Download Cap Placed on Usenet
(old news - 01:23PM Saturday Oct 13 2001)
To Usenet Users:

DIRECTV Broadband is currently experiencing abnormally high traffic utilization on our network backbone, which affects users across our entire network. In order to ensure that all users have connectivity, we are enforcing a temporary throughput limit on connections to our Usenet server.

Effective immediately, each connection to our Usenet server
"news.directvinternet.com" will be bandwidth-limited to 256Kbps. [ed note: That's 32kb/s]

Usenet users may see slower than normal downloads while this limit is in place, especially when retrieving large binary files.

We believe this will alleviate the network emergency we are experiencing and allow us to deliver continuous service to all subscribers while we investigate a permanent solution. We will provide updates here as news develops.

We appreciate your business and thank you for your patience.

DIRECTV Broadband, Inc.

When temporary really means permanent.

I predict that this is just to test the waters and see what subscribers' reactions will be. I bet that they keep this cap in place permanently. Which is bad, because other providers might follow suit.

Re: When temporary really means permanent.

Usenet has really gone to hell at Directv/Telocity.com. They have now PERMANENTLY implemented a daily download CAP of 200MB per day maximum per account. After you have reached your daily limit, you can't even download headers until MIDNIGHT when the clock starts over again. They do allow three simultaneous connections, but if you are downloading on three connections, your 200 MB limit will be gone well before the day is half-over. This is bullshit. I'm probably gonna go to SpeakEasy.net which uses Supernews, and which also gives you a static IP --- the only downside is the $149.00 for the DSL modem , 1 year service agreement, and $10.00 per month increase in cost ($59.99) to get the static IP.

Twice as fast as Ameritech

Ameritech did this some time ago to its ADSL customers. I think it stinks, and am about to cancel my company's
subscription to Ameritech, who charges a SEPARATE $6.00 per month for the usenet access. Why are they picking on Usenet? The US will never have true broadband until the broandband providers grow up.

Re: Twice as fast as Ameritech

In case the title of my previous post wasn't clear enough, Ameritech limits Usenet access downoads to 128, which you must divide by 8 to get a true picture of just how slow it is.

256?

I just called Telocity tech support about something unrelated and an automated message came up when I called that claimed they were limiting the bandwidth to the news server to 128Kbps.

They also claimed it was temporary. Suuuuurrrrreeeeeee.
