Fairpoint Hires New Marketing FirmsWill try to untarnish Fairpoint brand 12:24PM Friday Nov 27 2009 by Karl Bodetags: dsl · business · telco · Fairpoint CommunicationsFairpoint Communications is currently in bankruptcy after a year of offering sub-par service to customers, missing deployment deadlines, being delisted by the NYSE, and angering regulators, customers, unions and investors. They haven't had enough money to pay what they owe small business customers, but they have had enough money to still engage in anti-competitive lobbying. They also apparently have enough to hire a new public relations firm. According to the Associated Press, the bankrupt carrier has hired two new firms to market the Fairpoint brand -- an uphill battle given the company's very public implosion: FairPoint needs to win the public's confidence after bungling the technical aspects of the network handover from Verizon, leaving many customers frustrated with dropped calls, billing errors and slow action on service orders. Trementozzi said he hoped advertising would be geared "to reassure the public that they're a viable company here to do business and capable of handling products and services to the consumer." Of course Fairpoint has to market their products -- one just hopes that marketing doesn't trump actual network and customer support improvements. In a recent hearing before regulators, Fairpoint CEO David Hauser gave a speech that blamed some of Fairpoint's problems on "bloggers" and public perception. But short of a brand change, marketers will have a hard time clearing New England customer minds of what the Fairpoint brand stands for. Offering service that actually works and support reps who answer the phone would go a long way toward getting back on track. It would go considerably further than new ad campaigns designed to pretend the last year didn't happen. Meanwhile, the more money spent on marketing, the less money being spent on making things actually work. Related:- Verizon/Fairpoint Deal a Lose-Lose Scenario For Consumers

| Fail Wouldn't the best sort of marketing be, um... actually spending the money they have to um, make things work right?
Its funny, Fairpoint has all this cash to waste on marketing and none to spend on actually running their business and they wonder why they are failing?
Maybe bankruptcy filings should be for Chapter 7, not 11. -- Blagojevich / Madoff 2012!

| Re: Fail They are just doing what they have learned from the free markets. You know, the bankers that stole TRILLIONS of dollars, yet get a bailout. Why, because the banking industry has very good lobbyist. The key to success in the US is not a good product, but good lobbying. -- The happiest countries are the most secular. | Re: Fail said by karlmarx :They are just doing what they have learned from the free markets. Which is most likely resulting in numerous people canceling Fairpoint service because they can find alternate service from someone else.

The article summary explains that Fairpoint is great at lobbying, but clearly these activities are not translating into success. -- Blagojevich / Madoff 2012!

Better idea, Fairpoint needs to learn how to resell Wildblue. They should get a custom Fairpoint branded puke colored modem from Via Sat.

| Makes perfect sense I'm no fan of Fairpoint, but marketing costs less than network upgrades, and is designed to increase revenues exponentially over the amount spent. Therefore, spending on marketing is usually a good idea, as long as the increased revenues are spent wisely. Clearly a big if, however. -- Jay: What the @#$% is the internet??? | |

| Re: Makes perfect sense It is exactly that type of thinking (short term) that got our economy into the situation it is in. Over a couple of year period marketing can get a company a lot of profits, but marketing something that they cannot provide will only cost them more business (long term). Roughly speaking companies have been living paycheck to paycheck(not investing) rather than planning ahead. | |

1 edit | Re: Makes perfect sense So what really happens if this company totally bombs and can't get out of bankruptcy? I don't understand how bankruptcy works but I assume another company might take over, but what if not? Do we loose everything and head back to the 1800's with no service t all?
Sorry if I seem nieve, I am when it comes to bankruptcy.

| Re: Makes perfect sense Assuming they cannot get out of bankruptcy, either they will be sold off or the creditors would try to run it. Usually this means that they will be sold off. It may mean the creditors have to take a large enough loss to make the assets cheap enough for someone to buy them. | |

| but they can fund Xmas parade TV? Wonder where they got the $10,000 they gave to Intown Manchester so the city's Xmas parade (that Intown manchester puts on for the city) could be televised on NH's Ch 9?
I know they gave $$$ last year too (know people who work for Intown) and it took months for them to come thru with it all.
