Fine Tuning the Wireless Spectrum Careless use increases the potential for interference Wi-Fi and cellular networks are among the highest profile and most popular wireless technologies available to consumers. With newer technologies such as WiMax on the way the potential increases for interference because of careless use of the spectrum. "People are seeing a lot of more interesting things to do with spectrum - We need to be more efficient about what we have, because we can't make more," Intel Senior Fellow Kevin Kahn said in a CNET report. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has been re-evaluating the use of the currently occupied wireless spectrum. Its recent efforts have involved freeing up over-the-air television broadcast spectrum. The television spectrum is particularly valuable because it's in the lower radio bands, which means signals with significant amounts of bandwidth per channel can be sent over a long range. Kahn added, "the industry is better off making spectrum more flexible" and "that he sees a day when technologies are developed to enable smoother transitions across networks".

I'd bet half of the unlicensed Part 15 devices operating will be doing so with illegal amplifiers and antennas just to make it across the house. | |

IP phones, IP internet connections, IP radios, etc. We'll just let the ITU come up with some cool scheme to make sure over the air collisions a thing of the past and make data transfers of 100Mbit possible. (insert sarcasm here)

| I agree. This is getting out of hand. I have a small 2.4GHZ dish pointing down town to my access point (I am on a hill) and I can pick up (and use) about 50 wireless networks. These are all small residential 802.11 networks connected to different broadband providers. There are probably more if I decided to move the dish around since it has a small radiation pattern.
2.4 ghz phones are everywhere and completely not neccessary. A 2.4ghz phone is no better than a 900 mhz cordless phone. I think people think it is better if it is a higher frequency (Now available, 5.8GHZ phones that can go 30 ft).
We then have people competing with people. Bobby sue puts up a wireless network to use the laptop in the pool. George next door uses a local ISP 2.4 ghz connection. Since Bobby Sue put in the omni on her roof George now needs a 5 watt amp to overcome the interference. Then so does Bobby Sue. It goes on and on like that. | |

Horizontal polarization. Problem solved - no need to escalate the "Wi-Fi" cold war. But then, that would require using a little ingenuity. Nobody wants to be bothered to try that...
