Media Manager now free for all DVR/Broadband customers...

Verizon this week announced that they've expanded the availability of multimedia and DVR management functionality to more FiOS customers. The carrier says they're now making remote DVR management by phone and PC-to-TV functionality available to all DVR customers -- something that was previously only available to customers who took the company's multi-room DVR package. According to the Verizon press release, the functionality is now free to all DVR customers who also subscribe to FiOS Internet service.

A bit confusing..

To have the multimedia DVR you are still paying a premium to watch DVR recordings on others sets. The Music and PC streaming portion are now free.

Re: A bit confusing..

Multi-Room DVR = $19.99/mo
Regular DVR = $15.99/mo

So you're paying a $4/mo premium to enable the non-DVR boxes within your house to view the recorded shows on your DVR.

What stinks is that the features are somewhat limited. If you have an HDTV on your Multi-Room DVR and an SDTV in another room you have a choice--
1) Never be able to watch anything recorded in HD on the SDTV
2) Pay an add'l $4/mo for an HD box for your SDTV (which will downscale the HD shows to SD)
3) Record anything you might want to watch in the other room in SD, which may mean setting up recordings for both SD and HD unless you are OK with watching SD stuff on your HDTV?

They need to enable the QIP2500's, or whatever the lower end box is, to downscale from HD to SD

Re: A bit confusing..

Hi,
I swapped out my SD Box for a HD box no extra fee. I am not sure if that was a one time "Deal"
The 7xxx series box will play HD on a SD (Down converted?) The older Qip 2500 SD box I would get an error stating that it was in HD and cannot play.

No, that wasn't a one-time deal. Customers in NY and Northern NJ get the HD STBs for less than everyone else. You pay $6/month for the HD STB and we pay $10.

now if only the DVRs had more then 120GB

I have the multi-room DVR, signed up for the remote management a few months ago--it's flaky at best and often does not work at all--this is with an unaltered installation from VZ, the only thing I did was disable wifi on the router--I'm sure there are hours of technical support scripts I could walk through on the phone w/ VZ but the feature just doesn't mean that much to me.

The lack of S P A C E on their DVRs is much more concerning to me...

I also think this statement from the release is a bit over the top for no reason:

Once again, Verizon FiOS is delivering what cable can only dream of," Strickland said

Strickland is clearly hoping that the average person does not know that Dish/DirectTV offer this, or the independent DVR providers, or that AT&T U-Verse even has an iPhone app to allow this....... but oh wait, he said CABLE specifically so that he wouldn't be sued, ok

Re: now if only the DVRs had more then 120GB

The router is not involved in multi-room DVR functionality, so nothing you can do to the router would affect performance.

Hi,
Technically speaking .It does. You need MOCA and I just reverted back from my Linksys wireless N from being primary modem back to the "Actiontec" because it would not work via the web.

Re: now if only the DVRs had more then 120GB

Yeah, the router is involved... it has to forward (or at least allow) packets to get to the STB's.

That's why you can't have this functionality (or guide, or vod) if you enable the ethernet port on your ONT and leave the actiontec out of the loop completely or behind another router w/o specifically allowing port forwards.

I've tried to use the web remote of the DVR a handful of times in the past month, all failed to work at all or failed to execute commands (i.e. would let me see the DVR recordings but delete would not work, new schedule would not work, etc)... one in five times it would be OK.

As of last night it could not communicate w/ my DVR at all...

...this morning I tried it again, working just fine... so like I said, it's a crap shoot, at least for me :-/

Maybe they've substantially improved the back end now that they're launching for all DVRs, so perhaps I will see better service?

That's what I originally thought too, but my experience has been different. I've got the Actiontec dumbed down to just be an Ethernet-WiFi-MoCA bridge, and the whole thing sits behind a Linux firewall, which then connects to FiOS via Ethernet. I signed up for Remote DVR and IT WORKS!!

I ran a sniffer on the Linux box and I see a lot of outbound connections from the DVR to an outside address on port 443. Perhaps in the past (or maybe on older models?) they were using UPnP for inbound access, but it appears that they now build an SSL VPN of some sort in order to punch through subscribers' firewalls.

your confusing the remote scheduling feature (web/cell phone) with mult-room viewing. remote-dvr DOES require the use of the router, but the MULTI-ROOM functionality does not require a router.

the MOCA network exists between the STBs involved and that functionality is handled directly between the STBs involved - no router needed. of course without a router/moca-ethernet bridge setting your dvr recordings.

Re: now if only the DVRs had more then 120GB

I'm not confusing the two--I was speaking entirely about remote DVR in regards to port forwarding/etc

I understand that the router is not involved for multi-room DVR, I didn't mean to give the impression that I was referring to MR-DVR.

MR-DVR works just fine, except for my complaints about the QIP2500 not being able to play HD content scaled to SD

So frustrating.....

I really hate living in a town where I do not get the choice to use FiOS.

Hell I only get one choice where I live. Comcrap.

Move on up to Stoneham, Massachusetts...

We've got RCN, Comcast and FIOS all available -- 3G speeds on all networks are great too...

We even have a liquor store in the center of town that makes home deliveries

Linux software?

This is great! I've got the DVR, and I don't need the multi-room functionality, but I've always wanted Media Manager. Now it looks like I'm going to get it for no additional charge. Kudos to Verizon for adding functionality to an already great system.

My computers all run Linux, though (except for one, which is a Mac). Media Manager appears to be Windows-only. Are there any efforts in progress, either by Verizon or by hobbyist developers, to make this thing work with Linux?

(If not, I may need to get out the old protocol analyzer and reverse engineer this thing myself.)
