Will pay a third of $300 million project...
(old news - 09:07AM Friday Sep 19 2008)
tags: coverage · world
The Finnish government said Thursday that the they're going to pay a third of the cost to wire the entire country with broadband by 2015. Already sixth in the nation according to the latest OECD data, the nation's small geographical footprint gives them an edge in bringing next-gen speeds to many residents. As there are everywhere however, there remains areas where private industry doesn't see the ROI for deployment, requiring some kind of helping hand to ensure complete coverage. Finland's Harri Pursiainen gives financial build estimates to the AFP:
"I have estimated that building fibreoptic cable networks in areas where they would not be built commercially will cost around 200 million euros, of which the government could pay a maximum of one third, so around 67 million euros (97 million dollars)," Harri Pursiainen, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, told AFP.
For a sense of scale, the country only has 5.3 million residents to our 300 million. The estimated $287 million the project will cost is dwarfed by both AT&T's ($7 billion) and Verizon's ($24 billion) next-gen upgrade plans.

A lot of money for people who may not need it or can use it

Is this an example of what the Finnish plan is supposed to bring fiber broadband to?

"We are strongly committed to developing an information society and we want to promote productivity and efficiency," Linden said. She cited as an example some regions in northern Finland where there are vast distances between towns and where video link-ups and other services requiring Internet connections faster than one megabyte per second were a necessary part of daily life.

Do you live in Finland? No. So who cares. And that pic is obviously old.

Finland's population (5.5m) is made up of Finn 93.4%, Swede 5.6%, Russian 0.5%, Estonian 0.3%, Roma (Gypsy) 0.1%, Sami 0.1% (2006). 10% of Samis practice reindeer herding. Many Sami now live outside Sápmi, in large cities such as Oslo.

Using an early 1900's photo is disingenuous.

Since you hate our country so much, go ahead and move to Finland. No one will miss you here. I'm sure you can become a citizen without even trading!

YES... please keep that ignorant attitude...

I need less competition in getting in to a country like Finland. While you guys are all waving your American flags around in your tent cities as your country becomes third world, I'll be sitting in a cozy Scandinavian apartment.

Finland is not a Scandinavian Country, it is a Baltic Nation related to Estonia and Hungary. It IS however, located on the Scandinavian peninsula.

Indeed. Socialism for the rich - that's how it's done in America.

At least in Europe, socialism benefits the common man.

Re: Atleast there government gots an internet plan....

Yea I agree, why should we be made to pay for the services we demand? Let some other scmuck foot the bill. Those evil ISP's are actually trying to make a profit and provide jobs, why this should be against the law!!!!!

Re: Atleast there government gots an internet plan....

Yes, it should be illegal or subsidized by the government. These services are necessary to may people. You may say it is not but, lets face it, it is. Just like the telephone was. It is important for the infrastructure of this country to have a society that is well linked and well connected. That is the whole point of this so-called "world economy." Besides, they'd eventually remake the money they spent on deploying this technology through their outrageous monthly fees. It may not be soon but it will eventually happen. No investment has a ROI that is overnight.

@covad.net

These are very hi-tech people

The picture is supposed to be funny, but might mislead readers. Remember that the Finnish economy is largely driven by technology, especially the design and manufacture of Nokia cellphones.

Also remember that the US is currently 15th worldwide in broadband penetration (not only behind the Scandinavian and Western European powerhouses, but also behind such minor-leaguers as Greece, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Our rate of growth is slowing, according to a 2007 study by the OECD. A little nudge from the government can help with this.

Socialism? Only by the loosest definition. If you consider broadband an important tool for economic growth, then government support is as logical as a government support for a highway system.

THINK TWICE

I think every American who criticizes Finland should stop and take pause.

I watched my parents beg and plead to get a $10,000 SBA loan from the government after Katrina, only to see 500 billion dollars be given to wall street hacks who should be charged for treason.

All the while people in Texas still have a hard time getting ice from FEMA.

Children in New Orleans still can't read, our murder rate is out of control.

Re: THINK TWICE

The alternative is worst than the initial situation.

I love how some punks lightly threaten to move to Japan or Sweden just for the broadband(like broadband is really important in life) yet no one puts their money where their mouth is.

Plus with the raising AntiAmerican attitude in the EU socialist countries the candidates wound probably not get a residency visa.

Most likely Finland would be the one of first country "liberated" when Mother Russia makes her move.
Yes and means squat that is part of EU, the union is just a thievery community and has no teeth or common armed forces.

In this case the grass is definitely not greener.....

wow

whoever is complaining about taking money from the rich and giving to the poor needs to to have their eye sight and empty skull checked.

our tax dollars are going to pay for an unjust war that's not benefiting in any way, "the surge worked".. yea, you killed everyone fighting for your land like i would fight for california if someone just came in and started shooting.. and i wasn't even born in the U.S.

get a clue, most of the money in the US is coming out of california and we're not getting SHIT back, they consider dropping a day from the school week because they can't afford to pay for electricity. they limit the amount of taxes you can pay if you're rich but suck the crap out of the lower and middle class.

you'll probably vote for mcbush / stalin.. who are probably a stones throw away from "seeing" russia and going to war with russia.. and you obviously dont have children so you wont be missing out when the war with russia fails and everyone is dead.. throughout the world.

so when i pay taxes and it goes to bail out these companies.. and wall street, WHILE i'm down 60k in the market and 100k in real estate and the rich get away and get bailed out ALL the time with bonus's even after their entire work force and investors go BROKE, all you will say is "you should've watched your investments."

so why dont you just go crawl up in a ball and whither away because you obviously are a very stupid person.

if you lose your job at the place you work and have trouble buying health care, dont start to cry or bitch about how bad the government sucks because that's exactly what i told my uncle's wife...

and stop telling people to leave the country if they think america sucks because those people who are complaining are the people who caused the uproar to leave the british bullshit and create this country.

get a clue., people in the u.s. are barely able to eat and shit and the rich keep getting richer because they're always connected with the fraudsters.

also, before you assume i'm someone lower class.. i'm definitely not but i care for people, obviously, unlike you.

have fun voting republican, see you in heaven or hell when our dumb shit president gets us all killed.

That's funny...

Your fucking country has money to bail out Wall Street and help pro-West Muslim wackos overtake anti-West Muslim wackos in Afghanistan, and yet you can't connect your citizens to the Internet or given them universal health care and you still have schools that can't afford to pay for textbooks, teachers, and decent facilities. If Wall Street misses one loan payment, I support a firing squad for every executive in the financial sector. (I'm not being facetious either, that's the kind of pressure they should be under to clean up their act if they want your trillion dollars.)

Finland IS Great

A market-based socialism beats market-based capitalism for 95% of the population of any given country, any given day of the week. As a Canadian and a Finn, currently residing in the USA, I say "Go Finland."
