Dial-up may still be available for users in rural areas, or users who just don't want (or can) pay for broadband, but as an extra perk for broadband customers, few will use it.
And for users who still must use dial-up, they're being totally forgotten about by web developers. Pages with so much flash, video, complex graphics, etc., are just standard these days. To browse the web relying on dial-up has got to be very painful.

I love what Nick Francesco (one of the co-hosts of Sound Bytes) said about Web developers who program to Internet Explorer, and refuse usage or support of anything but IE. To paraphrase, it's like standing outside a shop, and counting customers going in...1, 2, 3, 4...8, and then turning away the 9th and 10th customers. Similarly, they somehow purposefully want to turn away the growing Mac market, and fart in the general direction of Linux and indeed even some XP users.
I mean, I get it...they want to limit their support liability...but geeeeeezzz....no Macbooks? No 64-bit systems? I mean, there's focus, then there's just stupidity. -- English is a difficult enough language to interpret correctly when its rules are followed, let alone when a writer chooses not to follow those rules.

Everytime I check my email I have at a minimum several MBs to download. Dialup is not capable of handling that. Not when I have hundreds of megabytes each day to download from my 60+ email accounts. I could have possibly still used dialupduring the last century, but my needs have greatly exceeded dialup during all of the 21st century.
Using dialup would be like going back to watch SD. It just isn't going to happen. Most of the TV I've watched has been in HD since 2001. there is no way I could go back to SD watching, just like there is no way I could go back to dial up internet connectivity. It's too slow even for email.

I would rather drive to a WiFi hotspot than even begin to mess with dialup., How would I take a desktop to a WiFi hotspot? Not everyone has a laptop. We are not all business people or in school. I have no need of a laptop...except maybe now when Road Runner goes down as it does fairly often (twice this month) and I have no dialup backup anymore. I don't like laptops. To me, they are for folks who are forced to use them for a particular reason but they are so inferior to desktops that you wouldn't have one unless you had to for business or school. Besides, nearest RR hotspot is 5 miles from here and gas is too expensive to justify driving there just for that...plus you have to get dressed to do that! You can use your desktop in your home nude if you want to without even combing your hair ...why would anyone WANT to go to Borders, or the mall in order to have an RR hotspot? i've never understood it when I see people using a computer in Starbuck's. One reason to leave your home is to get away from the computer so why would you drag it around with you when you leave the house in order to do non computer stuff? -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. | That's assuming the WiFi hotspot offers faster speeds. I was at Meijer (a Midwest version of Walmart) and needed to load up a page to send an email. There was a Starbucks, so I assumed I could get access through an AT&T hotspot. Nope, had to use the store owned hotspot that went slower than dialup. And it didn't work with Ubuntu for some some reason, so I had to reboot into XP first.

| Bell Canada Internet Bell Canada Internet (formerly Sympatico Internet) does still offer limited free dialup to new plans and existing customers. Usage is limited to 10 hours per month, and a list of access numbers covers most area codes, however there are some pockets in which users will incur long distance charges as no local access number is available.
Bell Canada does still offer dialup only plans, however all information and pricing has been purged from their website making comparison shopping impossible. The impetus is to sign up all new customers into the highest priced DSL plans regardless if the technology is in place (or functional), or into their overloaded bastardized sub-WiMax-certified rural system (which requires professional hardware installation). -- Life - A bitter little ray of sunshine.

It was mainly useful when traveling, but hotel WiFi or ethernet is becoming common, albeit sometimes expensive. Now, I usually turn on Verizon Wireless tethering for the days I'm away. It's $60/mo but you can add or remove the feature at will, so it works out to $2/day, much cheaper than paying a hotel's $10+ fee.
