FiOS Hits Brooklyn Canarsie, Mill Basin, Georgetown & Bergen Beach... Tuesday Aug 21 2007 09:02 EDT Initially, Verizon struggled with offering FiOS in urban multiple dwelling units (MDU). This year, though, they have refined their installations and are making apartments a primary focus. Verizon has announced that their FiOS service has launched in Brooklyn, NY. More specifically, from the announcement: quote: Verizon, the company that is building the nation's most advanced digital, fiber-optic network straight to customers' homes and businesses, announced that its ultra-fast FiOS Internet service is now available to customers in parts of Brooklyn's Canarsie, Mill Basin, Georgetown and Bergen Beach communities. The service is also available in several buildings in Williamsburg and downtown Brooklyn.
As an aside, this thread in our forums shows FiOSTV users are having relatively good fortune getting TiVoHD units and CableCARDs installed. |

I don't know Brooklyn well but I assume most of those locations are apartment buildings? Gives alot of hope then for Manhattan one of these days.

Re: Just a matter of timeNope, this area is mostly private, albeit, row houses. There are some apartment buildings, but most of them are housing projects.

Hey I thought Verizon was cherry picking, the cable industry said so.

Re: Just a matter of timesaid by lesopp:Hey I thought Verizon was cherry picking, the cable industry said so. They are. So now instead of redlining NYC, they are redlining in each borough, so probably they can now get a TV franchise from NYC, they have service in all 5 boroughs.

Corning's new bendable fiber might come in handy hereThat is if they get it into production and Verizon buys into it. It would be perfect for making the kind of tight turns needed to hook up apartment complexes.

Brooklyn's in the House!Go Brooklyn! Yes, I was born and raised there. Fortunately, I grew up, got married and relocated as I wanted my child to have a better life.

Every time I see that intro to Welcome Back Kotter, it reminds me of High School, because I went to HS near Lafayette HS, which is pictured, at John Dewey HS, and know the neighborhood shown in the intro, like the back of my hand.

It must bring back some great old memories for you..especially to have it captured on film in such a way. Where ever we move onto in life..it's those years which are the foundation of our life. Take care.

DisgustHe guys.. Lets take the tax breaks to build out our network.. Then we are going to cherry pick.
Everyone telco does this.. we apparently need legislation.
And before the anti government folks chime in.
I only believe in legislation when the company/monopoly is abusing there power / customers. Ie cherry picking

Re: Fughedaboudit!lol yeah that was in my mind too. Coincidently, the guy who plays "Paulie Walnuts" lives around here. Wonder if he's looking forward to FiOs too?

A Sopranos ending? No surprise, the rich white (people, what's left 'em) row houses of Brooklyn are cherry picked first..
Maybe the lowest hanging casabas in Queens have been picked clean. Also, as the price of copper rises.. no doubt there may be a rise in cooper harvesting.. That's good, cause Queens needs all that copper to supply power lines..
In other news, check your mailboxes for the 2-year Cablevision $29.95 each, triple play deal to make it's debut. New and improved, also available to current customers (QOS may get better... or not)

Don't even have DSL in Bensonhurst yet.I've been waiting for DSL to come to my area for years. I finally gave up and got optimum instead. And yes I live in an apartment building. I guess I won't see seeing that guy with the 'light' in the truck for a few years. Thanks Verizon.

Re: Don't even have DSL in Bensonhurst yet.Interesting
My friend lives near the northern boundary of Bensonhurst and claims that DSL is available. Just plugged in the phone number on the "consumer DSL" page and got the same results.
Must be some overlap neighborhood boundary thing...

Re: Don't even have DSL in Bensonhurst yet.Yeah, apparently, when I put in my phone # or my parents place 3 blocks away in the consumer DSL page, it says that it is not available.

