File transfers completed over a distance of 1 kilometer
(old news - 12:34PM Saturday Jul 31 2004)
tags: wireless
Using a high-gain antenna connected to a Class 1 Bluetooth adapter kit from Bluedriving.com, three men set out to see if they could connect to a Class 3 cell phone and attempt to transfer a file over the air at an extreme range of 1 kilometer or about about 3,300 feet. The test was conducted placing a laptop at the highest accessible point in the region and a cellphone located within visual line of sight. They were able to copy three files from a Sony-Ericsson T610 during the test at the targeted range of 1 kilometer, when a bluetooth cell phone device was not thought to have enough power to travel distances greater than a few dozen feet. Full details of the experiment, which they claim is a new world record, can be found at Wi-Fi Toys.

Re: -->

FCC could get all over that. Don't forget the ignorant people who think this exposure to the radiowaves are dangerous.

I mean think of all the people that could get lukemea or some other disease.

Ack!, research & actual balanced understanding ... too much effort! Much better just to spew half-baked, sweeping opinions that condemn such tiresome things as research and admission of grey-area unknowns or nebulous "risk factors". Haven't you heard the intellectual period is over? It's all about "keeping it real", baby! Life's too short for the big questions. ;^)

So theoretically...

Someone on a city street in a van could have a laptop and point a high gain antenna (connected to bluetooth) at a bunch of pedestrians with cell phones, and leave files or virii on their phones?

What was the File Size?

I am not sure I see the practicality of this yet. How big
were the files that were transferred? I didn't see that on their website.
