KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In its first report as an independent company, Embarq Corp. said Thursday costs of its split from Sprint Nextel Corp. hurt second-quarter profits.
But the nation's fifth-largest telecommunications provider also said it saw healthy growth in the number of homes and businesses getting high-speed Internet service, and ultimately thrashed Wall Street expectations.
