Earthlink CEO Dies
Cancer related complications
by Karl Bode Wednesday 03-Jan-2007 tags: business
Tipped by ABL1 See Profile
Earthlink president and chief executive officer Garry Betty died Tuesday from cancer-related complications at the age of 49, according to the company. Betty had just been diagnosed and stepped down from his duties last November. "Garry was an extraordinary business partner and friend, and he will be sorely missed," said Earthlink founder Sky Dayton in a statement. "Garry accomplished so much and made life better for so many people, that as we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his achievements." Betty was integral in navigating the company's post dial-up strategy, which included everything from investing in broadband over powerline (BPL) providers and building municipal Wi-Fi networks to offering line-powered voice service over Covad's UNE-L network.

Re: God Bless...

Wow, the "big Casino" at 49. Cancer took both my parents young, so I'm always looking over my shoulder for that dude with the robe and cycle.

Fourty nine is just too damn young for anyone to die.

It's sad...

Re: God Bless...

I think the word you are looking for is sickle, although technically what the dude in the robe carries is a scythe.

A dude with a robe and cycle could just be a judge riding to work.

Sad about Mr. Betty either way. Cancer knows no age restrictions.

That's not good. I feel sorry for his family and the people he knew well for the company he worked for. Don't be a prick.
Have some respect for crissakes.

This is one of those things where no matter how you feel about someone, you are saddened to hear about.

This thread wasn't started so you could bash the company the guy ran. This isn't the Rants forum.

My Condolences

Sadly my wife ( 38 ) of the last 10 years who was diagnosed with the big C last May. It's tough going through radiation, chemo and surgery but with any luck we'll make it. I'm sorry that Garry did not make it.

Mr. Betty may you rest in peace in Heaven

First I just wanted to say thanks for creating Earthlink. I had Earthlink High Speed through my cable provider (Time Warner) and it worked for me and my family. Thanks for being there for us. I've been a customer for over a yr but right now I'm using Road Runner. Same as your service but Road Runner had longer in the run.

Second, I want to wish your family well after you had passed away. It must had been hard for them. You died at a very young age. May God rest your soul!

To all Earthlink customers, Mr. Betty was not only who provided us high speed but he was a loyal man, strong, and a great chief executive officer. Earthlink keep up the good work, if not try better than ever!

He was a Scientologist! Have some respect for his beliefs. He's going to go fight that big minotaur thing from Tom Cruise's movie "The Legend." If he wins, he goes to The Perpetual Oscar Awards Ceremony."

Ouch...

... it seems it was just the other day when I read here that he was diagnosed... it's crazy how fast he passed away. My maternal grandparents died of cancer so I'm always tremble for my retired parents health but I'm not sure how I will end up either...
He shall RIP.

That's Really, Really Young

My condolences to Betty's family. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004 and am just now recovering from all the poisonous medicine you're given in hopes of curing it. But on a positive note, did you ever notice the great number of achievements made by some who die so young? Betty was right up there with the best in that department.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family....

Wow. I remember seeing him in late October while troubleshooting a telecom issue for the corporate board room.

Life goes in the blink of an eye. God bless you, Garry. For what it's worth, Garry always treated me well when I had to support him or his assistant's desktop support needs.

Rest in peace and may God be with you.
