New free netbook deal, new bundle, speed offers...
05:08PM Friday Jun 19 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: competition · business · exclusive · telco · bundles · Verizon FIOS
Earlier this week we reported that Verizon appears cooking up a few changes to their FiOS broadband lineup, but the company wasn't ready to comment officially. No, there's no 100Mbps tier (yet), but Verizon does appear prepped to nudge the speeds of select, existing tiers upward.

Click for full size
In an announcement sent to the press this afternoon, Verizon says they'll be holding a webcast and conference call on Monday to unveil some new FiOSTV content, and "details on new incentives and enhancements for Verizon FiOS and high speed Internet services." The media alert also makes reference to "several new promotions and compelling broadband developments."

At least one of the announcements appears to be a free Compaq netbook for signing up for FiOS TV, judging from advertisements that have leaked out a little early. Leaked promo materials also confirm our previous report, and highlight 15/5Mbps (down/up), 25/15Mbps and 35/20Mbps tiers should be dropping on Monday. We'll of course have more on Monday when Verizon unleashes all of the juicy details officially.

Update: The upgrades are now official, and we have a follow up report here.

will you get that netbook like that free tv that people had

will you get that netbook like that free tv that people had a hard time getting.

Re: will you get that netbook like that free tv that people had

The notebook will be easily redeemable as it is provided via a coupon redeemed at HP. The caveat is as long as the notebooks are available, but that should be extensive.

Even if the notebook in question is not redeemable "much later" in the promotion, the $299 coupon will still be redeeable for other HP products.

Notebook

Let's hope the notebook promo will not be as problematic as the last one with those HDTVs.

existing customers get also get the netbook or the camcorder for free, but need to sign up for the new bundles. If you sign up for the new bundle then you can get the netbook for $99 + S/H + Tax

Only new customers will get the netbook for free.

I'd love to get in on this, but...

I'll be moving to Portland, OR in two weeks and have all ready called Verizon to get my account transferred up there.

Nope, FiOS stops two blocks from where I'll be living and according to Verizon, no prospect of them ever extending service to the neighborhood. Heck I can't even get my existing DSL service reestablished there, it's "Qwest country" or so I'm informed.

So I guess I'll be getting that fabulous ComCraptic service I keep reading about here on DSLR.

And for you folks that would say 'move two blocks over'... It's very difficult to move an existing house that's been already fully paid for, twenty-five years ago. The house was willed to me and I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Can't get Qwest DSL there (or maybe Comcast)?

In any case, Verizon is abandoning Oregon and Washington states within the next year anyway. So if one wants FiOS someday around here, make sure it's available NOW. I suspect that Frontier won't be expanding the FiOS boundaries much.

Yes, Qwest is the DSL provider in that part of Portland, but according to a phone call to Qwest and me talking to the owners of three nearby homes, 3/768 is the best I can hope for at this point in time.

Two of them are now ComCast customers after being suckered by Qwests' "highspeed DSL service". They had absolutely nothing nice to say about Qwest as a provider.

Damn that sucks man. That is just crazy. Just two blocks. I really wish the place I am moving to would be serviced by Verizon...but it's not. It's gay AT&T. So it's either lame slow problematic AT&T DSL or fast charter that I've had not such a great experience with in the past many years ago. Hope it's better now.

I never had any problems with the ATT DSL I had for 7 years. Now it is slow, the max I could get was 1.5mpbs. If your closer then maybe you can get 3 or 6 mpbs.

Yup. I know how you feel. Stops exactly that distance from me as well. Went to the top of the block and just stopped. They even had the gall to tag the area (that was in November and December) and mark it on the construction log for those months which they update monthly on their website, and not raise a single blade of grass.

Were I to be moving in the near future, broadband options at said address would be a priority item.

I'm sure with this housing market, there are houses just as nice as the one you bought within the footprint of the service you desire?

D-NY get special treatment..AGAIN

Just take a look at »Re: Any new Speed tiers?
You can't tell me that D-NY doesn't get exclusive deals compared to everyone else in FiOS areas. I'm sure the argument is that they are in "more competitive" areas but that's just not the full truth. Cablevision and FiOS compete in more areas than just D-NY and they arn't seeing the deals to make customers want to choose FiOS over Cablevision. The same can be said now for Comcast and FiOS in Philadelphia and its suberbs. If any region is "competitive" it would be inside of the backyards of both Cablevision and Comcast. This is where we should be seeing these special deals extended to and not just D-NY.

Of course it'd be ideal to just equally price and offer the same deals across the whole FiOS footprint but that's never been done by Verizon. The closest we've gotten to that is right now where every FiOS area gets the same tiers - even though some areas get them cheaper than others but at least they can still order them. Now they're about to change that and who knows how long it'll be, if ever, until we see it evenly offered again.

and?

So just speed bumps, and no price reductions?

15/5 @ $44.95/dual play, vs 15/2 $29.95/dual play price isn't all that competitive on price.

And, the other shoe to drop later this year when cablevision/time warner revises their tiered mbit rates & pricing. Don't hold your breath for TWC to offer anything good in response, but expect a flood of their customers calling to switch as FIOS deploys & notifications go out.

Singing "Hooray" here in the bronx NY

Wow that is pretty cool. I was on my way to staples this morning to get a netbook for myself but as an existing customer i get it for 99 bucks. I will take the 35/20 Tier which is a huge improvement over 20/5. man that will be better than Cablevision boost service but not as fast as the Ultra. No big deal the ultra is out of my budget range.

Re: Singing "Hooray" here in the bronx NY

I just called today to see if I can upgrade my current tier 20/20 to 50/20, I was informed that If I want to get 50/20 I will lose my bundle, currently paying 99 bucks for triple freedom w/ 20/20 internet. The rep told me that starting monday there is a new upgrade offers from $99 to $134. The only difference is the speed from 20/20 to 35/20. I did sign up for it and will be turned on monday. The rep did not mention about the netbook offer but I will try to ask monday...

Apparently locking in for 1 year give you a 2 year price lock..
I wonder if this encourages Cablevision to raise both prices and speeds.. because they could easily match 25/15 for an extra $3-5 a month and you'd still have the advantage of no POTS taxes/fees added on (aka your bottom line price)

Factor in about +$12 in taxes/fees for FIOS phone line. They sure could use VOIP right about now, which would make this deal quite good.
