Time Warner Cable to kill perk in November
09:08AM Friday Oct 30 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: prices · business · alternatives · consumers
There's several broadband subscriber perks that have gone the way of the dodo in recent years. The most notable of course is free access to Usenet, but many ISPs have also done away with offering users free dial-up connectivity for travel or during outages. We know Cox is still offering it, but several Time Warner Cable and Road Runner customers write in to note the company this week is e-mailing its customers saying that they're no longer going to get free dial-up access starting November 30. With the availability of so much free Wi-Fi (much of it now being offered by carriers) it's apparently seen as an added, unnecessary expense. Is your ISP still offering it?

I've even got a dialup 56K modem with a donated HP PC(m7470n Media Center).

But yeah I don't think Verizon has dialup as a backup for DSL anymore, I could ask, But why?

Dial-up.

I haven't used dial-up in ages. With few computers being built with a modem, less customers are even able to use dial-up as a back-up, unless they go out and buy a modem. Dial-up may still be available for users in rural areas, or users who just don't want (or can) pay for broadband, but as an extra perk for broadband customers, few will use it.

And for users who still must use dial-up, they're being totally forgotten about by web developers. Pages with so much flash, video, complex graphics, etc., are just standard these days. To browse the web relying on dial-up has got to be very painful.

I've been stuck on dial-up for years... I manage, but it sucks. That's what you get for living in the middle of nowhere, I guess.

...at least not their service.

I love what Nick Francesco (one of the co-hosts of Sound Bytes) said about Web developers who program to Internet Explorer, and refuse usage or support of anything but IE. To paraphrase, it's like standing outside a shop, and counting customers going in...1, 2, 3, 4...8, and then turning away the 9th and 10th customers. Similarly, they somehow purposefully want to turn away the growing Mac market, and fart in the general direction of Linux and indeed even some XP users.

I mean, I get it...they want to limit their support liability...but geeeeeezzz....no Macbooks? No 64-bit systems? I mean, there's focus, then there's just stupidity.

Re: AT&T DSL offers it

you know, ok so Dial up sucks, but I think it gets a bum rap. I"m on it right now and VPN'd into work and while it's slow it's a lot better than nothing.

All these people who say they'd rather have no internet than dial up are kinda talking out the side of their mouth imho.

I disagree. having nothing is much better than dialup. Using dialup would be wasting time since it's so slow. I would rather drive to a WiFi hotspot than even begin to mess with dialup.,

Everytime I check my email I have at a minimum several MBs to download. Dialup is not capable of handling that. Not when I have hundreds of megabytes each day to download from my 60+ email accounts.
I could have possibly still used dialupduring the last century, but my needs have greatly exceeded dialup during all of the 21st century.

Using dialup would be like going back to watch SD. It just isn't going to happen. Most of the TV I've watched has been in HD since 2001. there is no way I could go back to SD watching, just like there is no way I could go back to dial up internet connectivity. It's too slow even for email.

Well, good for you! But not everyone has 60 MB of data to download, so dialup is a good alternative to nothing. Not everyone is like you....

really? I mean seriously it's slow but I worked today off it entirely. I'd much rather be at home to use it and still be around to help with other things (ie generator maintenance).

I'm not saying your wrong but I think you're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

How would I take a desktop to a WiFi hotspot? Not everyone has a laptop. We are not all business people or in school. I have no need of a laptop...except maybe now when Road Runner goes down as it does fairly often (twice this month) and I have no dialup backup anymore. I don't like laptops. To me, they are for folks who are forced to use them for a particular reason but they are so inferior to desktops that you wouldn't have one unless you had to for business or school. Besides, nearest RR hotspot is 5 miles from here and gas is too expensive to justify driving there just for that...plus you have to get dressed to do that! You can use your desktop in your home nude if you want to without even combing your hair ...why would anyone WANT to go to Borders, or the mall in order to have an RR hotspot? i've never understood it when I see people using a computer in Starbuck's. One reason to leave your home is to get away from the computer so why would you drag it around with you when you leave the house in order to do non computer stuff?

That's assuming the WiFi hotspot offers faster speeds. I was at Meijer (a Midwest version of Walmart) and needed to load up a page to send an email. There was a Starbucks, so I assumed I could get access through an AT&T hotspot. Nope, had to use the store owned hotspot that went slower than dialup. And it didn't work with Ubuntu for some some reason, so I had to reboot into XP first.

Yep. Most/all geeks will tether to their 2.5G (CDMA 1x, or EDGE, maybe GPRS) or 3G phone before resorting to dialup.

Dial-Up Back Up not seen at Embarq or Comcast!

From the time I subscribed to Broadband here in Central Florida in December 2006, I have seen no mention of Dial-Up Back Up, being available to customers of Embarq (now CenturyLink) or Comcast either free or for a fee. Readers let me know if I missed something like free Dial-Up Back Up.

Re: Dial-Up Back Up not seen at Embarq or Comcast!

i havent, when my cable modem is down it has been usually due to a power failure in which case my computer is down anyway. i have a UPS but if i fired up a game while on battery my rig would burn through the charge in no time.

We still have dial-up backup

The last I heard, Xmission was still offering dial-up backup to their DSL and Utopia customers. You can't use both simultaneously, though. You need to bring down your broadband in order to dial-up.

Wow

Its been so long since I even heard of dial up back up. Back in the 90's when we had dsl we had to use it quite a bit. Now being a comcast customer for 6 years or so I am sure there is no dial up back up. As many stated, I would be unprepaired for it anyway as all my modems are in a box in the cellar, and if the braodband went down, I would have no way to get drivers....

Dial Up backup?

i wouldn't even consider dial up. The last time I used dial up was in 1997 then I switched to a 5mbs down/1mbs up cable connection.

I would rather not have any internet access than mess with dial up.

When I lived in Oakland (CA), I had AT&T DSL and was provided dial-up back up. One of the times that I moved I used their dial-up until I got DSL back and it was painfully slow. This was all in the early part of the decade.

Now, I have U-Verse, don't have dial tone and could care less if there's a dial-up backup or not. Damn thing is tooooo slow and I don't have a dial tone anyways.

Bell Canada Internet

Bell Canada Internet (formerly Sympatico Internet) does still offer limited free dialup to new plans and existing customers. Usage is limited to 10 hours per month, and a list of access numbers covers most area codes, however there are some pockets in which users will incur long distance charges as no local access number is available.

Bell Canada does still offer dialup only plans, however all information and pricing has been purged from their website making comparison shopping impossible. The impetus is to sign up all new customers into the highest priced DSL plans regardless if the technology is in place (or functional), or into their overloaded bastardized sub-WiMax-certified rural system (which requires professional hardware installation).

Cox

I had it with Qwest's now-defunct VDSL, but my Cox plan only offers it as extra-cost.

It was mainly useful when traveling, but hotel WiFi or ethernet is becoming common, albeit sometimes expensive. Now, I usually turn on Verizon Wireless tethering for the days I'm away. It's $60/mo but you can add or remove the feature at will, so it works out to $2/day, much cheaper than paying a hotel's $10+ fee.

Xmission will still give their customers shell access if they ask for it. There have been a few times I haven't been able to download a podcast because the server kept timing out on me. I got it by logging into my shell account on Xmission, quickly grabbing it from there with wget (it's a Debian Linux bash shell), and then transferring it to my home machine in due time.
