Egyptian Government Restores Internet Access
As Mubarak Hopes Move Will Quell Protestors
by Karl Bode Wednesday 02-Feb-2011 tags: world · networking · consumers
After yesterday's speech by Mubarak in front of two million angry Egyptians promising that he would not stay in office past September, Egypt has given ISPs the green light to restore Internet access country wide. Originally intended to quell the popular uprising in the country, the move to eliminate a primary communications tool only acted to anger the public. The return of service appears to be a concession in an effort to restore things to something resembling normal, though it's still not entirely clear if the Egyptian people will be satisfied until Mubarak steps down immediately as violence continues in the streets. "Egyptian Internet providers returned to the Internet at 09:29:31 UTC (11:29 a.m. Cairo time)," notes a blog post by Net monitoring firm Renesys today.

What's the motive?

Why did the Mubarak regime turn the internet back on just in time for the attacks on the people?

Is it so the masses in other cities will see what is coming and fear it? Is it to anger/confuse them so that the people will be more amiable to the 'compromise' of appointing Suleiman being pushed by the Obama administration? Or did whomever is sitting on the routers decide to join the revolution?

Enjoy It While It Lasts

Because once the Muslim Brotherhood is in charge in Egypt, the media will be about as free as it is in Iran.

Yes, internet freedom & free speech won - FOR NOW. But in the long term, Egypt will just become another sink hole like Iran where a theocracy snuffs out any freedom and the Internet will be once again a closed platform.

Iran has slow, filtered, monitored internet...which allows for slow, unfiltered, unmonitored VPNs...

The Muslim Brotherhood is not supportive of extremist views. And they are but a fraction of the Egyptian political scene. They will not be in charge of Egypt.

Muslim does not equal terrorist or oppressive government. Do the KKK and Westboro Church represent Christian values? No. Nor is fair to broadly paint Muslims by the actions of terrorist extremist or dysfunctional theocracies.

And considering that part of what the Egyptians have been demonstrating for is more personal freedoms, I think it's more than reasonable to assume their new government will be secular / tolerant.

Sorry, I had to stop reading right there. Please go do some reading on the Muslim Brotherhood and what they support, and feel free to contribute.

Sorry, but everyone who has been interviews on the Brotherhood who actually knows WTF they're talking about has said that while yes, Al Queda founding members did get their start in the organization back in the 60's, they where all pushed out because of their extremist views.

So you think that their calls for jihad and the beheadings of those with whom they don't agree are not extremist. Interesting.

Their wikipedia entry covers their organization pretty well.

They've condemned the 9/11 attacks and terrorism. They advocate for the spread of Islam through nonviolent means. I would call that pretty unsupportive of extremist views.

I classify them as a religious political organization. Their American equivalent would be something like the Christian Coalition.

A tenet of faith of Muslim fundamentalists says the Koran tells them it is OK to lie to the infidel to advance their cause of having Islam takeover the world. Well, you just got lied to, no matter what is in their Wikipedia entry.

Huh? Is that a really high brow joke? Or something to do with walking like an Egyptian? That song has been in my head since this whole thing started incidentally.

Protesters

What the protesters are mad about is low cap high per gig overages from their ISP's. All Mubarak has to do is allow true unlimited internet access and he will be able to keep his job for another 30 years.

heh

"In other news the popular online social networking site Facebook went off line momentarily , as the Egyptian government allowed ISPs to resume traffic outside it's borders. The game Farmville had been a destination for many, but the calm quickly subsided as individuals realized that their overall scores had went down, demanding that Mubarak pay for the damages. "

No but seriously good luck guys (and girls).

it isn't going to help Mubarak.

They want him gone, plain and simple. As the rest of the world leaders are saying.. "step down".

They want true freedom.. I saw a sign on tv (watching CNN) where the sign said something like this

freedom to drive
freedom to live the way I want
freedom to choose

Americans have these choices why cant we?

A lot of signs of Mubarak get out and such.

The fastest way to produce a riot of young people...

Is to turn off their internet which REALLY pi$$es them off and THEN since they have nothing better to do with their newly flamed anger... they hit the streets (instead of just staying home and bitching on twitter and phacebook)

Nice one Mr dicktator

FAIL!!!
