| Re: Boring That is a valid point. Embarq was historically a rural telephone company, some of the areas they server are no longer rural (Las Vegas being the prime example), but the majority of the area is still in rural markets. So, the price may be a bit above average for 10 Meg, but when you start seeing companies offer these speeds in Gun Barrel Station* Texas it has got to be a good thing.
*I don't know whether or not the 10 Meg was released in Gun Barrel Station - I used it as an example of a rural town Embarq serves -- DSLr Mafia Member.

| That's not the argument I'm making. It's the argument we get sold about how these companies are making pseudo advances with widely available technology. It doesn't matter if its new to that respective market. The point stands how about some REAL BREAKTHROUGHS and not just the same old crap spat back 50 different ways. I read above time warner wants to do pay per byte. Seems while the ISPS in other countries (which we have more dense population than most of them too) are making progress, we're taking many steps backwards. This, is the point im making by my BORING topic. When we see something worth writing about, then we can change our tune. We being the people of America who would like ISPS to offer broadband comparable with that of the rest of the developed world seeing how tax payers give them all sorts of breaks at their expense. | |

I bet they are, but I'm just saying, we see a lot of stories that shouldn't be headlines. It's news, but it isn't anything noteworthy is all I'm saying. Obviously, Embark seems to think it is though, or it wouldn't have gotten PR all around and got written up here.

| I don't think I made such a bold statement, I spoke for everyone. Do you see anywhere in my writing where I said EVERYONE must feel this way? I don't see any such wording. The only broad wording is we the people of America who would like to see more speed. Hence, that's my personal opinion, notwithstanding. More or less, "the customers" and people of this same mindset wish for services they can brag about. IE. Stop offering the same ordinary stuff and pretending like it's big news. As I said, I am glad some areas are getting a minor speed boost. I recognize many areas are undeserved and any bit of fiber is better than none. Still wouldn't it be more worth the effort of these companies to bring out a service worth really bragging about? How about full duplex lines or fios like speeds to spar some competition. Maybe it's me but it just seems most companies are content with tossing a bone, but slowing wheeling it back in. IE enough to give the facade they care about future technologies, but not too much to actually mean it. | |

| Re: Boring Because a company like Embarq can't afford to fiber all of BFE? To you this seems like nothing of importance... to a person who lives in a town where your stop signs have clearly been fired at with a shotgun by a drunk redneck riding in the back of a truck 10 meg HSI is big news.
You seem to think that a company can just pull a thousand miles of fiber out of some sort of black hole and then have oompa loompas go run it free of charge. People in BFE are overjoyed to get some form of HSI, especially a 10 meg connection. I've got plenty of family member who would love to see something faster than 56k.
Getting a decent speed connection to everyone is far more important than having FIOS in a few big cities. Hooray for Bob the porn surfer who can download even more porn with a 100mbit connection. Our country would be better off if everyone was wired up with a decent speed. Wiring the entire country with fiber just won't happen. America has too many rural areas.

| Re: Boring Rain you obviously didn't read my post clearly. So you now your post got defensive and uptight, as a reuslt. First, I said we have cities where there are more dense populations than countries currently offering fiber. Where in my post did I say we MUST wire backwater Alaska or Rural America with fiber? A matter of fact, I made the statement towards big cities. If Embark is a small rural ISP, I stand corrected. It's a good jump. However, in terms of it still being newsworthy, it isn't. I am glad rural America is seeing fiber. Fiber does a lot to modernize a community. It entices businesses, which spur jobs and economic growth. My point here is if this country would invest in such an infrastructure, maybe it would change some stuff for the better. Sadly, this recycled news (be it good news for rural America) still doesn't add anything "technology revolutionary" to the game. | |

In most of NC, the cable product is Time Warner Road Runner. Their standard tier is $44.99 I believe and is 5Mbps/384Kbps. Their "Turbo" is 8Mbps/512Kbps and is $9.99 extra, so it's roughly $54/month.
An extra $10/month for 2Mbps down and almost 400Kbps up is a good deal if you're stuck in a Road Runner served area that hasn't upgraded speeds.

| Not always true either. RR is available here at 44.95 for 3000/384 or 54.95 for 5000/384, no faster available, with a lot more outages and much slower repair response time. Of course, lowly DSL making them look stupid may finally motivate them to upgrade the system here. Competition is good. Other Embarq advantages include no caps, no throttling, no port blocks, no rules against servers, a more positive attitude from their reps ... and as you imply, they cover areas with no cable.
Anyone who has Embarq DSL available and is not impressed with their cable internet owes it to themselves to give it a try. Nothing's perfect but it's the best choice where I am. -- The public is a poor business manager.

| Also, in most of Embarq's competitive markets, like central/northern florida and las vegas, the cable companies offer the 10Meg service for 64.99, with a $10 discount if you subscribe to digital cable service. I'd say Embarq has a highly competitive offer, considering the companies they are up against with these prices include Cox and Bright House Communications. | |

Embarq offers satellite through Dish, but what I was saying is that Embarq's offer is competitive because they are charging 64.95 for 10meg with a $10 discount if you have the 29.95 basic home phone package, which is very similar to Brighthouse/Cox's offer of 64.95 10 meg with a $10 discount if you have their digital cable service.

I can get the 10Mb/896k for 54.95/month. Charter is charging me 69.99 for 10/1 and does a lot of port blocking 'for my safety.' I had Embarq DSL a while back and was happy with the service. I went with charter for the 10/1 speed at the time. Looks like it's time go to back.

The cableco there is Charter. While they supposedly offer 10Mbps service here, everyone in town can tell you it doesn't matter what package you sign up for. They have a single DS3 that supports the entire county. During peak hours the network crawls at a snails pace. During non-peak hours you're lucky if you see 70% of your package speed.
