Distributed Computing News

If you haven't checked out BBR Distributed Computing clubs lately, now may be the perfect time. Our groups, many of which are highly ranked, believe strongly in the individual projects they contribute to. Whether you’re searching for extraterrestrial life, cures for diseases, conservation of our natural resources, or trying to decipher codes - it’s rewarding to be part of a group effort.

Team Discovery has two current projects: United Devices and Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. UD, administered by Grid.org, is dedicated to finding cures for cancer and smallpox. TSC, coordinated by The Rothberg Institute for Childhood Diseases, strives to cure Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.

Our Project Hope has 17 blades (A blade is a series of specialized computer components set up just to process DC projects) currently crunching; 9 running UD and 8 are TSC. The UD blades are currently ranked 46 out of 1296 members. Our TSC blades are ranked 8 out of 257 members. The 9th TSC blade will be added soon. The group is ranked 6th in UD production and 2nd in TSC production, and is always eagerly accepting new members.

Team Ecology is contributing their spare computing cycles toward preserving and protecting the earth's wilderness and rainforests. Thousands of acres of natural habitat are being destroyed daily, and the group believes their daily clicks will preserve some of this precious habitat for future generations.

One member of Team Ecology (Starfish) recently announced the deployment of stats pages for the Ecology Fund Eco clickers. Because of the privacy policy of the Ecology Fund site, stats cannot be captured unless you sign up manually on the stats site.

There is also a little used Pay Pal link on the stats page for those who might like to make a monetary contribution towards the maintenance of these pages. Many thanks to Starfish for the time and dedication it took to develop and deploy these stats.

Team Helix is a group of individuals who have come together to find cures for such diseases as Alzheimer's, cancer and diabetes. Many members of Team Helix are currently offering their time in the memory of loved one's passed, while others are eager to find a cure for family members - or in some cases - themselves.

The end of the Genome Project: Members of BBR Reports Team Helix were saddened to learn of the decision by Stanford University to cease the Genome@Home project effective April 15th. Accomplishments by Team Helix’s 423 participating members included the completion of 3,117,441.67 work units and 168,784 genes. A significant number of Team Helix Genome@Home members are now utilizing their computers to continue the research work by running the Folding@Home Project.

Team Starfire continues to prove the existence of intelligent life on Earth by looking for it in space. Running the SETI@Home project sponsored by UC-Berkeley, this Broadband Reports team puts its spare cycles to work to analyze the “take” from radio telescopes like the Arecibo Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico.

The first phase of the SETI@Home project is expected to end soon. When it does, Team Starfire will gear up to start up on BOINC (see previous BBR report), the project that will replace the current one. The team currently occupies 6th place among all SETI teams worldwide. As has been the case for a long while, Team Starfire’s closest rival and partner is Team Anandtech. The friendly competition between the teams has benefited the project as each team strives to outpace the other.

One of Team Starfire’s best resources in the race is the fleet of “Crunchenstein” machines, which are owned by the team and hosted by members. This is another "blade" type project where members contribute computer parts to create a monster "cruncher". Crunchenstein has completed 66,886 work units to date.

Broadband Report's RC5-72 team is one of 3,900 teams competing for distributed.net, working to solve RSA Labs' 72-bit cryptographic challenge. Distributed.net teams have won both 56-bit and 64-bit challenges sponsored by RSA Labs. The RC-72 challenge was started over 500 days ago, and could potentially run for another 350,000 days at the current rate - if every possible key is examined.

Although there are less than 200 BBR members that participate in RC5-72, our output is comparable to larger teams. Currently, Broadband Reports' RC5-72 team has risen to 12th place worldwide. Your participation can boost the team's position. The BBR RC5 FAQ makes it easy to understand, install, and join the team.

Sounds like fun.

I may have to set that up when I get home.

Re: Sounds like fun.

Yeah, kinda does. I'm thinking either the decryption challenge or SETI, since the Folding project does not have a good PowerPC client.

I like RC5-72 and its rewards...

I have been doing that for a while and man Macs just plain rule for that work. RC5 also has its rewards for the key finder and the keyfinders team. This is definitely one I will run for a long while.

