Dish Unveils New $30 'Flex Pack' Skinny Bundle

On the heels of a relatively awful quarter for subscriber additions, Dish Network has unveiled a new skinny bundle it hopes will appeal to "cord trimmers" -- or those looking to scale down to a more flexible and economical cable bundle. According to a company announcement, Dish's new "Flex Pack" skinny bundle costs $40 a month, and includes a core package of programming consisting of more than 50 channels and the choice of one of eight themed channel packs.

As with other skinny bundles, each additional channel pack costs an additional monthly fee, in this instance between $6 and $10 per month, each. Dish notes that customers who choose not to add any channel packs can receive the Flex Pack core programming for $30 per month. Premium channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and Starz are also available as add-ons for an additional fee.

"Our customers are frustrated with having to pay for hundreds of channels, most of which they never watch," Dish said of the offer. "Flex Pack provides a level of flexibility and control that brings our customers closer to the ideal of fully tailoring their channel lineup."

Dish's subscriber totals have taken a beating as the company has taken tougher-than-industry standard positions on demands for higher programming rates from broadcasters. This has quite often resulted in users losing access to channels they pay for. Thanks to an ongoing dispute between Dish and Tribune Broadcasting, for example, Dish customers have been unable to access 42 local Tribune channels in 33 markets across 34 states and the District of Columbia since mid June.

More details on Dish's new skinny bundle, as well as a full breakdown of available channels, can be found over at the Dish website.

there is a fundamental problem with the offer

The problem with cord cutting isn't just about hundreds of channels that we don't watch... And simply offering a skinny bundle of 50 channels, isn't going to suddenly entice me to signing up with Dish.

1. I don't watch linear TV anymore, except for the rare occasion I.E. NFL.
2. There doesn't appear to be on-demand access or a catalog of on-demand media.

Millennials (as well as others) want to watch their favorite programs at the time and place of their choosing. Offering a skinny bundles with old linear styled broadcast's doesn't address the fundamental change in media consumption in the US -- ON-Demand and with minimal commercial interruption is the wave of the future.

looks like...

...a bunch of crap to me. Way to many religious and shopping channels, and a bunch of other BS stations.

It's got TCM though, hubby likes that one...

This seems very much like Sling TV

This seems very similar to Sling TV, only I'm required to sign a contract, pay monthly lease fees for the equipment, pay $20 more per month on the base package, etc.

Yes, I understand Sling TV doesn't have DVR but for someone looking to 'stay connected' with a basic set of channels Sling TV is the far better option (in my opinion).

How about ..
