U.S. telecommunications regulators handed a victory to SBC Communications Inc. and other phone companies, allowing them to raise the rates they charge high-speed Internet operators to use their networks.
The Federal Communications Commission's 4-0 vote Friday lets SBC and Verizon Communications Inc. compete more effectively with cable companies that dominate the $15.6 billion market for fast Internet service.
Consumer groups criticized the decision which will take effect after a one-year transition saying it will reduce consumer choices by driving independent Internet service providers out of the market and result in higher prices.
