EVDO in Vegas
Verizon Expands wireless broadband
by Karl Bode Wednesday 28-Jul-2004 tags: coverage · wireless
Verizon's EV-DO wireless broadband service offers speeds between 300 and 500kbps, but so far had only been available in Washington DC and San Diego. While Verizon Wireless had promised a national deployment, today they've announced that residents of Las Vegas now have access to the broadband service. The company has promised to spend around two billion dollars over the next two years to get the service deployed to the largest metropolitan areas.

Anyone using this?

Just wanted to know their experiences and whether it is worth the price.

The Washington Post offered up a fairly positive review back in March:

One downfall is the upstream speeds kind of stink....

the service works as fast as dsl or faster with a few bars of signal. where signal is weaker... i have seen my clients go down to about 300k.. ... it is as reliable as a cell phone... let me know if you have any other questions and want to try a demo... robert kim - verizon agent... 619 972 4800

No phones?

No phones currently support EV-DO. I believe only the new PC Cards do (which are expensive). I believe we are looking at late fall/winter at the earliest for a EV-DO capable phone.

Check out the review of the EV-DO phone from Samsung on www.pcmag.com. It was much delayed but is out now.

nice but

The system Cingular is working on will be much faster (1.5mbps they say) for around the same price. It's kinda nice to see competition in the terrestrial wireless internet field though.

Re: nice but

EVDO is equal to what GSM is doing next on the ATT/Cingular networks. Verizon rate limits.

I would love to rent the cards in Vegas, Broadband in the hotels is almost non-existent.

A GREAT market for them to tap!

Alaska has EV-DO

Washington, DC & San Diego are not the only available markets for EV-DO at those speeds.

Re: Alaska has EV-DO - How to Use it

No. Alaska does not have EVDO. ACS LOCATED IN alaska has evdo. a Verizon User cannot use EVDO service in Alaska --- UNLESS... loop hole: each carrier has a FCC mandate to allow 15day service trial. so... if you are a verizon customer... this is what you'd do to use the evdo in Alaska.

1) get Verizon EVDO broadband service. (i want to set you up with this when you are ready).
2) Go to alaska (heck fishing and AnselAdams style photo expeditions are not uncommon up there) and call me back to "release your evdo ESN from your verizon account"
3) Get a 15 day trial run of the ACS service in Alaska.
4) Day 15. Cancel it and just pay for the time of use prorated.
---Everyone wins ACS gets a few bucks they'd have never made otherwise. you get service... and you only had to buy one card. thats how its done... to get Wireless Broadband started on your Laptop... evdo-coverage.com

So when can I get EVDO in Atlanta...?

EVDO in Atlanta, Boston, NYC...

We basically use 4 criteria in determining where to roll out EVDO next. So if you are in Atlanta, Orlando, Boston, NYC, or Houston this is relevant to you.

1) Early adoption of Technology Demographics
2) Market Size (laptops in area)
3) Geo Isolation
4) Cost to delploy vs. profit forcast.

So.. to answer your question... i There is an NDA that prevents me from telling you WHEN.. but... i can say that SD, SC and Vegas were the first 3 due to these precise factors. Atlanta... by the way... is a huge tech hub... so you are very close...

for up to the hour coverage of EVDO rollout locations... see »evdo-coverage.com coverage maps and press releases will be available there...

Re: EVDO in Atlanta, Boston, NYC...

I have had express network all you can eat for over a year at 80 bucks. When this becomes available I am gonna upgrade. my only complaint is the round-trip time which I hear won't change with evdo. I get 500+ msec round trip and would like something like ~50 so I could play quake and do voip which my company is goint to in their offices..

How to Connect to New EVDO Antennas

I had a client who was physically in Vegas during the EVDO launch. he never got the 10x faster connection speed.. you will not either unless you update your prl. this is short for Primary Roaming List...

The PRL is what lets your mobile device "See" the newest towers we are rolling out on a daily basis... if you have a friend with a new cell phone that gets better reception that you do... the simplest assumption is that his reception is better because his phone is newer... not so...

newer phones have Worse reception than older ones in generall now... why? - lets get into this later...

Meanwhile... update your prl... this will show you the newest antennas out there.. on your cell ...its a simple *228 send and follow the prompts.

More details below...
