FCC Begins H Block Spectrum Auction, Dish First in Line
The FCC is set to launch the agency's first major spectrum auction in six years tomorrow, as the commission begins to sell off a single 10 MHz block of 1900 MHz PCS airwaves known as the "H Block." Sprint and T-Mobile have previously stated they won't be participating in the auction in order to focus on other upcoming auctions. Ergen and Dish are expected to be the prime suitor for the spectrum, and should offer up the $1.56 billion reserve bid price. Dish has been collecting spectrum for the possibility of building their own LTE network, or just selling it down the road at a premium.

sprint and tmobile want/ need different spectrum not afraid of bidding war

Not afraid of Ergen just not spectrum they need or want. Why risk buying this spectrum then when good stuff comes around government saying you have too much.

Use it or lose it

This needs to be set as standard, that if they don't use it in full within 5 years, they lose it, or have to pay a large penalty. We have enough spectrum squatting going on with AT&T and Verizon.

Dish is already subject to this, and got an extension because the FCC realized that their deadline was too severe relative to the cost and timeline required ot buld a nework from scratch. Having spectrum though makes Dish Network a major takeover target. They can even choose to sell spectrum to fatten up Dish Network's wallet and acquisition capability.

Fact or more hyperbole; Is it 3G or 4G?

"Dish has been collecting spectrum for the possibility of building their own LTE network, or just selling it down the road at a premium."

Boo! Hyperbole is used as a scare tactic to dissuade a potential buyer or investor, and sometimes it is as slick as a 4-color stock prospective when used to promote "your" brand. LTE, by any name, is only good as the sum of its parts. If you want to know more about what LTE actually is and what it can do it practical application should read what 3GPP and ITU states on the subject.

"LTE is 3G. The LTE Advanced standard formally satisfies the ITU-R requirements to be considered IMT-Advanced. And to differentiate LTE Advanced and WiMAX-Advanced from current 4G technologies, ITU has defined them as "True 4G".

It may eventually be wonderful for global travelers. It still does little for rural telecommunication - unless one uses a cellphone which is hit and miss, anyway. If one currently lives in a dead zone the only types of communications that might work is POTS, CB (limited distance) or Ham radio.

In the end we really do not know how DISH, Sprint, or any of the others will actually use their spectrum until it is competed and in practical use. In the meantime we can read and listen to the excited utterances better called hyperbole. Boo!
