Facetime on New iPad Won't Support LTE
Your Wallet Will Probably Thank You
by Karl Bode Thursday 15-Mar-2012 tags: prices · competition · business · alternatives · bandwidth · consumers · AT&T · LTE
Despite the significantly faster network speed, capacity and latency, The Verge has confirmed that there will not be LTE support for the new iPad's Facetime service, which will continue to require that users log into a Wi-Fi network to use it. It's a little silly since as the website notes, Verizon is allowing the new device to be used as a mobile hotspot at no additional cost, meaning you could make a Wi-Fi to LTE Facetime call using your iPhone and iPad:

Click for full size
In other words, you could easily initiate a Wi-Fi hotspot from your new Verizon LTE iPad and use it to successfully make a FaceTime call from an iPhone — likely with little to no degradation in video quality as compared to a Wi-Fi connection, since LTE is so fast. More to the point, using the device as a Wi-Fi hotspot seems just as likely to rack up data as a FaceTime call, which has been estimated to use around 3MB per minute.

This is of course a carrier-imposed restriction, likely due to two factors. One, a concern about too much network load too quickly (think iPhone on AT&T circa 2009) when backhaul in many markets still isn't in place. Two, a concern that users will burn through their caps too quickly, generating a lot of negative publicity highlighting rather severe limitations -- on a supposedly next-generation service.

With AT&T and Verizon charging users $10 per gigabyte you'd be right in thinking the companies are eager to start raking in the cash, but rushing too quickly toward the overage gold mine could raise regulator hackles. The FCC has made a lot of (mostly empty) noise about tackling wireless "bill shock," and a bunch of iPad owners having to take out second mortgages simply so they can video chat won't look particularly good when it comes to marketing either LTE or the low cap, high overage pricing model.

Some data

according to this article usage is in the range of 3 Megabytes/minute.

So if you used Facetime to a high degree, say 60 minutes/day every day for a month, that would be about 5.5 Gigabytes.

Or a more reasonable example, 15 minutes every other day, would be about 700 megabytes of usage.

Another way to look at this is that at $10/GB (the standard marginal price point for both AT&T and Verizon), you can Facetime for 5 1/2 hours, so the effective cost is about 3 cents a minute. Really not bad at all, considering it's a full on video calling service.

Bottom line: like any other video streaming, light usage is not an issue with data plans. But if you try to watch for an hour every day you're going to be bumping up against your plan limits.

Re: Some data

Is this really a problem? Now that Verizon has the iPhone, my area is covered with them. No one, and I literally mean no one I know uses Facetime. Sure, the first couple weeks it was gimicky. It might be a little more common from the iPad rather than the iPhone, but still. Who cares?

Re: Some data

This. There are very few people who actually use FaceTime or any other video chat service on their phones. Despite the tech media's insistence that this would be "revolutionary," it's turned out to be, "meh." The same fate probably awaits Siri and other voice control apps. They're just not practical to use in many situations.

But Skype video calls work WiFi & 3G/LTE

I don't see what they gain here. Use Skype for iPad app for video calls and you can use that on either WiFi or 3G/LTE. All Apple would do by giving in to the carriers on not allowing LTE FaceTime is to drive business to a competitor product.

if you jailbreak, and use an unrestrictor, you can use facetime over 3g, and its pretty good.

This shows how ridiculous the data caps/pricing is...

Things could go one of two ways:

1) Apple enables FaceTime over LTE and the blowback hits Apple for "bill shock"...

2) Apple enables FaceTime over LTE and the blowback hits the carriers for outrageous Data Pricing/Caps

I'm inclined to believe that the latter is much more likely to happen, especially if Sprint were to roll out an Unlimited Data offering....

Now that would be something.

However, it's clear that Apple doesn't want to be anywhere near this landmine...

Perhaps this is the carrot/stick to get the carriers to drop their data pricing....

Re: This shows how ridiculous the data caps/pricing is...

