FCC Doles Out $1.7 Billion For Rural Broadband Thursday Apr 30 2015 08:14 EDT The FCC has announced that the agency will be doling out another $1.7 billion in broadband-specific subsidies in order to expand and improve broadband in rural markets where "market forces alone cannot support deployment." According to the FCC, carriers in these markets have 120 days to determine if they'll take the assistance, which requires they offer speeds of at least 10 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up (even though the general FCC definition of broadband is now 25 Mbps) to 40% of funded locations by the end 2017, 60% by end of 2018, and 100% by the end of 2020. |
