Status update from Verizon...
(old news - 04:45PM Wednesday Oct 31 2007)
tags: Fiber · business · telco · stats · Verizon FIOS
The folks at Verizon have offered up a status report on FiOS deployment in a post over at their policy blog. According to the company, FiOS now passes (not serves) 8.5 million homes and businesses -- and they hope to pass 18 million homes, or half the homes Verizon serves, by 2010. The company says they've installed more than 457 million feet of fiber in parts of 16 states.

During the third quarter, Verizon added 202,000 FiOS customers to bring their FiOS total to 1.3 million. Of course, the flip side of that coin is that Verizon DSL growth is slowing. Gone are the quarters where Verizon added 600,000 DSL subscribers at a pop -- last quarter Verizon added just 56,000 DSL customers, which reflects a change in priorities as well as an overall slowdown in the market.

no joke. i've been waiting for 2+ yrs now... and they keep saying "your town is slated for install, but we can't say when"

grrrrrr.....

on an aside, this past month, Comcast ended a promo-period rate i had for broadband, because i now am.. and i quote "In a Verizon FiOS Service Area"

this is not true, and was confirmed by Verizon, as they haven't run the fiber yet.... but... what business is it of Comcast's?

/off topic.

You've been waiting 2 years? I've been waiting since 2002 or 2003 when they were still in the planning stages. Luckily for me they went live here last month, and my install date is set for 11/20. You'll get it eventually, don't worry.

There's not even any deployment in sight for me, yet I'm right in an area where it would probably sell. They may be cherry picking, but not around here.

When Verizon started deploying FIOS in NH they started in towns with economic potential (of course) and also where ready access to long distance backbone fiber existed.

Installing FIOS is not just a matter of wiring up the area they also need to connect to the backbone.

I assume decision to deploy FIOS is a complex mix of business, engineering and manpower planning.

Re: Move Faster!!

Out here in the Boonies this area is supposed to eventually get FiOS, But no idea of when, At least this area can't be sold off like Maine, As Barstow CA is too important for their West Coast to East Coast operations to sell off.

Be happy you do not live in New England: Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine. Assuming Verizon sale to FairPoint goes through we are all promised next generation DSL broadband over the next decade or so.

No kidding. Would love to have it in my area already.

Not that I don't know it's kind of a big job. It took government funding and help to create the original telephone infrastructure. Perhaps something similar would be called for in this case.

2010

2010 sounds about right when it will reach my neck of the woods..

Kinda sad that Chicago doesn't have any competition what-so-ever.

I think every MAJOR U.S city should have competition..and being that Chicago has major hubs going to it for the net, it shouldn't be that hard..

Re: 2010

just because a major inter backbone runs through a city doesn't mean it is easy to share to the end users. from what i know, the problem in getting the high speed lines the end user is more in the cost of deploying and upgrading the last few miles, not necessarily the pipe from a central office to a internet back bone. sure it is easier to make the pipe from the central office to the internet backbone bigger since you only need to run a few cables and a long trench. the other side may require many many seperate cables and man-hours to deploy a new infrastructure along new equipment. it becomes a lot easier if you can make use of the existing infrastructure, but old wiring has its limits.

Yes it does. There are Comcast vs. RCN areas, and there are Comcast vs. WOW areas. Plus AT&T mixed throughout.

Re: 2010

You call that competition...The Death Star or Comcrap with Wide Open thrown into the mix...geez.
ATT has their small radius for DSL but they offer it to everyone else at no guaranteed speeds. Comcrap is hit and miss depending on which block you live on. And WOW, along with Comcrap, has signal or lack of, issues. Plus they're heading into the digital turnover blind. WOW will probably be sold again within a year.

What a F*****g choice!

I don't know where you get your misinformation from, but ok. And what is a "digital turnover blind"?

WOW will probably be sold again within a year.
Unlikely, but what difference does it make if one investment firm transfers assets over to another like what happened a year ago. Nothing changed.

What a F*****g choice!

RCN is not in the same areas as Comcast As with Wow..only At+t is mixed in with Comcast.

WoW cable internet is basically a joke anyway.

You've never used the service, how would you even know. I've had them for over 6 years now and they are way better than AT&T or Comcast.

Re: 2010

If they are mixed in with Comcast its probably most of the business side of Chicago and not where MOST people live.

I know this is for RCN as i saw a network map of RCN, How would you even know anyway? You live 2 states away.

Because I know people who used to live there and a few that do, and have had the service. Both companies are overbuilders. They only service areas where there already is a cable company.

According to RCN they serve Chicago's lakefront, including Lincoln Park, Lake View, Gold Coast, Streeterville, Hyde Park, Rogers Park and more.

WOW has service in the following areas, Arlington Heights, Calumet City, Chicago City - S. Side, Chicago Heights, Crestwood, Des Plaines, Dupage County, Elgin, Glen Ellyn, Glendale Heights, Glenview, Mount Prospect, Naperville, Oak Forest, Palos Park, Prospect Heights, Robbins, Schaumburg, South Holland, Streamwood.

Why don't they say "86,000 miles of fiber" instead? I think that sounds more impressive, even though it's a smaller number.

Circumvent means to avoid or bypass. How about circumnavigate? Or circumambulate, that's always a good one.

Re: pass/serve

The difference between passed and served is that passed means Fios is available to a house and they haven't taken it, and served means it's available to them and they've taken it.

If it was even available where I lived, I'd jump in a minute.

"Passed" means just that...there is a facility in the street, that "passes" in front of a premise.
"Served" means a paying customer is connected.

The latter "Served" is the number of Beers that have been handed to you this evening,

The prior is a function of how many Beers that have been handed to you, before the point that you "Passed" out.

Just wondering who needs more than 5Mbps. Are you doing P2P, hi def video streaming?

I dumped my 5Mbps cable for 1Mbps EVDO and don't really miss even 5 unless trying to stream hq video.

54 feet

That comes to only 54 feet of fiber per home passed. They really are sticking to high density only. If your frontage PLUS the distance from your house to the curb is over 54 feet, you're too rural to get it yet.

This is like saying your unit is 12cm big.

Fiber is measured in route miles, not route feet. Comcast is claiming 126K route miles in the US (or 665 million feet of fiber) »/r0/download/1···ast1.jpg

Re: They past right by my town without stopping.

They installed in a few selected spots, mainly new construction and a very few hilltop estates and then moved on. Probably just so that they could claim coverage in our zip code. I haven't seen a FIOS truck here in 6 or 8 months. It really surprised me because when I lived in Chino Verizon came through the town like an invading army. When they got to Hemet they did like 1% or less and were gone.

Just signed up for FIOS this afternoon. They will be out next week to install it. I had assumed I was in an area that would be passed by until the very end, glad I was wrong. I've been checking to see if it was available every couple of months for a couple of years now.

They are really funny about how they select areas to cover and who they decide to bypass. When I lived in Chino I learned my tract was to be bypassed. A call to the mayor got me a contact at Verizon who explained to me that our homeowners association had blocked their efforts. I found this amusing and told them so, and proceeded to explain that I was the president of the association and that this was the first we'd heard of it. Three months later they were laying fiber in our middle class tract. We weren't alone. From what I could tell it appeared that they bypassed some of the poorer more heavily minority neighborhoods. I'm assuming that they don't think that there's any money in Hemet, which is just nuts.
