FiOS Users Getting More Than They Pay For
Users on 25 Mbps and 35 Mbps tiers seeing 5-8 Mbps speed cushion
by Karl Bode Monday 02-Aug-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · Verizon FiOS
In contrast to those users who claim they aren't being given the speeds they were advertised, FiOS customers in our forums indicate they're actually getting more than they paid for. Several users have dropped us a line to note that those on 25/15 Mbps and symmetrical 35 Mbps tiers are seeing significantly extra downstream speed. Users in our forums on the 25 Mbps tier are seeing downstream speeds of 30 Mbps or greater, while customers on the 35 Mbps tier are sometimes seeing speeds up to 43 Mbps. It's not clear if this is Verizon simply giving a little extra love to users, or they're engaged in some kind of testing for future tier changes. We've dropped a line to Verizon to inquire.

Update: Verizon tells us this is simply Verizon delivering faster service than advertised and "nothing out of the ordinary."

20/5 Grandfathered accounts not seeing the love?

As a 5 year FiOS Internet customer on the old 20/5 account I am not receiving this reported "love" in upstate NY, while a co-worker of mine who had signed up for the 25-down package is seeing it.

Perhaps it is time to look into moving to a more current package.

I am on the 20/5 account too with no additional love. I don't want to make a big deal of this because if Verizon may decided to lock things down. But on the other hand I wonder if Verizon is getting their network ready for something big and they doing this as a test.

On a 20/5 myself, saw the increase last week:

Those not getting "the love" may be out of the loop because they are data-only or phone-and-data-only customers. It's been suggested that you have to also subscribe to a FiOS TV plan to get the extra bump in download speed.

I'm on a 25/15 plan as part of a Quad Play and am seeing 5-6 additional megs down.

That very well could be it as I am only a data customer for the immediate future.

Time Warner areas saw the same type of thing

In Huntington Beach, when TWC would roll out a speed bump it would be unannounced. And then later other markets would start seeing it and then the advertising would change. Perhaps that is what is going on with VZ.

I am seeing it

I am on the old 15/5 plan but am actually provisioned for 25/25. I was getting 25/25 consistently for over a year but over the weekend I checked again and tested over 40 down, never had I ever tested at this bandwidth. The timing of this post is spot on as I thought the exact same thing, Verizon is fiddling with their network.

I'm on 25M plan also, but I've been seeing 25M down and 25M up lately as opposed to the 15M up for the plan.

I occasionally see a speedtest with down a little higher than 25M, but big surprise is it seems to be 25M/25M now.

Re: Hooray?!

you will like FIOS much better, I predict.

I switched from Comcast to FIOS about 6 months ago and it's been rock solid. On comcast our vonage box would lose sync and have to be power cycled at least once a week -this has happened 0 (zero) times with FIOS.

connection is also much less noisy - ping plotter shows flat lines on tracerts (+/- 1ms at most) with fios; with comcast it was like looking at a mountain range.

     Here's a few ideas.

- E-mail server for yourself and family, though this is low-bandwidth.
- FTP server for yourself and family.
- Web Server

Or if you really want to get fancy and can spare the cash, you can install video cameras around your house.  Then set up a secure web site at home (only you can log in) where you can view what the cameras see live.

Helps skew the tech support numbers...

I know a cable provider that does this in The Netherlands.

They will advertise a certain tier for "5 Mbps down, 768 Kbps up", and then configure the modems for 6 down, 1 up.

False advertising the other way around? Maybe, but it helps on the number of callers complaining that they aren't reaching their speeds.... because as long as they reach 80% of the configured modem speed, they actually get very close if not over the advertised speed.

Smart thinking. It doesn't cost cable providers a hell of a lot more to have a "cushion" in place of say.... 10% more then the advertised speed, and it helps a LOT in keeping down the "the connection doesn't give me the advertised speed" complaints.

They do that to compensate for the overhead so that your actual speeds are closer to advertised. Cable has been doing that for years,... however, DSL providers, SUCH AS VERIZON, do not... again, "..Verizon delivering faster service than advertised and "nothing out of the ordinary." which is why I laugh so hard in their face. It may be for their FiOS product, but not for Verizon as a company.

25/15 is actually 25 symmetrical.

Ever since the 25/15 plan became available several months ago, it has been consistently showing 25/25 in speed tests.

And now my 25/15 connection is pulling 30/25. They are adding more fluff. Objective: get rid of the legacy 10/2 and 20/5 subscribers by giving them a little more reason to sign up for a new plan.

While the Ookla test is not too accurate with FiOS uploads, I have tested my speeds using real files over prolonged durations. It's a legit increase.
