Re: naked dsl is not available for everybodyI pay Verizon $40/mo total for dry loop DSL here in NYC. I used to pay $65/mo total for DSL & a POTS I never used. since then I moved my POTS phone number to my Sprint Cell, and still enjoy great low latency 3mb aDSL from Verizon. I would have preferred using Cable for broadband, but the basic bundle prices here in NYC are insane, like $115/mo.

Re: Prices for naked DSLThose are what I was told were the prices. The 10.0 service has a limited coverage area. The only place I know that it is currently offered is in the Las Vegas area.

ProvisioningI think they might have a hard time trying to get a new line provisioned, if you don't have a local phone line from them.
I've thought about switching to DSL in my area, but I don't want the phone.
Do they offer 10mbit in 28590 yet?

Excuse meHow can you have DSL with out a phone line? This is what is absolutely silly about Naked DSL. As long as one has current on the copper wires between the central office to home one has phone service.

They simply don't route your voice data to the circuit so you can make/receive calls. What's silly is that for years DSL companies kept trying to make the public believe that naked DSL wasn't possible, that you had to have voice service ($$$) to get DSL.

It does not refer to DSL without a phone line. It refers to DSL without the mandatory phone service .

Uh, have you been hiding in a cave for the past three seven years?!?
Current in a copper pair indicates a working circuit port at the telco, not phone service. DSL signaling takes place on a totally separate frequency spectrum from traditional analog phone service, hence the ability of offering line share-based DSL service.
Verizon in NYC does it lazy-style by simply disabling the voice service features instead of provisioning a true data port to the CO.

Re: Excuse meactually, it is amazing they don't throw VoIP in yet. I guess when Verizon loses another million customers they'll finally start getting competitively creative.
|

Re: Excuse meThey're busy lobbying the FCC to bypass municipal franchise fees for FiOS.
They're also still impervious to the fact that POTS is still dying on the residential end.

Re: sprintYup - that's how AT&T is working on its 'naked' Uverse service here. I have AT&T Mobility (Wireless), AT&T POTS/LD and DSL through DSL-Extreme (over AT&T lines) and DirecTv. They've offered Uverse TV + Internet, but I'm under DTV contract. I've been offered packages (Internet 3Mbps or 6Mbps) with $50 rebates... however, AT&T recently removed the ability for me to even order or renew the 3Mbps package I've called and complained that all I want is Internet + VoIP or Internet + POTS/LD, or I'll take all my services and go to TimeWarner. Now they're offering me $30 for 3Mbps/1Mbps 'dry' Uverse or $40/month for 6Mbps/1Mbps dry Uverse. I'll wait until their VoIP pricing comes out, and my DSL-Extreme contract is up before I even think about it. Worst part is that my 3Mbps line (which is not offered any more, except on DSL-Extreme month 2 month), works VERY well, especially since AT&T's contractors fixed the lines around here.

Embarq has been a separate company from Sprint for about two years now.

Re: sprinttat doesnt mean the corporate mantra is not still there. The way people handle themselves and others proabably won't change. Think about the company's personality.
