Charter once again comes in last place...

The February issue of Consumer Reports ranks the top ten triple play operators, and the results shouldn't surprise regular site visitors. The study gives Verizon FiOS top honors as the best triple-play provider with a score of 250. Charter shows up in last place with a score of 188. Satellite providers fare will in the TV rankings, but show up as poor performers in the broadband rankings.

Cable operators continue to struggle, and so far their industry promise to improve customer service isn't showing up in satisfaction studies. Despite a ramping up of support personnel, Comcast also fared poorly with a second to last place showing. For its part, Charter issued the following statement urging annoyed customers to be patient:
We also know that it takes time for improvements to resonate with customers and we're committed to continuously refining and making improvements to the end to end customer experience. Our goal is to provide value to our customers through quality products and service, and to earn the respect and confidence of our customers. The survey was conducted in Spring of 2007 when many of our initiatives to improve the customer experience were just gaining traction.
Charter has consistently performed poorly in ratings here, in the ACSI and elsewhere. Last year Charter got a PR black eye when a tech publicly stated the company's tech tracking systems stunk and that CSRs were simply making up technician ETAs when asked by customers. Earlier this year CEO Neil Smit went out on service runs and sat in a call center to try and get a grip on his company's service problems.

Re: Charter once again comes in last place...

Something to remember is this is an average of Charter's service. Some places are much better, and some (maybe most) are much worse, resulting in an average of what we've got here.

Charter in my area seems competent if you deal directly with the actual local office, which was something I didn't think you could do without calling the Idiot's Help Line. Calling for support is like playing darts blind: you're likely to get just about any random result you could possibly imagine, none of them what you were hoping for.

Ah...FIOS ok, but how about billing?

Verizon should be dead last or tied with someone like XO if they performed a report on satisfaction with billing, pricing information, pricing disparity and regional issues.

I'm not knocking the Fios product. Just their billing and the monolith behind the system.

15/15 symmetric...and happy.

To me, FiOS gets a C-. So, I'm "knocking the FiOS product."

Internet and POTS: Great stuff. Still waiting for the higher-tier packages.
Billing: So-so. They seem to be working on this, my bill is much easier to read now.
TV: Bad. Inability to fix tiling for 3+ months now. IMG is 8 months late and still buggy in the markets it's been released in, HBO VOD is still exhibiting "white tiling," guide data is wildly inaccurate...the list goes on and on.
Customer support: Terrible. 1h+ hold times, lack of follow-up when a problem is reported. I've had to bug some of the local Verizon technicians about my problem with the TV service because the FSC has no f'ing clue what they're doing and won't give me a straight answer.

Comcast...

Oh don't worry though... Comcast's Fiber optic network is vastly superior to FiOS... *rolls eyes* gota love those new commercials where they are making fun of verizon for having fiber when "comcast has been there for years"... twisting stuff to fool the average consumer to thinking its totaly fiber optic... unlike fios which comes to your door as fiber optic..

Does anyone actually trust Consumer Reports anymore?

They used to be great, but lately I've found they know absolutely nothing about any of the things I DO know about, which makes me think they know nothing at all. And when I say they know nothing, I mean they are either flat out wrong in their testing/conclusions, or they are testing things that don't matter, and rating products based on those tests.

Hmmm. Care to provide examples?

I quit trusting them waaaay back in the 80's when I started noticing that they were including non-existent car models in the American manufacturers offerings. When I first noticed them I just assumed typos but after contacting them to notify them that there is no such car as a four door Ford Mustang for example and that other models had been years out of production, the models continued to show up and were always amongst the poorest performers.

They're continued love affair with cars like Volkswagens which consistently showed up at the bottom of everyone elses customer satisfation and warranty repair surveys convinced me they had another agenda.

"Comcast also fared poorly"

Comcast has been promising improved customer service for at least 4 years - remember the "Think Customer First"* initiative?

Perhaps Comcast should consider the implementation phase of this promise. The issuing press releases phase seems to be at the end of its useful life.

Re: "Comcast also fared poorly"

I think Comcast is wasting its time trying to improve its customer service. Their problem now is that when they were the only game in town they treated so many people so badly and generated so much ill will that they can't undue it at this point. I hear my own sentiments constantly echoed by others who say that now that I have FIOS and other options available there is NOTHING absolutely nothing Comcast could do to ever get me back as a customer.

To the Comcast customer service wench who once said "so what are you going to do about it?" when I called to complain about rate increases and favorite channels being shifted to higher priced tiers and constant outages on my "high speed" Internet...

What I did honey is wait patiently for an alternative to become available and when it did I immediately kicked your sorry company to the curb and now I make a point of going out of my way to extol the virtues of those alternatives to everyone I can, actively recruit customers for your competition just for the pleasure of harming your company and pray to see then go out of business someday.

I agree

Only problem with Verizon as a whole is with billing, otherwise, FiOS and everything else they provide (wireless) is amazing. I love it, and this survey echoes my opinion!

Charter rates

No problem with quality of service here in my area just high prices for the services and lack of other choices.

FiOS Billing

Just to buck the trend a little bit on Verizon's billing process, I have had FiOS TV, internet, and phone for over two years, and my bill has been correct every month except for one brief period. My only issue with billing was about a year ago, I did not initially get a small discount I was supposed to receive, it took three 10 minute calls (including wait time) to get it fixed.

When you make a change to your service it takes several months to catch up, which is what I think confuses some people. The "triple-play" bill I get now is a model of clarity, very simple to understand, and as I said before, correct (and I check it every month).

Re: FiOS Billing

I tried FIOS in my area and I went back to Cablevision. The actual service was OK, but the customer service sucked. Any time I had to call them, it was atleast a 2 hour phone call with an average of 8 transfers. I actually had one person tell me, "You have Internet, Phone, and TV? I can only help you if you only have Internet and Phone, another department handles your account." Cablevision has not been perfect, but when there is a problem it is usually a 20 minute call (Or a 5 minute drive to the local office) to resolve.

FIOS deals

They are all big crazy companies...and for us real people (raising a family, juggling bills, etc...), I got to tell you -- it can be a full time job ferreting out which service to go with - and I know that most web sites, etc... do not do a good a job in making the complex (relatively) straightforward - so even if imperfect, I will consider what they consider top rated.
In addition, I also consider other (mainly financial) factors that aren't always captured in the Consumer Reports criteria.

I am in a fortunate situation outside of Boston where Comcast, RCN, and Verizon are all in hand to hand combat.

The result? Good deals that are never published but must be pressed to be obtained. I just got off the phone with a person at Verizon who just won me over (internet, HDTV, and phone) in a deal I did not think possible.
My current carrier, RCN, did get me a good deal through their "customer care" department, but when I called Verizon, they took things to a whole new level...as they say, shop around.
