Don't Say Cheese – MTA Mulls Ban On Photography In Subway System
by Straphanger Thursday 20-May-2004
If the Metropolitan Transit Authority has its way, straphangers won't be allowed to snap pictures on trains and buses anymore.

The MTA is looking to update its rules of conduct for the first time in 10 years, and one of the changes it's proposing is a blanket ban on all photography and videotaping in the city's subway system.

If it passes, the new regulation would mean that anyone caught taking footage with their camcorder would be questioned by police, who would then be allowed to issue a summons or even confiscate the footage. The only exceptions would be credentialed members of the media, or those who get written authorization from the MTA.

Re: F* The MTA

I think it is a decent request even if it prevents just one guy from filming or snapping shots to create some plot to take down the system.

Sure but if they work it correctly, getting a permit will allow for certain background checks. Anything can work correctly or poorly depending on how they run it.

if the sept. 11th hijackers got past INS, i doubt the MTA can do a better job.

Re: F* The MTA

Well that's the whole point. We are trying to get better, I hope. This is mostly the point of the commissions and all.

How will they enforce this?

I really don't see this being at all effective. How are they going to enforce it? What about all those tourists who take pictures of each other on the train who would likely be unaware of the law? Aren't we supposed to be sucking up to the tourists to pump up the local economy? Then you have the camera-phone issue, where it's easy enough to snap photos while all it looks like you're doing it checking your messages or whatever it is people do when they stare at the screens of their phones on the subway.

This is the dumbest thing I've heard since - well, since I went to bed last night, anyway.

They already question some people who take pictures right now but the police can't be everywhere. I did get reported once by a passenger for videotaping the Grand Central Station but the cops just shrugged at the guy.