Don't expect them to drop prices in this reality. Perhaps they will increase the data caps at a similar cost, but I would not expect them to offer cheaper alternatives.

You might get more for your money, but your bill won't be any lower each month. This will be the same for the new family data plans that might some day be available.

If sprint were to have a unlimited data on their iPad, I might bite. But I wonder if they are going to have wimax or LTE iPads with sprint.

thats if sprint decides to keep it unlimited. But already noted their service isn't completely "unlimited" as they claim. there is a user on here that was mailed a notice for using the Wimax too much on the Sprint side.

Reasons why I don't need a tablet with a 4G/3G modems

I'm getting the new ipad tomorrow and I choose the wifi only version
95% of the time tablets are used in places where wifi already exists and should I need internet access, I'll just wifi tether to my 4G phone that still has unlimited data.

Who needs the extra bills both the $130 for the LTE modem in the ipad and the bills from carrier. The kind of bandwidth a tablet can use makes using them with one of the current tiered data plans is just too expensive to be worth it.

Re: Reasons why I don't need a tablet with a 4G/3G modems

from what I understand, at&t version plans are prepaid so might be useful in situations where u forget to take mi-fi with you or it discharges. Or if u have currently non-lte hotspot and don't wanna upgrade.

but verizon is the tricker here. They only allow regular post-paid month-month plans with activation fees. They want you to pay more for privilege of nation's largest 4G LTE network.

Re: Reasons why I don't need a tablet with a 4G/3G modems

True enough in that case AT&T's version is more useful, it just wasn't worth it for an extra $130 to me, even with the wifi version I spent more than I wanted to, glad I didn't get the verizon lte version I considered getting it thinking I could have used it pre-paid like the AT&T versions have always worked but I choose more internal stored over the 4G modem.

Re: Reasons why I don't need a tablet with a 4G/3G modems

I'm getting my WiFi only version tomorrow as well.

The only place I've been where I didn't have access to some sort of WiFi is when I'm at work (I use the company's network on my desktop) or when I was at the lake.

When I was at the lake, I didn't want it anyway. I wanted to drink Coronoa's and hit the lake with my friends & family.

I could see wanting to download a book or something (this is my first iPad). Even most of the bars & restaurants up the lake have WiFi now, so you could just go have a drink and download it there....

But if you tether your unlimited phone won't there still be a cap?? I currently tether my Verizon unlimited phone to my iPad and I pay 20.00 per month for a separate 2GB for the iPad or any device I choose within Verizon specifications. Unless you are jail broken?

I have grandfathered unlimited tethering, granted tethering doesn't work for all, but for me I'd rather stick with the one bill and not pay $130 for a lte modem I'll never use.

Ahhhh, with Verizon or AT&T? I have the 3G & wifi model with verizon as a gift and then decided to save $$$ by tethering. Only 10.00 but better than nothing.

Weird

I saw Skype on my friend's DROID RAZR MAXX on Verizon 4G LTE, and it was literally better quality than a phone call on AT&T or Sprint, much less Verizon.

Jailbreak?

Not that I give a crap about the iPad or anything Apple related, but to get around this, couldn’t you just jailbreak and install that app from Cydia that fools your phone into thinking it’s connected to wifi rather than a cellular connection? That’s what I did when I was a fool and had the iPhone so I could stream YouTube in higher quality when I was on 3G. I also used that app to get around the 10MB app file size restriction over cellular data from the App Store.

Re: Jailbreak?

yes, and I still do this. I can also tether without getting caught on a prepaid plan because the carrier cannot differentiate between data from the phone and a connected device. They can only guess by excessive usage based on a month over month and month to month comparison from last year(if you have had service that long). if you keep your data usage high, the carrier has no idea what you are doing.

More Proof that LTE is Useless

Ahhh... the wonderful world of high speed wireless broadband... except that if you use any of it you get charged out the rear end if you do it.

That just makes any form of capped LTE too expensive to be practical for people like us.
