Contracts between cable TV operators and apartment building operators that limit competition were banned Wednesday by an order of the Federal Communications Commission.
The order was welcomed by AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc., the nation's two largest telecommunications companies that are upgrading their phone networks to offer video. The order was also applauded by RCN Corp., which offers competitive video service in some parts of Chicago.
The National Cable & Telecommunications Association suggested that the order could be challenged in court and could result in higher rates for some apartment dwellers.
