No need to be sad about it according to founder
(old news - 02:04PM Sunday Oct 14 2007)
tags: business · wireless · telco
AT&T’s recent $3 billion acquisition of wireless phone service provider Dobson Communications spells an end to the company’s 20-year stint in the industry. However, founder Everett Dobson doesn’t see it that way. He points to the fact that the telecom industry is one which is built on mergers and acquisitions.
“It's been (a business lifecycle) of rapid expansion and rapid consolidation. That's the exciting thing about this industry is that there will be additional startups and additional opportunities, and that's the nature of the telecom business.”
Dobson itself made over 30 acquisitions in its 20 years of operation; turning itself over to AT&T is just part of the game. Dobson says that the company will continue to have an impact on wireless communications even after the acquisition. How exactly that's going to happen remains unclear.

AT&T having Dobson = good for northern MI

I think this is a good mix for AT&T. Northern Michigan (most of Michigan in general) will now be served by AT&T, not just that south of Bay City area.

Dobson also has towers in...

Dobson has towers in northern michigan also. This includes the Oscoda area, Traverse, Mackinaw city, the U.P (ironton and near the minnesota border), pelliston, east tawas, the thumb (almost complete coverage),midland, and alpena. In certain areas of the U.P they are the ONLY GSM provider.

Re: Dobson also has towers in...

Also don't forget centennial wireless has extensive coverage in michigan. I personally prefer Centennial because AT&T has a lot of reception problems due to tower layouts and terrain.

clubs:
Cellular One (Dobson) is the only GSM provider for the ENTIRE UP, and its Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Ironwood, there is no ironton =P

I do agree that its great news, as cellone isnt very quick to bring new services.

Re: Dobson also has towers in...

Sorry ...I live in lower michigan...so sue me for not knowing EXACTLY . That aside this will be good because that may mean more coverage for all GSM users in michigan that are either on AT&T or go with companies that have roaming agreements with AT&T (centennial wireless *cough cough*)

I've had coverage (better coverage) on St. Joseph's Island and coverage in Sault Ste. Marie on NPI/Dobson, which currently saves me from Canada roaming.
In the past, when I was on AT&T Wireless, I had the North America package add on, which made Canada roaming/LD really cheap.

roaming fees ax'd

when AT&T adds up all the nickels, dimes and quarters they have to shell out to 3rd party cellular parties.. they calculate what it would cost just to BUY the company out.. when the numbers & stars align.. they drop the hammer,
AT&T is not the only one who does this... Verizon, Sprint, and to a smaller extent, Tmoble do the SAME THING.

Re: North Central WV

but WHEN is the real question...when (in folk's estimation) will the deal be finalized, the assets turned over and operations subsumed by AT&T. Basically, when can I walk into a store and buy an iPhone?

I'm guessing after Dec 2007 just for legal/tax purposes...
