Earthlink Suffers From Major E-mail Outage
Downed server causes multi-day troubles...
by Karl Bode Monday 23-Nov-2009 tags: business · trouble · Earthlink Cable Modem Service
Users in our Earthlink forum have been complaining about an Earthlink e-mail outage that began last Friday, and persisted through the weekend. While some users say their e-mail service has since been resolved, others say they were left without e-mail for more than three days. In conversations with Earthlink, the company says the issues are server failure related, but the company wouldn't get more specific. The problems appear to be impacting all Earthlink users, including dial-up, DSL and cable customers. The Wall Street Journal also noted the outage but similarly got no comment from Earthlink.

Of course, we aren't talking about the few times Gmail has gone down either... huh...?

ALL email is subject to have down time and issues... it's not related to just an ISP ... the main reason that one would usually avoid ISP email is they are then STUCK with that provider as it makes it harder to migrate away from them later.. not becuase they have email issues.

Yahoo, Gmail, and many of the other large email services have had problems.... TWC, Comcast, ATT ... email problems.. anyone who hosts their email with indi providers.. problems..

... in the end.. email isn't perfect no matter who hosts it.

I'm sure that the Earthlink email problem upset all remaining 1,000 people who still use it.

Re: ISP Email

I run my own Exchange server. That hasn't been 100% problem free but when something goes down I know the most effort is being made to restore service.

Also, I could take a backup and restore on a new server if need be. Or I can choose to setup a new server and start filling blank mailboxes (at least I get my mail).

Or if I get tired one day I can just point my domain somewhere and use it with "ISP email!"

Umm, yeah, I had outages with Gmail before so webmail is not the cure all.

Most people do not know how to set up their own email server and the major players in web based email have had outages.

it's not hard to go to GoDaddy and read their online help site to figure that out. and what is the excuse for the people that post on here that still use ISP email and then complain about it when it's down?

As said time and time again, this site houses people with above average understanding of how the internet works. To the average user, it's all greek to them.

Most reliable e-mail?

I am considering changing ISP's and would like to use a public e-mail service rather than being locked to my ISP's e-mail service. From readers experience, which company provides the most reliable e-mail service without being stuck with complex terms and conditions or limited storage?

I second the Google Mail.
Have all my domain based e-mails go to Google and the filtering is great for me.

I will also say Google Mail. In fact, you could even purchase a unique domain name and use it with gmail. I have three domain names that I own and have email setup for each one through gmail. Works really well and I don't have to worry about ISP's going defunct and have to change my email address.

Even with what I have setup now if gmail goes away I can move my email and domain name to a new provider.

Re: Most reliable e-mail?

You can do this with any provider. Many hosts give domains away and charge pennies on the dollar per month for hosting to do more.

OfficeLive does this, Hotmail does this, Yahoo! Does this. HostPapa.com allows this. etc.

Goodbye Earthlink

This may be unrelated but a couple of weeks ago some people sending me email to my earthlink hosted domain based email was bouncing back with an error message suggesting that the sender was emailing from a relay or zombied computer with instructions to send an email to blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net with no additional instructions. If you send this email you get no instructions back, nothing happens. My first chat with off shore tech support (web hosting used to have US tech support but no more) said he would fix the problem (he couldn't and he didn't) and he also sent me the instructions that people should follow if they couldn't email me (see below). How am i supposed to send these instructions to people if I don't know who isn't reaching me? The big Catch-22 that they failed to appreciate. Perhaps Joseph Heller isn't read in India.

Another inane and circular conversation went on between me and a supervisor for almost 3 hours with them basically claiming that a) they couldn't help me directly and b) people who have trouble reaching me should email blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net after which they will get an auto-response with instructions (they don't).

Finally I asked the supervisor, who claimed there was no higher tier of support to "stand up and wave your arms at the person down the hall who is your boss and ask them to come over" which she actually did. Perhaps 3 hours on the phone with me was enough. The Uber Supervisor after talking to me for 30 minutes or so finally agreed to contact the abuse dept directly in Atlanta but then said "sorry they're closed for the day".

End result: during this 3+ hour phone call to hell, i researched better and cheaper web hosting companies and found one that looked great and that has 24/7 US based tech support for about $4/month instead of ELN's $20/month. Everytime I call them they answer right away, and have been very helpful. I canceled my ELN web hosting account and will never go back to them for anything, ever. There is a reason they're slowly going out of business.

---
The long instructions. Can you imagine asking people to actually do this?

