1 edit | About time! It's about time Verizon gets out of the stone ages and expands their smartphone portfolio. Personally I am looking at the Motorola Droid myself, but with so many android phones coming out in the next few months, it's tough to commit 100% till I see what else big red is getting.

I guess if you are basing your impressions on a single picture and a bunch of speculation, then its very positive. Personally, I want to see a detailed review on this before I get my hopes up. The Android 2.0 OS is pretty well known and BoyGeniusReport did provide a few bullet points from their hands on. I'm with you though, everyone creamed their pants when the Pre was released and it's (so far) turned out to be rather mediocre.
I'm hoping this phone will be a winner though as so far, it's got everything I want; it's thinner than my iPhone, is a slider with a full QWERTY keyboard, larger/higher resolution screen, it supports Exchange (but does that mean push support? What about tasks and calendar?), and the web browser is based on Chrome with built-in flash support. Oh and it's not on a GSM network. (Ok, that was a cheap shot, but I really hate my AT&T service.)
On paper, it looks GREAT. Here's hoping it's not all hype. -- "What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried?" - Abraham Lincoln

So many things to go over, so little time.

They're skipping HSDPA so they'll be behind everyone else until LTE is out and they NEED something semi cool to get customers. This Droid phone certainly fits the bill and google spanked them around and forced them to support net neutrality. I definitely like where this is going ! Adi Verizon is skipping HSDPA because they run a CDMA network. HSDPA runs on top of the UMTS network. LTE is the next logical move for them and they've announced 50 markets that will be LTE by the end of next year. -- "What is conservatism? Bell and Telus in Canada make the switch from CDMA/EVDO to UMTS/HSDPA in November for example...

Bell and Telus in Canada make the switch from CDMA/EVDO to UMTS/HSDPA in November for example... Verizon is completely bypassing HSDPA and moving to LTE. LTE is GSM/UMTS based, but is not compatible with HSDPA. So if Verizon wanted to support HSDPA they'd have to roll that out in addition to LTE. Just like when AT&T rolls out LTE it won't be compatible with their HSDPA 3G network. So it makes zero sense to roll out HSDPA if they're rolling out a newer technology already. -- "What is conservatism? | Bring down your PRICES .... The Droid phone looks great ... now make it even better by having a service plan better then other cell phone providers ... I would pay $300 for a good cell phone .. but the service plan for smart phones are too high ...
I figure a with unlimited talk, text and a limit on internet surfing and make it under $45.00 would would be nice ..
Verizon step up and due it cheaper then AT&T ....

| just one catch? "given Verizon's history with closed networks and crippled devices, you have to wonder where the catch will be."
Uhh...would that there was only one catch. I fully expect the Droid phone to demonstrate the full extent of their anal retentive control freak nature. Probably we'll see multiple catches.
Perhaps it will finally STFU all the iTards out there who are frothing at the mouth over when the jesus phone will finally escape from AT&T, when they discover that Verizon is actually much worse than AT&T in terms of open-ness with devices on their network.
All wireless providers suck. Some suck worse.

| No... No, sorry, this is still not the droid we are looking for. I think it's fair to say we will never find the droid we are looking for, and moto will end up with another huge flop sadly failing to reproduce its huge razr success. People fail to realize that motorola is a US company, and since when have us electronics companies beaten the competition?
It was though, fun to laugh at the first photo i saw of the droid. I don't think i've ever randomly laughed at a product in such a way before. Why doesn't moto go back to making car radios?

| Looking forward to the VZ Droid phone Thanks for posting the news Karl! I am very interested in the phone. I am curious if VZ will require the $30/month data plan like they do with blackberries or if I can continue to use my $15/month 'unlimited' data plan.
Anxiously await reviews to see how locked down the phone will be.
