Earthlink Expands Presence In California Will offer cable broadband via Time Warner Cable Earthlink is in a bit of a bind. The company lost $80 million on Muni-Fi last year, their investments in broadband over powerline have gone nowhere, the government says they can't share access to next-generation broadband networks, and their effort to run an MVNO (Helio) flamed out spectacularly. What's left? The company is still allowed to offer access via Time Warner Cable's cable broadband network as a condition of the $109 billion Time Warner AOL merger, and for the first time in a while the troubled company expanded those offerings throughout California. From the OC Register: Earthlink is expanding its high-speed Internet service today in our area and offering cable Internet to folks living in Time Warner land. Earthlink, which also offers DSL, has offered the service but to a limited number of people approximately 400,000 in the Los Angeles area. Today, 4 million people in our area can opt for Earthlink. In O.C., residents of Fullerton, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Brea and Yorba Linda now have an alternative. Time Warner Cable recently inherited the Los Angeles networks after Adelphia imploded. Unfortunately for Earthlink, it looks like the deal only allows them to offer a max speed of 6Mbps over the network ($29.95 for the first six months and $41.95 per month after). While it probably won't save them, it's an interesting expansion at a time when most people were expecting Earthlink to die off. The company had previously stated that their primary survival tactic was going to involve, believe it or not, refocusing on dial-up.

When Earthlink let all of them go, they went on to other companies. I also think that a lot of them if they were able to come back, won't.
I use to work for Earthlink Tech Support and can tell you horror stories on how we tried to get management to listen to us.

| Earthlink -surprises ELNK is maybe smelling the coffee. I recently received a call form True-Voice support and was given an unpublished number and pin to escalate my ongoing VOIP issues. Seems I told the agent on my last bout that I enjoy ELNK's offering but the reliability just isn't there and that I would have to go with a different provider because of the lack of reliability. "Maybe" ELNK is listening to it customers- the person calling was articulate and spoke English well enough for this 50% deaf dude to understand. Now if they could only partner with someone that had an infrastructure that could deliver a Internet connection that is just a cut above miserably unreliable | |

Maybe they better get in to a new business - like become an outsourcing agent for customer support, customer setup, inhouse LAN's, etc.
It tried the overbuild way with BPL and WiFi and that died; it tried reselling cell service; and it is now trying to become a 3rd party broadband reseller. None of it has worked or is likely too. And with dial-up their days are numbered as well. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?
| | | I have TWC HSI from ELNK And I like it just fine. It's cheaper than TWC offering of $45/m when you bundle phone or TV. I can go to the local TWC office in downtown to get the modem replaced when it dies. I get to keep my @earthlink.net emails addresses for my self and parents (main reason I stick around). Earlier this year I got upgraded to 8/768 when TWC FINALLY stated offering more than just a 6/348 tier. And I still pay $41.95 just like I did 5+ years ago.
I do wish they would move CS back to the US, that was great, but I haven't needed to call them since mid last year.

It used to be a capped supernews account until giganews bought them.
| | | | What about the connections between Earthlink leadership, past and present and the church of scientology.... is that upsetting to you? | |
| | | hrobinsPremium join:2000-10-15 Regina, SK 1 edit | Re: I have TWC HSI from ELNK When I worked there we were told to say that Earthlink is not a part of the Church of Scientology. While they may have connections to the Church of Scientology in the past, Sky has sold a lot of his stock in the company and has no say in the day to day running of the company anymore. So their may not be anymore connections to Earthlink from the Church, I chould be wrong. | |

What's the point of ELN using TWC's cable modem service? What's different from using TWC RR that people use beside software and branding?
Is this like @Home with Adelphia PowerLink back in early 2000s?
| | | | Re: TWC ELN vs. TWC RR? One advantage is if you only want HSI from RR you do NOT have to pay the extra $10 per month TWC charges for not having cable TV or Phone. ELink is the flat rate. | |
