First oversight hearing for newly stocked agency

Enjoy watching politicians unhinged from reality discussing sophisticated technical issues they know absolutely nothing about? Fancy lawmakers who repeat talking points pre-written by massive telecom conglomerates without bothering with independent thought? Bizarre, off topic references to political pet projects your cup of tea? CSPAN is offering a live broadcast stream of the "new" FCC's first Congressional oversight hearing before the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, with a general goal of contributing absolutely nothing of value to the agency's uncooked national broadband plan.

Bring the video to it's knees!

The site is extremely speedy, I'm shocked. I think it would make a good point if we brought the site to it's knees however.

So far, it's a bunch of circle-jerking and "things are great!"

Televised hearings are designed to do one thing - get the congresscriiters face on TV to fool the voters back home in to thinking they actually do something.

I am starting to agree with that. The guy from my state went into a DTV tirade and the guy from Tennessee just went into one about diversity of media ownership.

I want to hear speeds

Basic needs to 5Mb/1Mb
Standard needs to be 30Mb/10Mb
Advanced needs to be 100 Mb/50 Mb
I'm referring to Cable/Fiber as DSL as far as I'm concerned will not cut it going forward

Why do I get the feeling every thing that Genachowski will say is a lie? or half truth? and nothing will change

Yeah, he's smiling and saying everything is fine while reading his boilerplate.

Pull Back the Veil...

As someone who has worked up there...

The Representatives don't know anything.

Their staff is overworked, most don't know anything, and most have no desire to stay. They are all looking at their $30,000 salaries, then thinking how they can get a $200,000 job working for the industries they are supposed to oversee.

The questions that are asked are almost always written by some lobbyist who works for some company, who sends it to the staffer, who passes it on to the Representative to ask (without telling them who wrote it).

Most Representatives are not paying attention to what is being said. They make opening statements, then leave. If they stay, they play w/ their blackberry.

The room is full of lobbyists. Even for a low-profile hearing, the companies hire homeless DC bums to stand in line for them early in the morning. Afterwords, the lobbyists stand around and yuck it up with the staff.

The reporters who cover these things hate them. Rarely is there any news made.

Your republic is run by 24 year olds, all eyeing a bigger paycheck.

Re: Pull Back the Veil...

That's probably the most accurate description I've seen yet.

The sad thing is, I feel most Americans know this and are simply disgusted that there isn't really anything that can be done about it.

The sad part is that these 24 year olds, who came to DC right out of college, haven't been out in the real world yet. So, they are guided by their imaginations rather than by real life experience.

That's the only reason "network neutrality" -- which is to the Internet what the "fairness doctrine" is to TV and radio -- has gained any traction at all on the Hill.

man

I wish they were given at least 300 billion for the network How are you going to control the bandwidth flow of millions of homes. This is going to be ridiculous.

This is not the actual broadband stimulus, only the portion of the funds from the general stimulus package that is dedicated to broadband.

Re: man

Now how is our nation going to fund the bandwidth for everyone in the country?

apparently not according to the industry, unless they are allowed to:

have caps
do deep packet inspection
favor their content over other content
give favorable treatment to content that pays a "premium"
decide which applications can or cannot be used

the industry apparently just isn't making enough money to properly upgrade infrastructure

Re: man

Caps are inevitable IMO. The pendulum is already swinging that way. DPI has useful purposes and will not be going away either IMO. I don't believe you'll see it in the nefarious manner that you're alluding to. I don't believe you'll see content preference for fear of unleashing the net neutrality nannies. Which applications can or cannot be used? I'm not sure what you're getting at...unless you're drumming up the iPhone argument again.

That's not what I stated. The question was how's our nation going to pay for bandwidth for everyone to use, not if the infrastructure is being properly upgraded or the ISPs are making sufficient money. There's a difference.

Re: man

Actually you're incorrect. If anything the pendulum is swinging the other way. As you hear about more and more national broadband plans being implemented (for example Australia and now New Zealand), you come to realize politicians are starting to wake up about just how much of their nation's resources are being wasted allowing giant corporations dominate a market that has utterly failed to deliver on its promises.

America's a unique case. There's a higher concentration of Republican loons here than in the Middle East.

Re: man

Considering that you and nasadude See Profile appear to live in the US, that's relative to my previous point. Political affiliation has nothing to do with this discussion, especially considering we have a Democratic congress and president now and the pendulum is still swinging. Nice irrelevant political jab though.

I think what they should of done is pay our broadband bills.