Here are some additional info, based on instructions that came from EarthLink Abuse (I highlighted the more important sections):
PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE EMAIL TO RESOLVE YOUR ISSUE
This email address is only for those issues where EarthLink appears to be blocking a mail server and mail is returned with the the following error messages: "550 Dynamic/zombied/spam IPs blocked. Write blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net ".
EarthLink may be blocking your mail server because the server is/was listed in a dynamic IP range, an open proxy, a compromised machine, or major source of spam.
In order to help you with your issue we will need some information from you. If you are the administrator of this mail server, please follow the instructions below before emailing us back.
If you do not know what IP address your server is sending with, please contact the mail administrator of your company or your ISP and have them follow the instructions below.
If you are the administrator of the email server being blocked, please know you may be able to expedite unblocking by checking to see if your mail server is listed in the following lists and resolving before emailing us:
The CBL

This is a list of IPs that may be currently infected and sending spam unknowingly.
Spamhaus

From their website you will be able to query your IP to see if it listed in any of their 3 lists that track dynamic IPs, zombied IPs, and IPs that are known to purposely send spam. EarthLink blocks IPs known to be dynamic, zombied, and purposely sending spam.
If your mail server/gateway IP is not on these lists, is not dynamic, and is not an open relay/proxy/zombie, please reply back to blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net with 'BLOCKED ' in the subject line with the mail server/gateway IP inserted.
Blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net does not block any mail sent to it; so, if possible, please email us from the server in question. All reports sent to this address, not using this format will receive this auto response. This process will allow us minimize the amount of time to resolve any blocking issues. Please note, any emails you send to us without the formatted subject lines are not kept. If you included important information in that first unblock request, please make sure that information is included in your subject-formatted response.
Thank you for your cooperation,
EarthLink Abuse
To recap:
The person/company blocked by EarthLink should check if their server is/was listed in a dynamic IP range, an open proxy, a compromised machine, or major source of spam. They could check if their server’s IP address is listed in the two websites indicated above.

If their IP address is part of a dynamic IP range, is an open relay, or has been known to be a major source of spam, they should resolve that first before contacting EarthLink.

The person/company blocked by EarthLink should follow the prescribed subject line format (‘BLOCKED ’) when sending an email to blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net

It is preferable that the email to blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net is sent using the actual mail server being blocked, rather than EarthLink Support agents do it in behalf of the caller.

If they already sent an email to blockedbyearthlink@abuse.earthlink.net but did not follow the subject line format, they should re-include information in the prior email to the new email they will be sending. The previous email they sent was not kept by Abuse.

Don't know how Major it is since I've not lost a single mail

from the Earthlink POP3 servers, nor have any been late and even the spam count is the same as last week.

Most of the complaints were people not being able to reach Web Mail servers (»webmail.earthlink.net/ ) as all the POP3 servers (there are 8 on a round robin setup) worked fine for me the entire time including the last 3 days.

Same here. I didn't even know there was an issue until I came here and saw the front page news. My mailwasher program never chirpped an issue with pulling down my email.

Same here- for all of ELNKs many issues especially billing/customer service /tech support , email has been quite solid for me going on 10+ years with them but alas ELNKs days are number as my ISP because they continue to charge me for their highest tier DSL yet can barely support 1.5/384. They say that 1.2/308 is a best effort on a 8/0 768 provisioned line.

Doc....last month it was the POP folks like you and me that had 4 weeks of email hell. I guess it is only just that the webmail folks should have a few days of discomfort. I had no problems with sending or receiving from my ancient mindspring legacy account.

The reason you are unaware of it is because incoming messages are being dropped before they're even received. (see above re: "zombie/spam") If they don't put it anywhere in your mailbox(es), then you won't know it ever existed.

I don't send mail to earthlink/mindspring users very often, but the last one I sent (from gmail) was refused. Sent it again -- seconds later, and it was accepted just fine.

I posted my spam volume was the same as it was last week and I also have a 15+ email subscriptions of which none were dropped or lost. The subscriptions/list servs come all through the week because I signed up to stagger them so that I didn't get all of them to read on one day in the week and then have nothing for another week. I ever sent test emails using my Google email Account to all my EL email Accounts and the test emails were received by all 8 accounts within minutes. Don't know why you saw a Gmail failure, but I just retested with no issue as I did over the last 3 days.

Don't know why you think that I have spam controls even enabled on my EL Accounts as I don't. Both spam and scanning is disabled on all 8 of my Earthlink email Accounts.

I have 2 earthlink accounts, and with no explanation at all, in one of them I lost ALL of my emails from over 5 years of online webmail with Earthlink (okay so from this discussion it appears i am super stupid for having used an isp email account). Then today, I was told (by Chat) that Earthlink can not recover any of the emails. The other account, on the other hand, has had no problems whatsoever.

You should always back up your emails on to your PC just like any files that you want to keep.

Stupor

@comunitel.net
I lost a few incoming emails, but who cares. What hell is that compared to the fact that I lost ALL of my INBOX and FOLDERS. Earthlink said for a week to be "assured" that they would recover all the files. Then they said Friday that they will not be able to recover them. I did not have a backup... and neither did they. I looked and I don't see where EL says they will secure and back up your emails when using web mail. That is your responsibility to have a back up.
