All other spectrum blocks have met their reserve prices

The FCC spectrum auction is slowing down although trickling bids continue to push the total closer to the $20 billion amount that would double the FCC’s original minimum. Recent movement in the auction has primarily been in the E-block which met its reserve price earlier this week. This leaves only one section of the spectrum that’s still not getting any attention. The D-block (known better as the public safety portion of the spectrum) continues to remain inactive after receiving only one bid early in the auction.

Key lawmakers predict that this portion of the spectrum will fail to meet the reserve bid price established by the FCC. This failure hinders the “construction of a nationwide, next-generation, interoperable broadband network for public safety” which many feel is a serious need lacking in our country today. FCC Chief Kevin Martin has stated that there are not yet plans for development of this network should the D-block fail to sell.

What more proof you need to show that noone is interested?

It seems that no one cares(in the corporate world) to try and help others...

]Why should they? The gov't really needs charity? They're already taking in hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of billions in taxes. They don't need anyone's charity.

dude...you think we run the US on hundreds of billions? Must be the new math...but you are off by at least a couple orders of magnitude....try 100's of TRILLIONS in taxes when you total all collected taxes.

Ummm.. 100's of trillions is greater than the entire world's GDP. Bush's new budget calls for $3 trillion.

There WAS a guy all lined up and waiting - Frontline.

EVERYBODY figured they would be the one that would bid, win and team up to build out the network. NOBODY else was willing to bid as the industry figured it was a setup, with Frontline sure to win (all though, they'd still need to meet the minimum bid). Frontine was all ready working behind the scenes with the PSST (Public Safety Spectrum Trust - the 'overseers' of the D block).

Uh-Oh - right before the auction was to start, Frontline closed the doors and went out of business because they couldn't raise the cash to bid (probably couldn't raise the FCC deposit money). That caught EVERYONE off guard - industry, the FCC, everybody. Since there was nobody READY to bid on D-block, the spectrum got one feeble bid in the opening rounds (30% of minimum) and nothing else.

The FCC knew it was screwed the second Frontline folded but it was too late to do anything about it. After the auction is over, the rules will be tweaked, new cages will be rattled, more back room deals will close and there will be a NEW AUCTION, with the same basic commercial+public safety sharing agreement that WILL be successful and D-band will slowly be built into "some sort" of PS-friendly sharing network covering 90%+ of the US population.

My long term guess is that PUBLIC SAFETY themselves will baulk at using it...

Public 'Safety' ???????

The very 'concept' that the safety of our citizens should be for sale to the highest bidder is insane.

Re: Public 'Safety' ???????

Insane maybe, but business as usual. Outsourced public safety services are very common. Even at the Federal level. Can you say "airport security"? "Halliburton"?

No, it doesn't. But nobody cares enough to do anything about it.

Congress cares and if no one is willing to acquire the Block D license and agree to build the public safety network in either Auction 73 or 76 then expect members of Congress to at least lay the groundwork for a solution before election day.

Re: Public 'Safety' ???????

Congress says they care. As everyone knows, what they say and what they do is often diametrically opposed, especially when the saying and doing are separated by election day.

Maybe they can install cameras on every corener and have "viewing centers" in Pancott? I am sure it would be perfect. Afterall they seem to be trusted with our personal financial/ID data.

Buy Nextel's IDEN Network

The government should have long ago done this. It's probably not worth the trouble now that Spring has mangled it.

Agreed ! That's what it was designed as to begin with - a giant trunking system.

A ready made, high quality nationwide network for 1st responders. Hell, a large number of them already use it !!
