FCC Announces White Space Broadband Testing
Interference Database Testing Begins This Month
by Karl Bode Thursday 15-Sep-2011 tags: fcc · wireless · alternatives · wireless
Just about a year ago the FCC approved new White Space broadband rules governing the use of unlicensed spectrum, largely freed by the shift to digital television, for a new form of broadband with the potential for significant rural reach. This week the FCC announced that they'll soon be testing the database system they've created that will allow devices to check for nearby interference. These databases will be run by several companies including Google, and the FCC says their testing of this new system will occur between September 19 and November 2. The FCC has published their database test facility here, which users will be able to poke and prod for accuracy and other issues.

what's the point?

when the FCC takes away channesl 31-51 and gives them to at&t and verizon there won't be any white spaces left.

The devices do not check for interference

The WSD must connect to a database and determine its location before transmitting. Any conflicts with licensed users in the database will prevent the device from operating. This should be interesting.

Rural broadband is the only app for this technology that makes any sense to me. It won't work in major markets.

Which is just fine because those are the areas that need it. Many rural areas still only have dialup. Major markets, while maybe lacking serious competition, at least typically have at least 2 broadband providers available. It can't become available soon enough, in my opinion.
