Despite wishful thiking, Ericsson lab tests look promising...
(old news - 04:13PM Monday Nov 24 2008)
tags: business · wireless
John Cunliffe, Ericsson's CTO for Western Europe, shares his wishful thinking with Total Telecom (reg required), saying that he thinks 80% of global broadband customers will choose wireless connectivity over wired by the year 2013. In Cunliffe's head, the ease of installation will be the primary driver, given that traditional broadband is "a nightmare for both the consumer and the service provider." Obviously LTE's speeds could lure some wireline customers, particularly if Ericsson's lab tests translate into real world bandwidth:
Cunliffe said that over the last 12 months Ericsson has been running LTE tests in Sweden. These have taken place in urban environment, with clear line of sight between the cell tower and the device for less than 40% of the time, while moving at speeds of up to 45 kilometres per hour. "We recorded peak speeds of 154 Mbps, an average of 78 Mbps, and minimum speeds of around 16 Mbps," he said.
Cunliffe's eagerness to sell more handsets has him ignoring the fact that in many nations, wireless broadband service comes with incredibly low caps. Also, while Ericsson says they're on track to have commercially available network products by 2009, here in the States there won't be any networks to run the devices on (a small problem). Neither AT&T or Verizon, both of whom have made LTE their 4G flavor of choice, won't have LTE networks online anytime before late 2010.

Are you saying you have thousands of miles of wire that you drag behind you when you travel?

What about CAPS?

Great idea if subscribers are not limited to 5Gb Caps and the price is right. I am not holding my breath. Ericsson did not indicate how many subscribers a tower can support and still maintain high performance.

Re: What about CAPS?

I think it's a great idea if it can bring affordable broadband to those that can't get it now. If it offers low latency, respectable speeds, and solid security it might be just the thing we need.

Is $60 a month for a 5 GB cap a great deal? Hardly. Not to mention overage charges in the $250-$500 per GB range

Re: What about CAPS?

We really have no idea what kind of caps might be imposed on a future service that is years away from being widely implemented. Nor do we know anything at all about any overage charges or how the service will be packaged and sold. IF you read my comment, it was clear that I was merely speculating on the potential.

If this happened...

ISPs would actually have an argument about an Exaflood.

I think the title must have gotten cut off, let me correct the title for you Mr Cunliffe, "Ericsson Would Like 80% Of Broadband Users To Be Wireless By 2013".

The Oracle of BS

The Oracle of Delphi received her visions of the future by breathing vapor which originated deep in the earth. John Cunliffe the Oracle of BS receives his visions of that which will be by locking himself in a closet and breathing his own fart gas. We have also had similar prognostications from the Oracle of BPL. In the case of BPL who knows what noxious vapors are inhaled by their Oracle to get visions of the whichness of what will be.

p2p and multimedia

Wishful thinking for his bonus

Anything to do with P2P or multimedia will slaughter wireless internet and result in caps. Contention ratios determine who gets capital and a high stock price, and who goes bankrupt.

Not so much...

'...traditional broadband is "a nightmare for both the consumer and the service provider..."'

The "nightmares" may get the press--squeaky wheels and all, but the minor hassles of the typical install are hardly a headache. Wireless offers its own, unique nightmares & headaches.

To each his (or her) own.

The speeds better be faster than 50mbs

I have 50mbs now. There is no way I would consider going to wireless unless my speed was at least 40mbs. that's as low as I would consider.

Lay off whatever he is smoking.

This guy is off his meds. If he had said 80% of the NEW broadband users between now and 2013, I could MAYBE see it. But there is no way in 7734 that they will get that many people to switch. On top of that it would be virtually impossible for them to boost the capacity of all those towers enough to carry (say 3000?) users(per tower) at 20meg each(which by 2013 will probably be the "standard" broadband speed).

I'm wireless 50% of the time

Must conserve the bandwidth to about 200MB a day while mobile. I do all the heavy task at home or plugged in remotely somewhere.

Have to be a billionaire to afford the overuse charges

In Canada one gigabyte a month is considered taboo. Anything over that and you're looking at anywhere from 100 to 10,000,000 dollars in overuse charges. The internet is almost dead in this country. Most people have just given up or gone back to dial-up from America.

I hope wireless technology vastly improves.

I'd love to see fast/reliable/uncapped wireless broadband. Right now for home broadband, its generally cable vs. DSL. Which is basically a duopoly of sorts. It would cost too much for any new company to lay down cable to develop a wired infrastructure, so the only way to get competition would be through wireless internet.

I'm not sure if I think we'll see it by 2013, but I'm all for it, the more competition the better.

Packet loss

Yeah I will stick with my wire. Gamers will never leave their wire. Businesses will not leave their wire either. This guy is a joke. This has the same likely hood that by time of 2013 the sky is gonna turn into a dishwasher apple.

Cell Towers backbone

All of the towers have a fiber and/or copper backbone back to the ILEC central office. So his comment is moot. Fiber and copper will be around for a long time. The capacity of the towers depends on the size of the backbone feeding it.

Who cares.. really .. it is wishful thinking..

yeah well i will never be wireless .

sorry

but i dont need the security knowing i can call anyone at anytime for no important reason, simply just to annoy others and be unethically rude in my surroundings.

for business purporses... sure

for personal use ?

wait til you get home to call your grandmother or your best friend. im sure it doesnt need to be done on the bus, or while your walking, not looking around you and getting hit by a truck or oncoming pedestrians.

everytime i see someone walking towards me with their phone, i give them a nice bump with the shoulder.

not my problem, they arent paying attention while they are talking ..

most people have a hard time looking around them when they are in a supermarket or the mall WITHOUT a phone ...

why make it worse.

so again, no ... no phone for me.

if I needed a phone and wireless was my only choice, it wouldnt make sense, because i would just be leaving it at home anyway ... or having it with me but off.. unless its really important.. then i would first 1) find a private place with nobody around.. like maybe .. oh a phone BOOTH ! .. 2) make my call quick, because afterwall, i have better things to do while im OUT. ... 3) make the call worth it.
