.

MLB and NBA rating's combined don't rival the NFL.They have a product that networks are willing to pay billions for in which in turn means advertisers are willing to pay more.MLB and NBA get half way decent ratings for their playoffs and championship. The NFL primetime games are always the highest rated shows of the week, not just that night. And the superbowl is the highest rated every year. Those other 3 leagues have to offer their product at a very low price just to entice potential viewers!

didn't they try that a few years ago? MLB extra innings was going to be on DIRECTV only but there was a big outcry and that changed

Bars have to pay thousands of dollars for Sunday Ticket depending on seating capacity and cannot substitute broadband for it. A typical bar with a seating capacity of 350-500 people will pay over $4000 for Sunday Ticket.

I used to subscribe to Sunday Ticket. It was $120 a year. Every year the price went up a few dollars. Then when they added HD it was a pricey $100 extra. I bailed, it got to be too much, especially with four games on regular tv and another two on non broadcast channels every week.

I absolutely love the Red Zone channel. Dish and cable operators sell that for seven dollars a month. If I could get that I'd be happy. As a DirecTV subscriber, though, they will not sell me Red Zone without my purchasing the entire HD Sunday Ticket package. I called and complained about that setup last year and they responded by spamming my email with Sunday Ticket advertisements.

I used to like DirecTV. They've changed quite a bit over the years with all the management turnover. I see AT&T laying Uverse cable just down the street. I'll switch in a heartbeat when that goes live.

I can get Red Zone for $7 a month with the competition, DirecTV wants me to pay $350. Way to drive away a long time customer, dummies.

Football dude, if you call into DirecTV and say "cancel" that will route you to the Rentention dept. They have the ability to add RZC to your account for free. Just tell them you're looking at switching to dish over the RZC. It's taken around 5-10 mins for more "good" customers to have it added.

I tried that last year, all it did was generate spam to my email about how great Sunday Ticket is. Maybe I'll have my wife try it this year. She's better at manipulating people than me.

Oooops too good to be true

It's an extension of a program that began in New York City last year and is rolling out nationwide this season. But it's aimed at fans who aren't able to access DirecTV service, which requires a satellite with a clear south-facing view. Customers will need to verify that they aren't able to access DirecTV.

Listen DirecTv I do NOT want your TV service expcept for Sunday Ticket. Now do you want my money or not? Appearantly not.

Here's some math DirecTv

Some money > NO money.

Do you have a DirectTV dish and receiver? No? Congratulations! I guess you can't access DirecTV's signal then. Of if your ethics are flexible: Your property doesn't face a Southerly direction. Or you have a historical properly that doesn't permit dishes installed. Or an anal retentive landlord|HOA|condo association that doesn't permit dishes.

Unless there is a guideline that I can't find that stipulates what exactly "can't access" means, there likely will be little verification done other then a simple verbal question that is easy to say yes or no to. In the past, many people have "moved", otherwise known as lied about, their location for purposes of gaining a particular market's broadcast instead of their actual local station. Little verification was done with that other then ensure that the address existed and wasn't already a subscriber.

Edited to add: Here is the signup page. The page nor the FAQs make any reference to a requirement of legitimately not being able to obtain a signal.

now when you say "an extension of a program that began in new york city", does that mean if you live in nyc you can get this? what the hell is a "clear south facing view"? I'm guessing they mean if there's a skyscraper in the way, or a tall building facing south, you qualify?

I have DirecTV and only subscribe to Sunday Ticket. No basic service. Nothing else, although I get shopping channels and Cspan and can order PPV if I want. I also get the NFL channel. That's part of the deal the NFL cut with DirecTV years ago. Sunday Ticket is also considered basic service, so I can add NHL, NBA, and MLB service and get the free previews.

I'll take 720p over 1080i for any football game as it's better suited for fast moving screens (2x the refresh rate). And since no one is broadcasting in 1080p you're left with 720p.

And they are charging the same price for the games as non-NFL:ST subscribers. Yeah it sucks. Welcome to a monopoly. Your alternative is a crappy stuttering feed on justin.tv if you are lucky if you want an out of market game.

They need to take a page from MLB

This is a good move but I personally feel the price is a little steep. Now if they would take a page from Major League Baseball and offer the broadband half of what extra innings costs on TV ($100-120(nicer version with more features) vs. $175-200), then I might be more interested.

Some people that have directv have gotten it for 180

Some people that have directv have gotten the ticket (not streaming version) for 180 dollars. The renewal price was 300 dollars in 6 50 dollar payments. Several people including myself have gotten 120 dollars off the package. So i basically got the ticket this year for 180 along with many others.

The 350 does sound a little steep for online streaming but if that's the only way some people can watch their favorite team some will be willing to pay it.

They charge $350 because they can get $350

If you can't spend it and want to watch your out of area market, then you will find a friend or go to your local watering hole that has the game. I'm not paying it either... but someone obviously is.

Subject needs to be changed

It should read "DirecTV To Offer NFL Sunday Ticket Via Streaming Video". I seriously doubt that DirecTV is using broadband services to serve up their video streams. The term "broadband" is so misused anymore that the public is often confused and misled.

Diectv Sunday Ticket requirements

I just called about getting NFL Sunday ticket by the internet. What the guy told me it available to any one. He did state that it was on a 15 min delay and had to have special software to view the games. It was available on Sunday from 12 to 8:15 est.

Sunday Ticket Only

In years past, DirecTV used to let you subscribe to only Sunday Ticket with no other channels... do they still allow new customers to do that or do they force a base package on to you now?

Are We Missing Something Good Here?

There are a ton of people that subscribe to DTV just for this package, now this package is available without a dish and without the other programming.

This is a GOOD THING. If further pushes along the need for cable to sat to be able to watch sports and allows people to cut the cord on these services and still see the content they want without being forced to pirate it.

I would never pay that much, but there are many that will.

Is this post implying if you already pay the 350.00 to get it on your TV, you will now be able to stream it for free? That would also be great for people that can not be home or are traveling over the holidays....
tranceFusion

ehh

as far as I know, they require a basic package.

With comcast bundling services together, it is cheaper to get everything through them. I was basically happy with the service portion of it, but I am out of my team's local area. I considered the costs of going to a bar every week, and directv with sunday ticket came out to be cheaper... yet still more than comcast.

I would have rather paid 350 to get this online, but unfortunately I already got directv installed last week.

Yes, I think 350 is expensive, but with the season looming and faced with the prospect of not seeing your team's games, you start to get a little antsy.
