And Incumbents to reap the profits
(old news - 09:54AM Tuesday Jun 27 2006)
tags: business · cable · content
Ex-AT&T Broadband CEO Leo Hindery lamented this week that portals were leeching money from ISPs and mega-corps (Disney, etc.), and that of AOL, eBay, Google, MSN, and Yahoo - four would either fold or be bought off. Of course despite the problems with Excite@Home, Hindery still sees a world where the incumbent ISPs (perhaps hand in hand with mega-partners like Disney or Time Warner) run and offer everything themselves: the portals, the content, and the VoIP, TV, and data services.

I can't even remember the last time I saw my ISP's portal page. I think I go there once in a blue moon when I need to log into webmail or get a tech on i-chat.

You log into your ISP's webmail?

I don't use mine. I'm not even sure I remember what it is. For pure personal use, I use my GMail and Yahoo Mail e-mail addresses exclusively.

I use my ISP's portal once every month: to pay my bill online.

Wha?

What fantasy-land does he live in? The "portals" offered by incumbents are inferior in every way to the companies that are "leeching" off of the ISPs. And, incidentally, how are they "leeching" anything if they're paying their dues as is proper?

He has absolutely no idea what he's even talking about.

Edit: Further, did he just insinuate that people or companies are not allowed to make money on the internet, other than ISPs?

Let me help you out a bit by doing some translating. English to Teleco/CableCo-speak

Leeching: The act of earning money without giving some to at least one (preferably many) large Teleco/CableCo company.

The hubris of some of these interweb companies to do this!

This was the best comment from the linked article that pretty much sums up the situation:

"This is not an unexpected stage of denial for the 'gatekeepers' of the communications industry. They have become so accustomed to their role of content provider that anything new and exciting is simply irrelevant. Even as it's clubbing them over the head and carrying off their client base into the inky darkness outside their ivory towers."

Portal?

WTF is a portal? Haven't seen Comcast's "portal" in a while now... Home page is set to my main email inbox on one browser, DSLReports - All Forums on the other browser.

Never got into the AOL-ish portal-to-internet thing... never needed it!
Even when I was on dialup, no portal was needed/used(Bay Area Internet Solutions dialup).
XP dialed and connected, then the dial window closed... What I did after that was my business.

Yeah, I've seen it before... but why does anyone use it? There is nothing there that I can't find elsewhere and no slow ass Flash page.
There is no reason(that I can think of) for anyone to use their ISP's portal.

Reeks of AOL users! Ya know? Must load AOL before you can get anywhere... I've never done that, let alone had to!

My ISP doesn't even have a portal. My homepage is the "My Yahoo!" page. Even then I go along my way, only after I briefly glance at the news articles.

We tell customers to use Google, Yahoo, MSN, any web page they want for their portal. Were a small ISP and spend our resources on things like a fast network that runs, not your horoscope and sports scores.

Oh please don't you remember being told by AT&T and every other baby bell telco that, that isn't what you're paying for? Really it's not. Seriously now, it's not. Why are you laughing? I'm not joking here cause that's not what it's for.

3rd party portals

Without "3rd party portals" providing content, there would be no interest in your internet. You should be paying them for making your service worth the $53's a month I spend on it..

Sometimes I hope they do try and do this crazy stuff, so we can all cancel our accounts (along with the rest of America) and watch them all go bankrupt.

Boy the stink stays (lingers) even after AT&T!?!

One would think that the evil stink of AT&T would not linger long, but I guess that kind of evil stink can last a long, long time. Me thinks former AT&T employees may wish to take two showers a day to rid them of the AT&T lasting impressions.

If it were not for Google, Yahoo, and ePrey, and many other large portals then no one would a) want broadband, and b) AT&T would be selling phone service only to the competing cable industry.

Is it me, or do too many mouths for large corporations spew nonsense?

eBay a portal?

uh, no...they are in a very different space than G, AOL, MSN, Y!, etc. That's like saying Amazon is a portal -- and to be fair, Amazon is actually closer than eBay to being a portal if only because of A9.

As for portals dying off: ain't gonna happen, especially since phone companies are incredibly inept when it comes to content -- why do you think most of them are partnered with Y! or MSN? Big cable companies are in a somewhat better position to pull eyeballs and money away from the "portal" companies, as are Big Content companies like Disney (Time Warner is a special situation given they have their hands in everything), but I don't think even they have much of a chance of doing it -- partnerships with existing portals make more sense.

Absolutely true. I've said it before and I'll say it again; the best "home page" is "about:blank". All 3 browsers I use open to a blank page.

No amount of flash intros or banner ads (blocked by my firewall anyway) are going to make me buy something I don't want. And I'm not cheating my ISP by using my DSL connection simply as a pipe and bypassing their "portal".

respect the power of the lobby

I am writing my congresscritters as well (as everyone should). I am, however, expecting the canned form letter response saying that he believes that this is the best for the "future" of American broadband (confirming what I already suspect).

Bottom line that the Big Telecom wants to ignore:
Both the portals and the end-users are already paying the telecoms for bandwidth. How is that stealing if it is already paid for??

Not surprised at all they would think this

I've been saying this for a long time now and especially since the first squeek from SBC on the double dipping on the internet pipes. (Remember the "Their my pipes, I paid for them" comment?)

ISPs have long sat back and ignored their customer base. In the beginning, all the wanted to or could do was provide internet access. Many of the incumbant portals suck or are weak at best. Yahoo, AOL, netscape, etc.. they have been ramping up their content for years.

The only incumbant provider that has done anything halfway descent with their portal has been comcast. I think they somewhat got it on the content path.

However, now they the incumbants have seen what these portals do, they want it all now. It's also most likely why they want this double dipping scheme they are cooking up. They want to be portals and content providers themselves (don't let them fool you, portals aren't dead, just "not our portals" will remain) incumbants will jacks up the fees to have the yahoo's and MSNs portals serve to the ISP's customers so that their own portals will survive while squeezing the others out.

To sum it up... the ISPs have sat on their hands all this time, let everyone else build what is the internet (different from internet access) and now that there is money out there to be made, they all want their part of it. Well? You snooze you loose. Telco and cable will mess it up and never get it right anyway. Ultimately they might squeeze the others out, but the only reason portals will or may die is becuase they will run off the good portals, mess up their own, and people would likely not visit any portal any more.

Would this happen? Not likely.. I can't see Yahoo! selling out, nor MSN. Not a surprising comment from an AT&T exec..

That's because they are created, managed, reviewed, and evaluated by people who think they have a captive audience and don't need to hustle to meet the competition.

Want to experience the off-line version of Hindrey's world? Go to any small town with a grocery store that has no competition within 40 miles. That grocery store is the off-line equivalent of the ISP portal Hindrey thinks (and wants and hopes) you should be forced to use.
