You may say it is not but, lets face it, it is. Just like the telephone was. It is important for the infrastructure of this country to have a society that is well linked and well connected. That is the whole point of this so-called "world economy." Besides, they'd eventually remake the money they spent on deploying this technology through their outrageous monthly fees. It may not be soon but it will eventually happen. No investment has a ROI that is overnight. | |

Also remember that the US is currently 15th worldwide in broadband penetration (not only behind the Scandinavian and Western European powerhouses, but also behind such minor-leaguers as Greece, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Our rate of growth is slowing, according to a 2007 study by the OECD. A little nudge from the government can help with this.
Socialism? Only by the loosest definition. If you consider broadband an important tool for economic growth, then government support is as logical as a government support for a highway system. | |
