Developing hot spots instead of citywide Wi-Fi
(old news - 10:33AM Sunday Dec 09 2007)
tags: wireless · alternatives · municipal · EarthLink
Back in August Earthlink paid out a $5 million penalty to the city of Houston for its failure to meet deadlines in citywide Wi-Fi development. It’s not clear yet at this time whether Earthlink is going to continue with the project or not although most signs point to no. In the meantime, Houston is using the money that they gained from the loss to work on bridging the digital divide in their community.
“Under plans being drawn up by the city, $3.5 million of that penalty fee would go toward creating free, WiFi hotspots in 10 neighborhoods and helping residents there acquire equipment and training to use the Internet, said Richard Lewis, the city's director of information technology.”
This is part of a digital inclusion plan to get Internet access to the city’s student and elderly populations.

Interesting......

the four-year agreement, which was never finalized due to a political tug-of-war between the mayor and the governing Board of Supervisors
So if the city delayed the project and caused earthlink to not meet the deadline, the city collects $5 million. FREE MONEY! Thats the best deal ever. I suppose I would delay it too. Sounds like the lawyers messed up that contract.

Re: Interesting......

It's called a non-performance clause !

EL lawyers really screwed up big time, or they got kick-backs from the board of supervisors not to put the clause in the customer side of the agfreement..!

EarthLink prepping for sale....

According to inside sources, they are not actively going after any new customers. They are just maintaining where they are right now, possibly lining up for a buyout.

Idiots

$3.5 for hotspots, and computer equipment. GOod thing they don't need that money for roads, bridges, schools, water, parks, etc. Those things can wait. ALL MUST HAVE INTERNET ACCESS AT ALL TIMES!
God, the Internet sucks. (He wrote, ironically.)

Houston Wireless

Houston Wireless Users Group, an organization of wireless geeks, offered to help Houston design a plan and deploy it. Instead they went with the dumb Earthlink plan and it was a total cluster. I guess the city hit the jackpot, though.
