Final Chapter in Rigas SagaFCC Approves Adelphia Deal ( old news - 06:11PM Thursday Jul 13 2006) tags: fcc · business · chapter11 Comcast and Time Warner's $17.6 billion purchase of bankrupt Adelphia Communications, has finally been approved. FCC commissioners voted 4 -1 in favor of the sale, with Michael Copps opposing, and Jonathan Adelstein dissenting in part, saying the commission should have imposed network neutrality conditions. The one major proviso: Comcast and Time Warner must put disputes over pricing or access to its regional sports networks to arbitration. Copps, wanting greater consumer protections, suggested that "while rescuing Adelphia is laudable, the anti-competitive combination of assets is not.",adding that nothing in the order "rebuts the truth that competition means higher prices. This decision is about big media getting bigger with consumers holding the bag. Time Warner, in a press release, stated that "now, with virtually all regulatory approvals in hand, we are in good shape to close the transaction by the previously announced target date of July 31." It's still my understanding that the Kansas City trade, if it happens, is only taking part on a separate deal in TX with a system there.

| Re: Better or worst What's so funny about that?
If you look at the entire deal of the transaction, there is a reason why TWC is getting more. Not to mention, there is that alleged 33% subscriber caps in this country.
Comcast is gaining major strength out of this for it's own internal operation by being able to cluster it's markets together. For example, where the Twin Cities has Time Warner and Comcast, They will swap this system with TWC so they can have the entire metro area. It helps reduce some of the operational costs.

1 edit | Re: Typo I rarely have issues either. But anytime I call or email RR to inquire about things, I get either incorrect information, or they just gloss over my questions.
In a recent email exchange with support, I asked 5 questions, clearly separated from each other to prevent confusion. The reply consisted of an answer to one question, and a restatement of something else I had written. I replied back, pressing for the answers to my other questions, to which support replied answering 2 more questions, completely ignoring the rest.
Stuff like this doesn't just happen occasionally, but every time I contact support, bar none. -- Out the 10BaseT, through the router, down the co-ax, over the fiber, across the backhaul, past the edge router, off the network...nothing but net

| From what I understand, it doesn't quite work that way. Once the infrastructure is in place and service is good, then service will not change, only the cable company name. I have great service with Adelphia's HSI, always on, very stable and fast. I expect that once Time Warner takes over that this will continue. I'm not worried. | |

| Re: Typo said by Mactron :Sad for those fellow broadbanders going to Comcrap. Terrible TV service, intermittent HSI, and ever increasing monthly $$$. Been there, done that! Ashamed you had bad service. I had and have great service and no problems. In any case, the switch is mostly irrelevant. The local mgt, service personnel, and infrastructure all come over intact to Conrail. If Adelphia is good for you now, it will be no different under Comcast. The only changes will be an eventual change in some TV networks being carried and an equalization of prices over time. Cable companies like Comcast and TW are multi system operators(MSOs) and each local system is run almost as an independent company. That is why some areas in a cable company are great(like mine) and others are not so hot. It takes many many years for an area to change from its heritage. -- -- Join Red Room Forum BLOG tkjunkmail.blogspot.com My Web Page | |

| Timeline for takeover? Any word on when Comcast will assume the Adelphia territories west of DC?
This is a bummer...Adelphia HSI has been very reliable here in Culpeper county since rollout a year and a half ago. Two outages in all that time, both resolved in a few hours (cable cuts).

| Rats--- This sucks. I am very impressed with Adelphia service in my area. Great uploads (almost 2x times TW uploads on their fastest level) I rarely have any issues and if I do, it is a minor one that is fixed very fast. I wished Adelphia came out of this on its own. | |

Ridiculous statement....Of course you are clearly forgetting the Adelphia Backbone and other infrastructure. Hob I dunno though, the OP has a point. That's a lot of money to pay per sub. Can you imagine if they just went around to their own areas they are in already and approached homes passed who DON'T take their service and offered them all 1,000 bucks to come on board? That would STILL only be less than 1/3rd the price they're paying per sub for this deal.
It kind of makes you wonder why these companies only offer something like 19.99 for six months, hence a 120.00 price tag for an incentive for new subscribers when they're willing to buy out customers for this kind of money?
I realize there are other assets involved, but still. That seems to value those bankrupt assets at a very rich price.
At 100.00 a month billing, this will take 3 years per sub just to recoup those revenues.
I'm not sure I understand their thinking in offering money like this. -- The life you help save just might be your own Team Discovery

Basically either a big cable company was going to purchase Adelphia, or they'd have to let the company go under and the assets be sold off piecemeal. The latter wouldn't have been good for anyone (it certainly wouldn't have improved competition!)
