Though I think I'd be happier to see AOL fold, watching Earthlink go down the tubes is pretty nice too. | | | | ELNK's service is not going down anytime soon. They have plenty of revenue from monthly subscribers, plenty of cash in bank, and are just making long overdue cost cuts they should've done several years ago. I worked at ELNK, still use ELNK DSL, and am not about to pay the Telco monopolies any more $$ for "installation fees".

| So what happens to their VoIP customers? said by "From the article:" :
Per inside source, some high level execs (including an Executive Vice President down to a Vice President) left the company this past week. Also, EarthLink is letting go of the following services: VOIP and Muni-Wifi. In addition to all of the support employees being let go, marketing will be completely gone and Operations will take a significant hit.
Maybe those customers will be 'sold' to Packet 8? Or, will they be 'teleblended' in with the post-SunRocket mess?
Thankfully, I'm not an Earthlink VoIP customer, but I am one of their cable subscribers. The biggest potential loss I see is that of my email address and a $3/mo price increase when I'm transitioned over to TWC's RR service.
I hope any displaced employees are able to find a new 'home' quickly...

1 edit | Death Watch It could not happen to a better company. It was a lousy business plan. The could have went the cheep dial up route for customers who do not want broadband or as a back up or gone into web and account hosting provide a email web host service independent of broadband providers. Instead Earthlink went on a campaign of intrusion on private telocs property and when the courts shot that down a la Brand X, Earthlink thought could make it on the government muni-wifi dole.

Telco property isnt private. just some areas they weren't granted access to.

Oh, they were my first DSL company, back in 2000. When the service went dead, Verizon never fixed it, and Earthlink couldn't do anything without Verizon. It was out for over a month before I moved to another place. Very good internet while it lasted, but a company that depends on its competitors is going to get screwed over.

| | Sic transit gloria ELN! I have seen the best and worst of times. Back in the 90's, I was ecstatic with ELN. Their customer support was brilliant and always gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling.
My last experience, a couple of years ago, was a slow painful journey through the dysfunctional bowels of hell! After every contact with ELN I found myself sitting at home in a cold rage, wishing the plague upon everyone at that sad excuse for an ISP.
So, I'll put a special bottle of bubbly in the fridge for the day they finally put this thing out of its misery for good!

bigunkGort, Klattu Birada Nikto join:2001-02-10 USA | Wow I remember when I first got on the 'net. It was with ELN. I was so hyped up about it, I insisted on going to ELNs headquarters to get my software and book. You needed a TCP stack in those days since windows didn't have one. They also were handing out static IPs. I walked into this little hallway of an office in Los Feliz, and was greeted by a guy who called himself Sky. Little did I know who he was. I heard the modems answering in a closet and asked if I could see the rig. He said no way, the higher-ups won't allow that. I heard a bit later they moved (or expanded) across the street so they could have a bit more room. Then came Sprint, etc. and they had a whole building in Pasadena, and so it went. I used to call a guy named Jay Vaughn for tech support. I heard it was he and Sky who started this thing with money they had when they sold a coffee house or something like that. -- There is not a man in the country that can't make a living for himself and family. | | Death of ELNK? I just lost my LPV line for the second time in a week and no one seems to be responsible or knows what the problem is. ELNK says its COVAD and trouble at the CO or in the line. Lets hope so and not COVAD pulling the plug on ELNK and cutting their losses as well. I hope that ELNK can find a way to stay in business because I shudder to have to be re-provisioned with some of the jackals in the SF Bay area who offer "High speed DSL (read 768/128)" for ONLY 99.00 a month. I also have a separate VOIP line for business needs so I'd lose my home phone my business line and my DSL if they belly up-Arghhh!!!

I haven't ever contemplated switching due to service issues, and as a TWC/Earthlink HSI customer, I'm not concerned about losing my internet connection for too long. If the ELink get their plug pulled, I would think TWC would activate my existing modem on their infrastructure (e.g. DHCP server) with a simple phone call.
