Embarq, CenturyTel Complete Merger
Say hello to CenturyLink, sort of...
by Karl Bode Wednesday 15-Jul-2009 tags: business
Last month the understaffed FCC rushed through their approval of the CenturyTel and Embarq merger, attaching conditions that are largely meaningless. The two companies officially announced that the new merger is complete. The new company, dubbed CenturyLink will serve 7.5 million customers in 33 states, including 2.1 million broadband customers, and more than 440,000 video subscribers. Other than seeing the CenturyLink brand on your bills, little should change for customers of either company this year. Both companies still need shareholder approval, which they don't expect to finalize until May of 2010.

Click for full size
Both companies idea of "next-gen broadband" is ADSL2+ with few exceptions, and despite the merger rhetoric coming from the FCC, CenturyTel is actually lowering capex -- so you probably shouldn't expect significant upgrades any time soon. When CenturyTel acquired their last company, Madison River Communications, all of Madison's pricing structures were grandfathered -- meaning Embarq customers shouldn't have to deal with higher prices, for a while.

In other words, if you're either an Embarq or CenturyTel customer things won't be changing for a long while. Whether that's good or bad depends on your experience with each company. You can check out our reviews for Embarq here, and CenturyTel here. We'll of course keep all impacted customers up to date as things begin to change.

ADSL2

LOL, I knew we were screwed. Here in Vegas (aside from the very few that can obtain 10 Mbps DSL), it's either slow DSL, or a shite billing department with Cox.

Just so I can know, approximately how few is "very few"?

Re: ADSL2

According to a discussion I had with an Embarq engineer last week, less than 15% of the residential market in Vegas can obtain the top DSL tier.

If you're unfamiliar with the network in this city, the old Sprint wired it to hell and back with fiber. So unless Embarq starts throwing up RTs to improve coverage, the majority will remain without. I had hoped CenturyLink would be a great competitor to Cox, but based on Karl's statement that their next generation broadband is "ADSL2", my hope was just a fallacy.

It just goes to show that rural providers should be confined to rural areas.

Shareholder Approval

Shareholder approval was given by both companies late 2008, if I'm not mistaken.

Re: Shareholder Approval

The shareholder approval reference is for the new name, CenturyLink, which has not been voted on by shareholders yet.

I hope that don't approve that, the name is cheesy and the logo is lame.

I think Embarq had the best logo and brand recognition, they should just stick with that.

Re: Shareholder Approval

haha idk about brand recognition. If i tell people I have Embarq they say "huh? What's that?" and I have to explain the whole "spin off of sprint" thing.

440,000 video subscribers - misleading?

Some people might think these are IPTV/fiber subscribers.

In fact they are most likely Dish network bundle subscribers.

I think that video subscribers shouldn't count unless they are getting video delivered over the telco's infrastructure.

Lay-offs on the horizon

Two companies become one. And numerous departments get merged together, and all of a sudden there are too many redundant employees.
Welcome the lay-offs. Thousands of people will end up on the street without a job, further declining this miserable economy.

Re: Lay-offs on the horizon

I would expect any layoffs to be more white collar than blue collar. I don't believe the companies had any overlapping service areas therefore the number of required technicians shouldn't decrease too much. Management, CSR, and centralize network management OTHO may be a different story.

Re: Lay-offs on the horizon

Aside from the CO techs, everyone else in the new company will be affected.

Re: Lay-offs on the horizon

So, line techs will cover regions outside of their current geographic areas? I think you should be careful with the word "everyone".

Re: Lay-offs on the horizon

Sorry, I group Line techs in with CO techs. They both work out in the field, outside of the office/cubicle environment.
You know what I mean.

Be interesting if anything changes on the LEC side

Embarq is a PITA to work with for PICcing customers to our LD, rarely do they accept electronic and are pains to customers who want to self-PIC. Hopefully this will change... but I'm not holding my breath.

CenturyTel to CenturyLink name change.

"Both companies still need shareholder approval, which they don't expect to finalize until May of 2010."

Actually that sentence is a bit incorrect. There is only one company now. And the shareholder approval, expected in May 2010, is only to change the legal name of the corporate entity from CenturyTel to CenturyLink. (The timing of the brand name conversion for their customers will occur later this year.)
