FiOS Finally Coming To Philly
City unanimously approves citywide franchise

Comcast recently managed to delay Verizon's deployment of FiOS in their home town of Philadelphia by complaining to the Philly city council about issues the cable giant likely cares nothing about -- namely that Verizon's entry into the city market wouldn't lower cable TV prices, and that the telco would cherry pick the most profitable customers. In the end however, Comcast only wound up delaying approval a couple of months -- the city this week unanimously approving a Philly FioS franchise. Verizon says some people in Philly will get FiOS this year, but full citywide deployment will take seven years.

Comcast didn't lose. All this means is that Comcast simply didn't offer a bribe that was high enough.

Four Score And Seven Years From Now

Philadelphia will have FIOS, maybe. The corrupt City Council and the neophyte mayor Nutter with his cronies will be fleecing Verizon before, during, and after the Fios installation takes place.

Little Nicky Scarfo was the head of the mob in Philly and when he went to jail I think City Council and the mayor took over. The jails are filled with former mayor John Street's friends and business associates. Street's brother Milton was caught and tried by the feds. State senator Vince Fumo is in the fight of his life trying to stay out of jail. City Councilman Kelly's top aide is on trial today also. And there is a lot more.

FIOS in Philly, maybe, maybe not.

finally some direct competition

competition may be bad for business but its usually good for the consumer. I admit there is corruption in philly. But just because there is does not mean there are no good people (unsung hereos) who are fighting back. Being cinical is easy.

Caps

You know what I find funny..Comcast still employs caps on their Docsis 3 speed tiers.

AND their the same cap on the less speedy tiers (250GB/month)

I honestly see FiOS winning in the long run for 2 reasons, 1.) Its FTTH 2.) NO CAPS (as of yet) and right now..their speed tiers are above ANYTHING Comcast has atm 20/20 anyone?

And again, the increase in speed does not have anything to do with how much you download. If I D/L 200 gigs a month, how is getting it faster going to make a difference in the amount?

SEVEN years?

I know it's a big city and all, but doesn't that seem a bit long?
Heck in 2016, I expect to have the Internets beamed directly in into our brains, along with our flying cars!

2 years * 3.5 mafia factor

Seriously though, Verizon will be rolling out 100/20 fiber, you just watch...the Obama ISP bailout will give them a tax break if they do...

Obama bailout....with that logic, the dialup companies like NetZero should get a bailout since they are losing customers and market share.

The bailout is BS, plain and simple.

Sorry, all sports will be on CN8

That's the Comcast-owned channel used for sports overflow in case Comcast Sportsnet was already used. Supposedly went defunct at the end of the year. (Don't know if it's still on in Philly, I have FiOS.)

Wouldn't it be a nice payback if Comcast moved all it's sports coverage to a channel not carried by FiOS? I wouldn't put it past Comcast to do something like this.

Hope Verizon got a good contract to make sure this doesn't happen.

Fios and tru2way , tivo etc

If Fios was around i would switch, but i wouldnt switch if they didnt support tivo. Verizon needs to jump on the tru2 bandwagon as well. Otherwise, it not going to be as attractive.

Re: Fios and tru2way , tivo etc

FiOS supports CableCARD, which support the Series3 line of TiVo.

TiVo has no Tru2Way products released to the public yet, and the status of development is a big unknown.

I have no problem with my Series3 right now with CableCARD. Works just fine.

Comcast should be a bit nervous...

Now that their nemesis on the HSI front had the gates to the castle opened for them, Comcast had best start coming up with some interesting customer retention packages or one hell of a marketing campaign...

I can see it now..."Everytime FIOS is installed in a new home a cuddly kitten is killed. Stay with Comcast, we won't kill that kitten".

Verizon should under-price philly. So to get maximum subs, even if they did just in center city. 10meg symmetric would be bad either.

flawed strategy

If Comcast thinks they the'll just force customers who use more than 250gb per month off on their competition so that they make less money.. they may be right.. but what Comcast doesn't know is that Verizon is prepared to spend Comcast under the table more than 5x what Comcast is actually worth and has credit for another 5x when it comes to last mile ISP. The big question is whether those customers begin telling their friends who use under 250gb that the service is much better with Verizon than Comcast.

Even Time Warner is biting their nails but following the lead of Comcast in expanding caps to other markets.. They even had a nice push poll on CNN wondering whether consumers would really ditch their cable-tv service and utilize internet based media only?

Just to make it seem more unpalatable they say, on a computer monitor as if it's the old clunky CRT's of the past. Hah! Video data can go anywhere these days, from a 1" portable media player to a HD 60" plasma screen (provided the source is of HD divx/h264 quality & resolution and of a decent bitrate).

Shun evil.

Comcast is pure evil and must be cast into the lake that burns with fire.