Maybe you have not noticed but the big "J" is not very fond of trinkets....Remember the spinning stars?

The teams that continue to have them are very lucky that (so far) they've been allowed to keep them, so I don't see any new trinkets being allowed right now.

Of course I could be wrong though....:)

Everyone can do something!

It doesn't matter what you want to do. Every computer can do a little bit to help the greater cause. It gives you that warm fuzzy feeling inside, as well as a sense of community here at broadbandreports. I have been a part of Team Discovery for a long time now and a proud host of 2 blades for Project Hope. My sense of loyalty and pride never goes down. It always goes up when I see the good work I am doing.

Re: Everyone can do something!

As a member of both Seti & Team Discovery here at BBR I can highly recommend either one. I can't think of any reason why anyone would not want to help find a cure for cancer. For all out there who have never contributed to a DC project I wish you would try it at least once.

Re: Everyone can do something!

All the DC projects here are worthwhile, fun and diverse. Where you might find in one the enjoyment of some friendly competition, another might be more of a supportive, family type atmosphere. Either way, you can't go wrong. It's all for a good cause.

I am a DC Addict :)

I have crunched or folded for all of the major BBR DC teams at one time or another. I am currently folding for Team Helix. I joined TH 6 1/2 months ago. I am getting ready to host three blades for TH's project, the Foldinator Project. We would love to have you as a part of TH and FP!

WTG simplykristi! I used to fold for Team Helix over three years ago, but went on to other DC projects, such as Seti and Team Starfire. Now that I have reached my 5th anniversary crunching Seti it is time for me to move on once more . . .this time to Seventeen or Bust (sorry . . .BBR does not host this team) and new horizons.

But I will always remain a member of BBR since this is my first and last home.

Lifemapper

I like participating in the Lifemapper project and daily clicking at ecologyfund.com

I have found the Lifemapper project very interesting on many levels. It feels great to do something that incorporates my love of technology and my love of biology and the ability to painlessly contribute to the "greater good" every day plus I can do this with my teenage son.

The administrators of the the Lifemapper project interact with the users at the support board and are very approachable. I have never had the experience working so closely with folks doing something this advanced.

This project goes hand-in-hand with the Climate Prediction project, since Lifemapper incorporates climate into it's species mapping information.

Ehh...

I'm sorry, but maybe I'm just not tech-savvy enough here, but I don't really understand how this works. Can someone explain to me in idiots terms what exactly the goal of this project is? It just seems very interesting...

To expand on Liontaur's post, you participate in a project
by downloading a client program to run on your PC.
By splitting a large problem up into a lot of small jobs,
which are then downloaded by paricpating members, it means
that the projects can benefit from CPU power matching or
exceeding that of the faster super-computers.

Typically the client will run in the background and make
use of spare CPU cycles which would otherwise be wasted.
Some projects have clients which can be run as a screensaver
but are typically less efficient as processing time is taken
to render the fancy graphics.

Most projects are flexible about how much time you donate
so feel free to try a few out. The BBR teams allow you to
work together and chat about the projects, and to compete
with other teams in the stats tables.

I'm starting to wonder...

I've been running SETI since the end of November '03... It's very heavy on your computers; even though the team tries to solve most of the processor overheating issues, one should think twice installing this service if they only have one computer to use.
Second, if there is intelligent life out there, then they'll come around Planet Earth if they wish, and in due time So I'm thinking of retiring or switching to another distributed cause that's closer to home, maybe dealing with more immediate problems such as health or environment...

If you run the SETI CLI client via SETI Driver and select the
"Idle" option, it ought to run cool enough. For me it runs
up to 10C cooler than when set on Low.

For alternate DC projects, check out Folding@Home (Team Helix),
which has an option to limit the max CPU used.

Alternatively Lifemapper (www.lifemapper.org) offers
a fast turn around on workunits, which would make it a
better choice for casual use.

The EcologyFund (Eco Clicks) project just means visiting
a website daily to click on a handful of links and donate
land (mainly rainforest) for free (paid for by the site
sponsors). It helps the environment, and doesn't use any
significant CPU, which makes it ideal to do alongside the
other projects.
