FCC Commissioner Clyburn Meets Reddit, Doesn't Have Much Fun
Commissioner Mignon Clyburn's staff decided to have the FCC member do an "AMA" on Reddit this week, and the end result wasn't particularly impressive. Reddit users were largely annoyed that Clyburn dodged questions or responded to many inquiries with ambiguous PR speak, making it one of the worst AMA's since Woody Harrelson ignored meaningful conversation to blindly promote his film Rampart. Complained one Redditor:
quote:
This AMA looks to me like a political stunt to say something along the lines of, "Yeah, I went on that interweb thing and talked to the American people! We had discussions about everything from Net Neutrality to Eminem!". However, I haven't seen one solid, thought out answer to any of the big questions here. The majority of your replies, Ms. Clyburn, seem to me to be rushed, half-assed, and quite vague.
Clyburn specifically floated above and around the lack of competition in the broadband sector, something Redditors (and most consumers) clearly want addressed with more than lip service. It's a shame, given that Clyburn's actually one of the more consumer friendly members of the Commission, though she learned the hard way that the unwillingness to directly tackle issues like the lack of competition only works with the weak-kneed press and in the office halls of the FCC.
