Trying out a small provider for deployment
(old news - 02:09PM Saturday Aug 18 2007)
tags: wireless · municipal
EarthLink is the name that consistently comes up in discussions of municipal Wi-Fi deployment. But Long Island is forgoing big companies like EarthLink in favor of trying out a small provider called e-Path Communications. E-Path has recently been selected by the area to build and operate an outdoor network that will cover 750 square miles across two counties, paid for entirely by the private sector. In an interview with MuniWireless, Chief Operating Officer Michael Martin said that the revenue from the system would come from promoting managed services to small businesses rather than from municipal applications such as public safety provisions although successful municipal deployments have normally used the latter.

Sounds interesting

If it works out well with keyspan/lipa, I could see them expanding services into queens and brooklyn

ok

IMHO, Keyspan didn't want the financial responsibility of when it went under...so they used E-Path as the middle man.

I've seen the footprint that KeySpan has (think everywhere a telephone pole is....), and on most significant roads there is fiber that they ran, manage, and own.

I've seen their network map, and WOW! KeySpan was going to provide my company 50/50 for next to nothing. They had the capability to scale us up to multi gigabit with no trouble.

I really think that LightPath/Cablevision should have taken this on. With the new Cisco AP's with the built in DOCSiS modems....

CV should have "partnered" with this company, made them fork over the $$ to buy a bunch of these.....and then just dropped them on poles.

contracts

Well, when this gets underway... its no surprise both cablevision and verizon are big on dual/triple play contracts to lock in customers (while they still can)... Recently got a cablevision flyer for a 2 year contract / price guarantee @ 29.95 for triple play...

Who might be left to pay for broadband / phone service if they can get both from 3rd part providers, both services free or dirt cheap...?

Hmm, let me think... Much less than now..

start-up

The guys running E-Path, are dot-com internet start-up type guys. They sold one of their last companies to Verizon. What do you think their plan is here? Where do you think the first places are they will go for the hundreds of millions it will take to build this network?

Verizon? Cablevision? At least one of these two companies (if not both) will buy stakes. E-path will begin planning. The sell-out will occur as a standard dot-com IPO exit strategy - 3 years. Then Verizon or Cablevision will put the kabash on the whole thing. Levi & Suozzi are fools for choosing this company; with the least experience & absolutely no credentials.

E-Path = Question mark

Levi & Suozzi are fools.
Do either of them have a clue?
E-Path must have done a hellva sales presentation to these two rubes in order to get this contract (that or offered them very generous kickbacks).
Excuse me but what ever happened to the public bidding on this project??

E-Path is a big question mark. Their website is weak..
The last news items posted on it are 2 from September 2006?? There is nothing about this deal posted on it.
As far as experience in deploying a Wi-Fi network all I read in the muniwireless.com article is that COO Martin mentioned e-Path has a 16-square-mile project under way in Delray Beach, Florida and supposedly the company is in the running for a project in Trenton NJ, but there's no mention on their website of any of their projects or customers???

As much as I'd love to see Long Island with a public Wi-Fi network I'm wondering if this pig will even fly.

Unfortunately, the average disposable (discressionary) income on Long Island and footprint of both FIOS and Optimum Online don't exactly make this a front burner issue. Their efforts might be better served in lowering the cost of living on Long Island vs free wifi..

Just because Long Island has more fiber optic bandwidth available per person than other parts of the country is outweighed by the rampant price inflation & cost of living increases coupled with virtually stagnant wage increases (aka stagflation), so Long Island won't be any more competitive if there were wifi here..

Is it a substitute for developing youth programs or other vastly underfunded social programs like HEALTHCARE? Hmm... I'll get back to you on that one.