Re: NOooooosaid by Rick5:did you unpack yet? Maybe you can just turn around and head back. BTW..who is the cable operator in brooklyn? TW...or OOL? Both? South Brooklyn has cablevision while north brooklyn has time warner. It's not exactly a 50/50 split. Those few apartment buildings downtown are most likely time warner while those other neighborhoods are cablevision.

Downtown Brooklyn? Most of the project there don't have dialup! They should target Gravesend, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay!

Re: Downtown Brooklyn?said by Zverina:Most of the project there don't have dialup! They should target Gravesend, Midwood, Sheepshead Bay! But you see the neighborhoods that you mentioned have so many MDUs while Mill Basin, Bergen Beach, etc are mainly private houses. The difference with the few downtown locations is that those are for the most part probably brand new buildings with million dollar apartments and building management that knows what fios is and that their tenants will all want it. I live in Midwood in a 72 unit MDU right near the CO that is the 1st CO in Brooklyn to offer fios but realistically if it was available to my MDU I'd be surprised if 10% of the tenants would switch to it.

Re: Downtown Brooklyn? The reference to Downtown Brooklyn is for Concord Village apartments. Look like the projects at first glance but landscaped better and missing a NYCHA sign, plus its a coop so its residents aren't animals and probably would quickly be ejected if they were. Used to live in CanarsieIts hard to imagine why Canarsie at first glance; Canarsie was one of the better neighborhoods in Brooklyn 20 years ago.
But its really easy to figure out here why verizon here. Its an all out assault on cablevision. Cablevision is a easy target to take on.
Cablevision which will eventually bite the dust. Verizon has really gone after this small regional provider. Canarsie has a lot of family homes and MDU's...it also is one of the poorer areas of Brooklyn, so no one can accuse Verizon of cherry picking.
Again the Cherry picking with Verizon has always been rural communities, which is the same as cable companies. Verizon realizes that if you can get MDU's you can make more profit than on a single home.
Verizon knows that the home telephone market is dust. We will no longer see wired phones anymore;

Re: Used to live in CanarsieDont get smack. I can bet you cant even afford a house in Canarsie. And its not everywhere in Canarsie that is poor. And Canarsie is one of the better neighborhood of Brooklyn

You're wrong on two accounts. I'll outline them below. However, I agree that Verizon's "redlining" is a non-issue. Cablevision has all of eastern brooklyn, going north of Bushwick and continues west all the way past Bensonhurst. Only the very north western regions of Brooklyn are Time Warner. There are PLENTY of areas of Brooklyn that are Cablevision territory that Verizon could light if they were only looking to take on Cablevision, and target afluent private homes. How about Sheepshead Bay, Gravesend, Midwood, Marine Park, Dyker Heights, Boro Park? If MDU's are profitable in high-purchase-saturation areas, why haven't they targeted the wealthy Brighton Beach sections? If any of the "old time Brooklynites" who've left their old neighborhoods 20 years + ago haven't seen it, the area of Brighton Beach near the old "Oceana" theater is filled with multimillion dollar beachfront condos.
1. Cablevision is one of the most profitable cable companies in the U.S. So profitable in fact, that the Dolans are attempting to take it private again.
2. Canarsie, a working middle class community of mostly home owners is FAR from one of the poorest neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Its socioeconomic status is listed as 1st generation home owner - typical residents are first or second generation Americans (now mostly West Indian, previous decades saw mostly Jews, Irish and Italian of similar socio-economics. I grew up there, I now live in Bergen Beach - both areas are now lit by FiOS, and both areas have mostly private homes (WHICH VARY from small homes (valued at a mere $200 - $250K these days to multimillion dollar MANSIONS in Bergen Beach and Mill Basin. The home I grew up in - in Canarsie now sells for about $375K (single family). The same type of home was also built by the same developer, in Mill Basin and today that small house in Mill Basin sells for about $1M. There are some MDU's in Canarsie, VERY few in Mill Basin or Bergen Beach (I can only think of 1 (6902 Ave. U).
