Fiber-optic war moves into Portland suburbs (old news - 10:02PM Thursday Feb 24 2005)
by Mike RogowayVerizon Communications Inc. has begun laying fiber-optic cables directly to its customers' homes in Washington County, creating a conduit for super-fast Internet connections and a possible competitor to Comcast Corp.'s cable television service. Verizon said Wednesday that it plans to begin operating the new network late this year, making Portland's western suburbs the latest front in an escalating war between phone companies and cable TV operators that is playing out nationwide. | So close, yet so far ... Well, I line in Washington county, but I'm sure Verizon will never bring FIOS to this part of Washington county. As the article says, they're doing this to fight Comcast. And there's no Comcast here, so there will be no FIOS. Heck, they won't even do DSL here; just $100/month for capped ISDN.

Of course they will bring it to you!
If you are on the Verizon network you'll have fiber GUARANTEED within 10 to 15 years. Of course if you're in a suburban area then you should expect it within 5 years tops.
People don't realize how HARD it is to rewire an ENTIRE continent! Every copper wire has to be replaced with fiber, this is NOT an easy job.

They've never guaranteed anything, except in Pennsylvania, where they have to provide broadband (but not fiber) in 10 years, by law.
I don't think they'll provide any fiber in areas in their territory that do not have cable.

I don't think they'll provide any fiber in areas in their territory that do not have cable. They did too say that everyone will have fiber in 10 to 15 years. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and running around saying you'll never get fiber! I've been following this for a year, year and a half and I KNOW they said that.
If you have copper and are serviced by Verizon today you'll have FIBER eventually. If you are in a suburban area CHANCES are you'll get it within 5 years (this was never mentioned by Verizon, but it's COMMON SENSE).
Verizon is SAVING money by using copper, and it is EASIER to maintain and they can MAKE MORE money by providing MORE SERVICES! Of course they want fiber to everyone. They just can't provide it to everyone in its first year of operation.
FIOS is NOT just data! Everyone makes this connection because it is the "key" part of FIOS to most of us on this forum. But the truth is that Verizon is deploying FIOS to offer CRYSTAL clear phone service, high definition TV and tons of digital / on demand tv channel (compete with satellite or cable co.) and FiOS to compete with broadband companies.

I don't think you can.

Absolutely. And in areas where they have no broadband competition, they won't be deploying FIOS.

As for your second comment.... Well, if you read my post you'd see what I meant. They are installing FIOS NOT just for broadband but also telephone and TV. Not to mention it's CHEAPER to run fiber then copper! They're saving money in the long run..
Why can't you grasp this?
