Home fiber lines grow 83 percent since 10-04
(old news - 02:26PM Tuesday May 10 2005)
tags: Fiber · stats
Fiber to the home connections have grown 83 percent since October 2004, reaching 398 communities in 43 states, claims a new report, which offers a complete list (pdf) of communities served with residential fiber. The report is backed by several pro-fiber consortiums who held a press "event" today in Washington to cheerlead the technology's advancement. Politicians from both parties present at the event didn't offer solutions for increasing adoption and deployment, but did offer generic commentary on how fiber is good, and we need more of it.

It's easy to grow fast when starting from nothing

The bright side is perhaps when those in these favored areas all have fiber maybe the rest of us can get on the list for 384 DSL.

I'm a FIOS customer and its some great broadband...
This is the next best thing in technology since cheap CD/DVD writers/media, mp3 players, dialup modems, etc, etc, etc. Next innovation must be hybrid cars/trucks. Noone likes wasting gas when a battery could provide lots of the power generated by hi-capacity dynos when the car runs on gas(1-30, vs 30+). Just like FIOS is the cablemodem equalizer, hybrid cars will bring back USA's innovation, if only car/truck mauf's have the guts to invest like Verizon has...

How do you figure? From what I know, only Japanese manufacturers have been producing hybrids. I can't think of a single "American" (which is a joke anyway, considering the parts are all made overseas and simply assembled here) manufacturer that has a hybrid model. Somebody post a link to one if one exists.

Ford. They have an Escape Hybrid that you can buy now.

@verizon.n

Yes! Verizon will probably be at the top of the list with FTTH deployments, next will be municipal deployments, co-ops, next cable companies (LAST PLACE)

Probably verizon is probably laying a few hundred line-miles of fiber cable per day network-wide. By next year, fiber cable should be cheap enough for the other rbocs to try limited deployments or full-scale deployments...

If robust battery backup solutions support the fiber, it can finally retire copper based solutions. Lithium Ion can support ultra-long backup times now

So why is it good

For those of who see the term FIOS all over the place... what are some of the advantages of Fiber to the Home over existing technologies?

Re: So why is it good

In no particular order:
-Potential for obcene speeds if the telcos wanted to in the future.
-Expansion into the "CATV" market - competition is always good
-Faster immediate speeds then are available to most via DSL
-No more "your loop length is too long" excuses
-Cheaper for the telco to operate in the long run(excluding initial roll-out costs)
-Allows telcos to eventually phase out expensive, aging analog POTS equipment.
-In some cases will replace decades old infrastructure that badly needed replaced anyways
-Potential phone line quality improvement

The advantages do come at a cost though. The disadvantages are:
-Cuts the competition out of the picture as the ILEC doesn't have to share the line with CLECs (telco advantage)
-Power requirement for the ONT - BBU/UPS don't last forever when running off of the battery.

Here is a detailed picture of that battery. Does the red LED mean that the battery is bad? Or something is screwed up?

According to the user manual, it means the battery is not connected or it has a fault. Check and make sure it's plugged incorrectly.

Most likely a ground fault warning (or the battery is dead). You can test the battery by yanking the power cord out and seeing if your system goes down. I am not an electrician but I would take a ground fault warning seriously and get it fixed.

The biggest advantage, as combined from above, is that a company becomes your "SP", not just an ISP. Compeition won't be down to the component level as it is now.

Bundled deals and IP centric network services (video, telephony, Internet) are only possible with the proper conduit. By Verizon deploying fiber, they are putting themselves in a position to realistically do this...Not attempting half baked BellSouth and SBC deployments of fiber to the node, then twisted pair to the home.

Cable is already there by having at least coax to the home. It allows for much greater bandwidth than twisted pair wiring. And cable is already offering these services.

Thanks cdru and DaSneaky1D for sharing this information. I learned from it. Seems like fiber deployment will usher in a lot of cool services. However, I am concerned about a market where there is little or no competition. The introduction of fiber to the home and the market advantage that comes with it looks like a cable monopoly redux. Nice to have it but at what cost?

Re: So why is it good

That's exactly what it is. Everything is becoming a "duopoly", you get all your services from the Telco or from the Cableco.

i live so close to La Vergne, Tn i could spit and reach to town limits but have not heard a single peep about fiber in the area, La vergne is not a big area either, maybe about 10k people absolute tops, and the only DSL available is a paltry 1.5/512 if you are lucky for $50 a month which is a joke compared to CHSI 6.6/768 for around the same price

Columbus KS

Is on the list. But sadly, the local phone company owns the set up. Sadly, the website they have does not have ANY pricing information. And the FTTP is not working, but coming soon. And it has been for a few years.

And I know what high speed they do offer is extremely overpriced. Like 1.5/256 G.Light DSL for around $850 a month to a place I worked at in Columbus for a few years. And the service was terrible. It was a miracle if it worked for more than a day without losing sync etc...

None in NJ; why am I not surprised

Verizon seems to treat NJ as the ugly stepchild when rolling out services. Why am I not surprised that the list of communities with Fiber doesn't include 1 location in the state?

Incumbent local exchange carrier (ILEC)
An ILEC is the same as a LEC or RBOC.

Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC)
An RBOC is one of seven companies formed from AT&T's 22 local telephone companies during the breakup of the Bell System. The terms RBOC, LEC, and ILEC are equivalent.

Same thing.
RBOC = ILEC
in most all cases, anyway. I dunno of a place where the incumbent phone company isn't the regional bell, but I suppose that could exist somewhere still...

I couldn't beleive this when I saw it. Lavaca, Arkansas has fiber. And the only place in the state according to the list. They don't even have 2000 people in that town. I guess this is a "test" site for SBC.

I doubt SBC is rolling it out. Phone service in town is provided by Pinnacle Communications ( »www.pinncom.com ) , which is a locally owned and operated phone company. I had heard rumors about fiber being rolled out, but haven't seen trucks or digging lately unless they are hanging it on poles. A lady I know had talked to a tech about DSL and he confirmed what you said. Recently, Sallisaw, OK started offering fiber service ( »Sallisaw, OK Goes Fiber ) and they are about 30 miles from here. Little towns are beating the big dogs to the punch around here! Fort Smith, AR is 11 miles away with a population of over 70,000 and no sniff of fiber anywhere (SBC is main telco).

Update....actual construction has started this week. Will take about 18 months to complete. Apparently this is a copper replacement project. Will mainly affect voice and Internet initially, but video and other services are being looked at in the future.

Here is Oskaloosa Iowa's service

They offer 1mbps up and down for 25.00. They offer faster speeds also, but you have to call them.

I would imagine since Mediacom and Qwest have raised their speeds, MCG will roll out larger packages.
