Can FTC release news without disclosing itself as source?
(old news - 02:07PM Sunday Jul 13 2008)

Questions have been raised about the choice that the Federal Trade Commission recently made to reformat a press release about the upcoming DTV transition so that it could be released as a news article. The press release was originally posted as a consumer news alert on the FTC website. It was then pushed to nationwide community newspapers to be printed as a story with no indication that the release came from the FTC. The FTC maintains that there is nothing wrong with this practice but journalists have expressed concerns about the ethics of this when coming from an organization that has a responsibility to be cracking down on deceptive advertising.

sort of like a staged press conference

and as I recall, that didn't make folks too happy, either.

I don't know what it is with the Federal government these days, but it looks like a few ethics courses are in order across the board.

Uh...the Editors will take care of sourcing

Editors of those newspapers site the sources of the new items all the time (eg Reuters, AP, etc).

All the FTC did was make the job easy for the editors to report and not tie up rewrite on the news release. Newspapers are always cutting back on staff and the FTC isn't doing something hundreds of organizations don't already do - and that is feeding ready made copy to the news organizations.

I'm in total agreement with you. I fail to see the ethical lapse here. News outlets tell you who the story came from - why is this any different?

What Do You Expect?

If one of the Bush Nazis is in charge there are no ethical controls in either the person or the programs. Just the sheer lust for unbridled power and the desire to foist their sick portrayal of our Republic on the unsuspecting public. It is time for the tortured souls of our Founding Fathers to rise up and smite the ungodly.
