·Fairpoint Communic..
| Hope their fios keeps working Just got FIOS from fairpoint installed a couple of weeks ago. Speeds are great (30/15) for about $70 bucks a month, and no caps, no throttles, no limits. Even though it was a fairpoint tech who installed it, all the equipment still says verizon. They will wire up anyone who has the fiber running already, but they are not going to expand the fios footprint, or so I've been told. That's a losing strategy, becuase EVERYONE here who can get FIOS, is getting fios and dumping comcast like the Venereal Disease they are.
NO CAPS! Speed ALWAYS exactly as promised (3.7MB/sec down, 1.8MB/sec up, thats BYTES, not bits), very stable. NO THROTTLING OF torrents or newsgroups or anything. NO COMPLAINTS that I've already downloaded 1.4TB in about 2 weeks.
Compare that to Comcast: Let's see.. 250GB cap, the $15.00 for every 10GB overage.. Hmm.. I'll probably pull about 2TB this month, so that would cost me.. about $2700.00 for comcast, or about $70.00 for FIOS. Do the math. -- The happiest countries are the most secular. You can't say EVERYONE is leaving Comcast. Their will be people to stay and enough to make them stay there.
Not everyone wants FiOS even if its provided by the cities. Comcast works just fine for people and some people are afraid of change you know. Especially the older generation.

They are providing high speed internet in VERY rural areas. Giving these people something they would otherwise not have access to. My mother who lives in a town of less than 500 people has 3mbps dsl service at a reasonable price.

Karl's "news" (more like "ill-informed opinions" a lot of the time gleaned from a "news" blog) is often colored with crap. Justin's opinions are more colored with Dingo crap. They just a hatin'. I find it hilarious a blatant ad for MagicJack shows up but the bashing of big corporations continues. By the way, MagicJack has no magic; it just sucks. I tried it. Another gimmick. Their website is an infomercial. I wonder who Karl will bash when Vonage goes under? MagicJack article was by KathernV, not Karl, she (?) copy+pastes AP and PR Newswire articles with no thought.

All articles by the AP are copyrighted and if the article is reposted by any means without permission you bet AP will be holding their hands out for $$$$. Then we can read Karl's rant about that and how its unfair.

| Too Soon to Tell Too Soon to Tell
While I am concerned about the FairPoint sale I think it is way too soon to tell if they will succeed or not.
They promised to increased the DSL footprint in rural - hopefully they will deliver.
In the short term they are not expanding Fiber. One hopes after the transition simmers down and they deliver on DSL to rural areas they will adopt the same forward thinking strategy as Verizon and rapidly roll out fiber rather then investing in copper plant. They need to do that or Cablecos will eat their lunch. I'm sure they are aware clock is ticking.
As the the $16 million a month they are paying Verizon I have to assume that is at least partially offset by saving because the reason they are paying the fee is because their operation is not yet up and running.
So far I've been happy with the transition. My DSL speed was doubled from what I had with Verizon. Realize that is a small thing but at least for me so far result of sale has been positive.

| VT will never be an E-State! I notice none of the previous responders are from the state in question, Vermont. As a long time sufferer let me just say ANY form of DSL would be an improvement over the State's idea of broadband, i.e. Wireless from Great Auk Wireless. It averages 10-20% packet loss and is useless for VOIP or streaming video and for that service you pay about the same cost as satellite - $500 for installation & equipment and $50/month for 740 up and 250 down. They are carpetbaggers at best. DSL would be a GREAT improvement!!! | |

@tds.net | DSL from Fairpoint Well I'm still waiting for high speed internet to get to me in southern NH. My dial-up disconnects about every 10 seconds. I've tried phoning them and have not yet been able to reach a human being. When will it happen?

| Re: DSL from Fairpoint I will probably hate myself in a week for saying this but...
I have used fairpoint DSL for years and have been happy with it. Vonage with ease, heavy duty home network with high usage.
I suspect VZ built up Vermont's network and never rolled out most of the DSL. Fairpoint will roll out what they find in the COLOs and good luck to them!!
I would hate to be making money on a dialup ISP in Vermont at this point. High speed is arriving and not just from the terrain challenged wireless....
