Cities like Binghamton will see Fios, it just won't be for five to ten years.

Actually, it turns out that people in lower income areas often spend as much or more on video services as they do in upper income areas. So yes, it is a decision based on $$$, but no, that doesn't mean they avoid 'blue collar' areas when deciding where to go with fios.

Often? Where did you get this data?
Again, I'd be shocked if there is not some very interesting number crunching going on at Verizon HQ. I'd have a hard time believing the suits at Verizon haven't analyzed every neighborhood based on every criteria under the sun, from race and density to income and favorite toothpaste, then made decisions accordingly based on a combination of calculations that told them where the maximized profit potential lay....

| Problem is, Rochester's incumbent isn't Verizon - it's Frontier. Maybe if Verizon went on an M&A spree, Rochester would get FiOS... someday.
It'd be nice if Frontier were to roll out FttP. As it is, however, through a bunch of corporate shenanigans, Frontier has gone from a local telco (Rochester Telephone), to local/LD/mobile (as part of Global Crossing), to a nationwide hodgepodge of mostly rural fixed-line carriers (as part of Citizens Communications). Frontier's DSL deployment is probably worse than Qwest's, because they don't want to can't afford to spend the money for a serious go at it.
Sorry for the rant. It's just that my parents, who live not too far from Rochester, can get either RoadRunner ($50 a month!) or satellite - no DSL. They use $10 dialup instead.
Fact of the Day: Frontier Cellular was acquired by Bell Atlantic Mobile, which then became Verizon Wireless. Thus, most of VZW's footprint in upstate New York was actually owned by Frontier at one time.

| hicks in the sticks? Can't get my mind around it.. millions for a wireless service hicks from upstate really want?
They don't even want north-south powerlines in their backyard, much less evdo high powered microwave antennas dotting the landscape... sheesh,
wouldn't the money be better spent on FIOS?
or in places where there is REAL DEMAND for services like wireless broadband access?
This is where shareholers should be MORE concerned about Verizon WASTING money, throwing it in the vast caverns of upstate NY covering only 8 million people, of which how many are going to want this? Not many.

Many of the people fighting the powerlines in NY & PA are former NYC residents (like myself) who have invested in homes along the rivers and don't want massive towers in their backyards. Or artists who relocated there because you can actually buy a house without mortgaging a child....
There is "Real demand" for EV-DO in upstate NY cities. I know, because I edit this website full time from there. Am I a hick?
People there are by and large normal people; classifying them as hicks certainly makes Floral Park, NY look good.

| hey karl quick question for you with this cellular type of internet. I know they are all pretty much super restrictive with the use of it. Would I be able to per say play WoW or EQ2 on it without them kicking me from the service. Using a desktop and a pcmcia to pci card adapter. Most cellular internet seems to say no PC to PC aplications and how can you not be PC to PC with the internet, or ar they meaning P2P network and filesharing type things. | |

| Re: hicks in the sticks? You might cross their 10gig monthly limit if you really play a lot (and download a lot); the high latency probably wouldn't be good for WOW or EQ2 either. Other problem is I think that in addition to the $60-$80 monthly charge, if I remember right, they charge you another $15-20 in order to use the service via laptop, so it's pretty cost and use restrictive for now. | |

| Re: hicks in the sticks? I don't think the latency would be the big factor im on 24.4k dial up as is and nothing better in my area satalite even turned us down saying the area is over sold. lol So I am kinda on a last ditch effort now. Thanks for the info. Oh the ping times I see right now are around 500ms anyways. | |

| I'm currently posting this over an EVDO connection. I get 150ms pings on average and my current speed is 1200kps download. The upload stinks and I will the ping was lower..... My savior is on the way... EVDO Rev A is rolling out in all Sprint locations. Expect full rollout by the end of next year, well ahead of schedual.
EVDO Rev A has speed up to 3mb and uploads to 1.8mb. The Ping is supposedly in the mid double digits.
To sum it up... I can't wait for Rev A. This works good for now and has me on a solid mobile connection.
I play Everquest 2 over it and it works good. FPS games might not though, but EQ2 is more forgiveing. Everquest2 relies more on bandwidth then sub 100ms pings. You need bandwidth for MMORPGs.

| Re: hicks in the sticks? thanks much for all this info. Now i just need to figure out what type of cellular coverage to use I am really new to that type of internet. I currently have cingular as a cell phone but we also have Alltel in the area and Verizon just showed up. I also think we have Sprint not sure will ahve to do some research to make sure. Oh with playing eq2 do you get anywhere near your caps on service? I Don't want to buy all this gear to get online and then get kicked off the service for over use is all. | |

Slingerlands was one of the first in the nation to get fios, we were also a beta market for road runner back in the day and the uptake here is very high. Dont talk sh*t about what you dont know. How about we cut the funding to your town here in albany, and then we'll see who is the hick. -- "He who is not afraid today to say 'no' to the repressive machinery of a criminal bureaucracy earns the right to be called a Human Being." | Re: hicks in the sticks? just 'cause you send a relatively unknown republican down here to be groomed as a GoBerner once in a blue moon (at the behest of us downstate people), that you people upstate have ANY significant political power in making NY state laws... haha,
With that being said, both culture and location determine that people live in the 'sticks' as it were.. Locating a blanket of EVDO towers in the middle of rural or sub-suburbs (avg more than 5 acres per lot) country for a bunch of hicks is not a financially good idea.
You should also know that Verizon will NEVER fairly price the service in markets with little/no competition. So, good luck with what you THINK your going to get up there...

quote: You should also know that Verizon will NEVER fairly price the service in markets with little/no competition.
Verizon never fairly prices services anywhere, Demand for EVDO exists everywhere upstate, upstate residents aren't hicks any more than you're a mindless suburban botox sheep that overpays for lame import car parts, and oh - you're a troll.
How's those property taxes? Or, and this is my guess, does Dad (or grandad) pay those and you're just a spoiled Long Island kid whose never left suburbia, pretends he's true NYC, and has no clue what he's talking about when it comes to quality of life in NY state?
You probably spend your 99% of your time in a five mile block stretch of manicured lawns and chain stores, and you're going to lecture upstate residents on culture? Sophistication? You're kidding, right?
Ever been to Ithaca? Probably more culture there than in all of Western Long Island.
