Embarq 10Mbps in Vegas Early trials ahead of January '08 launch... Users in our Embarq forum state that Sprint spin-off Embarq unveiled a 10Mbps/896kbps speed tier in parts of Las Vegas yesterday for testing, with expanded deployment of the tier coming in January of 2008. Though Embarq isn't commenting on the tier, it appears the price is $64.95, with a $10.00 discount if users bundle a qualifying voice package. Claims one poster: "It has been around in developer markets for some time as FTTC service. In some areas actually embarq is only allowed to charge for the 768k when a customer has this service because there is no guarantee of the speed the customer is actually going to get, although the maximum data rate to the home (medr) is off the scale." Last week, USAToday profiled Embarq, and noted Embarq stock has risen 36% since they began trading as a separate company on May 4, 2006 -- among telecom operators, only AT&T has performed better.

| Good luck Unless they made some significant upgrades, very few customers will be able to get it. My community is 2 years old and the best they were able to provide me was 512k/128k. Period.
Embarq has good POTS service, and the DSL was good and reliable, but man was it slow. If they can provide 10m/896k it might be a winner.
In the meantime, I'm not switching from my 6.0m/512k COX service which works great and is blazing fast. And I'm not even close to their highest tier. | |
