Embarq 10Mbps
From the rumor mill...
Several users in our Embarq forum suggest that the Sprint spin-off will be unveiling a 10Mbps/896kbps speed tier in Las Vegas starting on September 17, with expanded deployment of the tier coming in early 2008. It looks like the price will be $64.95 when launched in Vegas, with a $10.00 discount if users bundle a qualifying voice package. Says one seemingly well-informed anonymous poster:
quote:
"10meg is definitely coming. It has been around in developer markets for some time as FTTC service. In some areas Embarq is only allowed to charge for the 768k when a customer has this service because there is no guarantee of the speed the customer is actually going to get -- although the maximum data rate to the home (medr) is off the scale."
We've contacted company representatives for comment and are waiting for a response. Earlier this month, Embarq, which is technically the fourth largest phone company, announced they'd be dipping their big toe into the IPTV market.

Sounds cool

I wonder how they'll advertise this one. They make good sales around here because of their price gurantee but of course AT&T no longer goes by contracts. 10mbps would be great competition against cable companies offering their upper 10mbps+ tiers.

Re: Sounds cool

Hopefully Cox will up their download/upload a bit so they can continue saying their service is faster than dsl in Vegas.

896 upload

The 896kps upload is so close yet so far. You can't really take full advantage of the 10Mbs download if the upload is less than one tenth the speed.

Thats not a sprint limit, its a ADSL technology limit.

10 Mbps

10 Mbps doesn't do any good when you can't even reach 1 mbps during the evening. Embarq really needs more bandwidth in north jersey. Packet loss and slow speeds get old.

What a Joke.. Fix What You already sell!!!

Embarq can not even support 5M/640K in many of their current areas of service!!! I hate to see how pathetic and terrible speeds and line quality gets when they start releasing this package!! During peak hours their service in my area and many others slows to 56K type speeds with pings in the 350-950ms range and lots of packet loss as well.

Instead of trying to sucker more people and sucker more money out of people they should worry about fixing what they already have/offer so it actually works correctly!!

They fully admitted to me the problem is over selling of bandwidth aka. not enough pipe to support the current users. So I wonder what they think is going to happen when these folks upgrade to the 10M package!?

I know a lot of people are having issues with not getting their advertised speed, but I get it and welcome faster speeds =)

Exactly! My service is fine and everyone that I know here who uses Embarq indicate that their service is satisfactory. Sorry for those who live in areas where Embarq may have problems, but that's not reason enough to hold those of us back whose service doesn't need to be "fixed".

10Mbps/896kbps

Wow...that's pathetic...absolutely pathetic....not even a full meg up?

In order to be getting those speeds, they must be using ADSL2.

I didn't realize that ADSL was just THAT sh*tty!

896k isn't an ADSL limitation; they could push around 3 meg up with ADSL2+...they simply chose 896k....for whatever reason; hopefully that'll get bumped up to 1024k when it's launched nationwide.

I live close enough to a RT to easily get 10 (or even 20) meg service, but it doesn't have a DSLAM...so, hopefully, when this package is launched nationwide, they'll already have (or will in the very near future) be deploying a DSLAM at my RT....10meg/900k would be really nice....

I really like the latest and greatest thing, but even then, I know your exact feelings; there's times when things weren't so advanced that choices were a lot simpler.

Actually this is not strictly true. In order to run 3 Mb up, the equipment must support Annex M, which the current modems do not. A firmware update might do it or it could be that the hardware is not capable of it at all. Then there's the DSLAMs as well. 896k is the approximate net speed you get from the maximum ADSL2+ 1024k connection.

My mistake.

I would certainly hope Embarq has been putting in ADSL2+M cards into their DSLAM....I can see the modems not being able to handle it, but that would only require a new modem; big deal.

The one silver lining about ADSL2+ and ADSL2+M is that it supports port bonding; therefore, we could theoretically see speeds around 96 meg down and 14 meg up if they wanted to...I highly doubt they'll do this though.

Re: pathetic

I'd pay $89 for 20/2, and have one of the fastest residential connections in this entire FiOS-free state.

But I doubt they'll do it any time soon either for several reasons, among which are: No competition at that level in virtually any of their territory, special customer equipment & pro install required, increased support headaches, increased more difficult maintenance, limited port availability, bandwidth hogs would be even more so ...

not to mention the fact that Embarq is very lacking on backhaul bandwidth.

I personally think what Embarq is attempting to do, as of now, is to light up as many RT's and CO's with DSL as quickly as possible so they can attain 100% coverage some time in late 2008-2009 (I'd think 2009). That way, they don't have to worry about "oh, this area can't get DSL" or "hey! No fair, we're the last town in Embarq territory to get DSL". Then, once that build-out is completely, hopefully they'll address their backhaul issue....if they don't...I don't see how they'll make it...

You want to see pathetic, 10/896 would be more than double the speed of Time Warner's highest tier in this county - in both directions.

Lesser of two evils

If Embarq provided 5/650 service to this area where I lived I would happily ditch Comcast's 8mbit, unreliable, and over-restricted service. I payed more when I was with Embarq and now I think I realize why. Even though I don't like telcos that much I must say that being able to use my connection as I see fit and it being there when I want to use it is well worth the extra money.

I was in an area that had some difficulties with the 5/640 upgrade but it was sorted out in a few days. Meanwhile, with Comcast I have an outage or two every month. It sucks to be here with them as the only broadband provider (I don't count satellite, bad DIRECWAY experience).

Re: Lesser of two evils

In this area with Embarq it was EVERY single evening. All peak usage hours would slow down to a crawl! Heck, the CO is right up the street from me too, I can't imagine how bad folks connections further away were!!! CHI & ROA hops were the problematic ones as well as the local once in a blue moon (due to a port going bad). The local Techs even had a fit over them raising this area to 5M because they said it couldn't support the 3M package as it was, rofl, I bet they are really getting peeved about this 10M package!!

We have Comcrap here as well, and in this area it is actually far more reliable and far faster then Embarq is.

Re: Lesser of two evils

I already have!!! Thankfully!! But I still have to deal with the BS for another 4-5mths yet. Out of all the folks I got to get Embarq service I have them all switched to Comcast now except for one who still has a bit left on their contract. So every outage I get to play Mr. Tech and tell them it is not their problem but Embarq's yet again for another evening, lol.
